Ohio State: A Team America Loves to Hate

The Daily List at SI.com recently had a post up called "Five Sports Franchises We Love to Hate."

And the nominees were...

1. Any Major Team from Boston -- Must say, with Tom Brady on the Pats, I don't feel this way. But with the Celts, Pats and Red Sox all doing so well, I can understand why other sports fans would.

2. The New York Yankees -- Steinbrenner and his Pinstriped Posse are a given on any list like this.

3. Los Angeles Lakers -- Couldn't agree more, especially with all their Hollywood pseudo-fans who always seem to be in the stands not to cheer but to be seen at the scene.

5. Chelsea -- Soccer. I don't have strong feelings about any sport where 2-0 is considered an offensive explosion.

But the reason his post is up on the MZone of course is because of the team they listed at #4:

THE Ohio State University -- The SI.com story included the following explanation as to why the Bucks made the list: "Buckeye fans have had the legs for their argument for dominance knocked out from under them lately, what with the way they keep losing in championship games. But you'd never know State can't win the big one by listening to them Buckeyes. (By the way, we get it: You're THE Ohio State University. Nice sweater vests."

Uh...what they said.

I loathe Chelsea as much(yes, I said it) as I do The University of Ohio State.
Yost, you should really check out the Premier league, it's pretty amazing. You'll have to wait until next year, though. The last match is this weekend.

I'm sorry, it's a cute list, but how can they not include Duke and Notre Dame?

surrounded in columbus said...

that's simple- Duke & ND have both sucked so bad recently, nobody bothers to listen to them. 9/10 headlines about the two over the last few years have been of the "end of the era" genre.

tosu wins just enough to still make the news.

beast in 'bama said...

And just where is ESPN? They should make the list if only for the New York-Boston thing.

And to echo KML: to know Chel$ea is to loathe Chel$ea - especially after last week.

intellidouche said...

Can't believe the corndogs were not on that list. I guess they are #6.

Here's praying Man U win the Champions League.... although having an all-British final isn't fun here in Switzerland.

A lot of Brits and for them to have the entire final... well... if you lived here, they think they are quite superior.

Vadatripp said...

It does my heart good to know that the rest of America despises the Suckeyes ALMOST as much as we all do. They just don't have to put up with their crap all year round like we do.

As for the Boston teams, I don't even hate them just because they rub their success in others' noses. I hate them because 10 years ago, all of those teams SUCKED DONKEY BALLS and they were crying their eyes out about it.

Mikoyan said...

I hate the Red Sox because when they finally won their World Series, there was all this outpouring of emotion for them. The next year, when the White Sox won the World Series, one could hear the crickets chirping. Never mind that the White Sox had a World Series drought that was longer than the Red Sox. But then again, they aren't the team that matters in Chicago, apparently. But before the Red Sox won the World Series, there were all those specials about "The Curse". the only curse they had was crappy ownership.

As for the Patriots, I was glad to see them get knocked on their ass in the Super Bowl. The already had their parade plans and played the game like the Giants were going to roll over and die because it was their destiny to win the Super Bowl.

I'm suprised the Cokeboys weren't on that list...but I guess being "America's Team" and all, we're supposed to worship a team that can't complete a dome.....so God can look down on his team....GAG!

Feels good to be on top! Just like Surrounded in Columbus said you don't make this list if you suck. I'd be jealous UM fans. It should be a programs goal to make this list.

seriously....is 5 1/3 years really that long ago?

DaBraylon17 said...

i must agree, duke should be on the list.

fuck em. i hate them.

Mikoyan said...

Duke and Notre Dame should have special places on this list. Granted their teams haven't been in the spotlight in a while but still....

DaBraylon17 said...

and it's not envy UOS fans, your team is hated not because of your success, but because of your arrogance.you guys have a bit of success over UM and make 3 title game appearances (two beatdowns of course) and you guys think you have the best team in all the land and scream "disrespect" when someone knocks on your team. get over yourselves. UOS has rolled through a conference that has been down with most teams recently, including Michigan, the Daddy of the conference. your short big ten king reign will end soon enough.

america hates chelsea? 99% of americans don't even know who they are, let alone care enough to have an opinion about it. ask most americans if they hate chelsea and they'd say "no but i can't stand her mom".

sic - love how you tempered your statement about 'osu wins "JUST ENOUGH"' :) i'm sure it killed you to type even that much positivity about us.

Mikoyan said...

I hate Chelsea too....Frickin' Jeff Daniels....

but anyways my hate list again:
1. The Red Sox - As a Yankees fan, it's a must.
2. the Suckeyes - Ohio just sucks and the Suckeyes are a reflection of that.
3. The Cowboys - America's team...My ass. Criminal bastards.
4. Notre Dame - If someone shows Rudy one more time, I'm gonna puke. How in the hell did they get the contract from NBC?
5. Can't really think of a team to put here....Maybe the Avalanche or the Blackhawks or the Blues.

Lane said...

i'll take a spot on that list any day of the year. any day.

i hate ND but i love Rudy - great movie IMO

my hate list...

1. Michigan although the hate is turning to pity
2. Pittsburgh Steelers - Browns fan here so this is required and just
3. Yankees
4. Notre Dame/Charlie Weiss
5. Duke/Dick Vitale - god i hate dick vitale - i probably wouldn't hate duke as much if it weren't for him
6. Reality TV
7. George Bush - although also turning to pity
8. anyone "clever" enough to say or type "o$u" or "suckeyes". having a "morons" avatar is one thing - i don't actually call them that nor do i type it - but actually calling them names like that is something i expect from my 5 year old.
9. the SEC - yeah we can't beat them but who the hell chants their conference name at a sporting event. plus they're usually afraid to play anyone out of conference north of the Manson-Nixon line.
10. top 10 lists

carl tabb said...

Reality check time for UOS fans. If a team makes that list because people are jealous of their greatness or success USC would be well ahead of UOS. UOS is hated because of the general assholery of their mostly classless fans. Not at all surprised you are proud of that assholery, by the way.

Hey! I'm from Chelsea! But the one mikoyan referenced, not the one in England. I think we're hated only by Dexter, and mostly just during football season.

And mikoyan, don't forget that Chelsea has a couple other notable residents: as I recall, Rich Maloney (Michigan baseball coach) lives here, and reportedly, Lloyd Carr bought a retirement home here.

What's really annoying is that I photograph the Chelsea football team, but no one is ever going to find my pictures by searching just for "chelsea football." The OTHER Chelsea hogs all the top search hits.

Mikoyan said...

Don't forget the Knicks. I hate the team, and the fans (Spike Lee included).

Any MJ or Reggie Miller fan back in the NBA on NBC days can sympathize.

Yes, Madison Square Garden has history. But let's not forget, fellow UM fans, that when Michigan is playing on that court, that it's usually NIT related (gag).

I hate the Knicks. Tosu still tops that list, but they're my number two, followed by the Steelers (Bengal's fan here).

surrounded in columbus said...

sru,
no, it didn't hurt at all. tosu has been on a GOOD roll. they've had a GOOD streak since 2002. it's a record (on the field at least) that no one would embarrassed by. i don't like saying you've been good, but i don't deny it.

it's your own extrapalation from "good" to "great" that i find offensive. you're not usc. you're not lsu. you're a clear rung beneath them. they're better, they've won more, and you're not "great" like they've been over the last 7 years (because we all know all tosu history starts in 2001).

and that's why tosu makes SI's list. it's been a GOOD run. you've "owned" the big tem for 4 of the last 5 seasons (and still did well the 5th/2003). but that's all it is. just good. not great. 2nd best. nothing to hide, but for the love of god, nothing worthy of the praise you heap upon yourselves.

you've beaten 3 ranked teams that weren't big ten teams- KSU (04), ND (06), and UT (06). KSU was a fluke who upset OU in the B12 championship game. ND was over rated & didn't belong in a bowl. and UT ended up w/ 4 losses before season was out. and that's your entire resume' outside the conference.

meanwhile you've been clocked by the SEC and upset by Illinois, NU, and Purdue during the same time frame. but to listen to tosu fans, you talk like you won all those games! you talk like you're USC or lsu but your record doesn't back that up. they won their MULTIPLE big games, tosu hasn't. michigan, miami, fsu, tennessee? all won MNC's in the last 11 years. tosu's record belongs in that group, not w/ usc or lsu.

you made the SI list not because michigan fans are envious but because the rest of the world sees you as blowhards and empty talk. you're not far behind Hawaii for empty schedules and then being overmatched bowls but you talk you actually win those games you get blown out of it, and the rest of the world finds it annoying.

OSURulz said...

I still love how we've become the poster child for "can't win the big one". Hilarious. Anything you can say about us you can say double for Oklahoma, but you don't hear people hating on them. I guess those memories of getting beat by USC and LSU in the NC are long gone, instead they're getting popped by teams like WVU and Boise St in the runner-up bowls.

I'm going to have to assume that teams like ND and scUM have become so irrelevant in recent years that they're not going to end up in anyone's top 5 list. Even funnier that Michigan fans pile on us since nobody outside of our two schools considers Michigan to be big game for us anymore. The whole world expects us to walk right over you. If we didn't hate each other (as demonstrated on this board) this would practically cease to be a rivalry.

Anyway my Top 5

1. All things Michigan - 1 split NC in 60 years buys a lot of ego.
2. The Yankees - The whole sport is their farm system.
3. Notre Dame - nuff said.
4. Florida - Welcome to the top 5, please enjoy your stay.
5. The Steelers - Why do you have to be so d@mn good every year?

surrounded in columbus said...

don't think of us as your "big game" anymore? really?

that's a lie. every tosu comment on this board is a concession of their envy of the maize & blue.

and all the following comments saying "not so"??

same thing.

want to prove it's not? go somewhere else. because unceasing comments about how much you don't care about us or what we think become funnier w/ each new repetition.

and whets, before you start, michigan fans making fun of tosu on a michigan blog? it is NOT the same thing as tosu fans showing up here to make fun of michigan.

we laugh at you amongst ourselves because we really don't like you (nothing personal, ole chum). tosu fans showing up here to tell us we're wrong? that's jealously.

Feelin' Blue said...

osurulz,

You never cease to amaze me with your stupidity. The two largest margins of victory the past 8 years were 14 and 16 points, the former being UM's victory in 2003 and the latter being UOS's victory in 2004--you know, the one that was proceeded by the bomb-sniffing dog incident. The games are generally close, so UOS winning 4 in a row doesn't mean that everyone expects UM to lose. In 2006, Corso actually predicted we would win, but unfortunately UOS had shitty turf on their side.

Basically, if UOS was always expected to walk over Michigan
1) The games shouldn't have been as close as they usually are
2) Tressel wouldn't feel the need to cheat

Mike said...

SiC....If you're talking about 7 years, you need to include 2002, 2003, and 2004

Don't forget 2002 Pac 10 Champions Washington State, who finished the year in the top 10(#9/10, I believe), or 2002 Texas Tech, who was 9-5. Not to mention Miami(Fl.) in the bowl game that year.

Or, going to 2003, you've also forgotten #23 Bowling Green :-P, and NC State and Washington.

Looking at 2004, NC State again.

Furthermore, since 2001(your time frame again), USC is 76-14, with 1 National Title and 6 Pac 10 titles. LSU is 74-18, with 2 National Titles and 3 SEC titles. OSU is 73-16, with 1 National Title and 4 conference championships.

How exactly have those two programs blown us out of the water?

OSURulz said...

Yes SiC, USC is on another level. I haven't heard anyone here (or anywhere else for that matter) comparing our program to USC. Even if we were, USC has had their stumbles like Stanford or Oregon St or UCLA over the past few years, so naming off our stumbles doesn't mean much to me in the context of your argument.

And to follow up, I didn't say UM wasn't a big game to us, quite the opposite, its the biggest game of the year. When people ask me if I'd rather OSU win the NC and lose to UM or vice-versa, beating you guys is always first priority. I was talking about how the rest of the world seems to view The Game now. Lot of things have changed since we met in 2006. At the time people deeply respected our schools, our programs, and our conference. Didn't take long for all that to change. Now our conference is slow and weak, OSU can't win the big one, and you guys are not seen as worthy opponents. I don't personally agree with ANY of that, but that is how most other people see it. And both of our programs stumbles are what got us from where we were to where we are no in the public perception.

OSURulz said...

... where we are noW in the public's perception.

Feelin' Blue said...

As a Pats fan, I am pissed that people were planning the parade before the Super Bowl. That is a sign of taking success for granted and not seeing it as earned. Talk about counting your chickens.

To be fair, however, it might be possible that planning a parade before the Super Bowl is standard procedure for logistical reasons; it might be that both NY and Boston were planning their respective parades before the game.

Others who should/could be on the list:
Duke. First, obnoxious fans, the reason that UOS and, unfortunately, Boston is on the list. Plus, although everyone knows that the two biggest rivalries in sports are Michigan-OSU and Yankees-Red Sox*, every February ESPN starts talking about how Duke-UNC is the biggest rivalry in all of sports when it isn't. The discussion is ludicrous, and the only reason it comes up is that ESPN wants to create hype for the game and to piss me off. One question: where is College Game Day when Duke and UNC play in football? Exactly.

*M-OSU is the biggest, but those jaded sports fans who favor Y-RS tend to give M-OSU the #2 spot.

Harvard. Call it sour grapes over losing to Amaker, but not really. I'm sure that you would just hate a bunch of entitled college students who know nothing about sports chanting "safety school" at every event. Then again, Harvard isn't really successful in sports, so it shouldn't make the cut.

Notre Dame. Tough call. As annoying as they are, I hear that the fans are classy at games, although I also hear that many are fair-weather fans. I do know that many are obnoxious, delusional, and annoying. Hatred of ND is one of the few things that unite fans of Michigan, UOS, and sometimes even MSU. Even before I became a CFB fan, I knew that there was something wrong with the way that ND was treated as "America's team." I won't get started. I have a little rant on that.

OSURulz said...

And apprently timing is everything since Mike is comparing us with USC, and very well I might add.

Bigasshammm said...

The fact of MI never being in one of these lists is because MI is one of the most loved universities in the country. MI sells the most merchandise then any other college. They have been voted for years as having the best uniforms and have never needed to change them really. Have always had the biggest stadium until this upcoming year. Even last week my parents were vacationing in Florida and my dad could not believe the number of MI shirts he saw around. Nary a TUO$ shirt was to be found mind you. TUO$ is hated not so much for their record over the last few years but for their attitude. They elevate themselves to a higher level with their use of "the" to proclaim themselves. Their track record with athletes and misbehavior is growing astronomical. The country is tired of seeing any team of theirs (basketball, football) make it to a NC game and then get obliterated. Also the city has one of the worst reputations for violence and rioting over simple mid-season wins over MI or a bowl win. If you have to celebrate a win by violence then there is something wrong with your town.

Feelin' Blue said...

Ah, now I see what you are saying, osurulz. You speak as a Big 10 Man. Respect.

Still, not everyone expects UOS to walk over UM. Even this past year, SN predicted us to win. Unfortunately, they were something like 1-8 in their predictions of UM games this year. They only correctly predicted that we would beat ND.

Next year, which I assume is what you are talking about, everyone expects us to lose to UOS mainly because Michigan will be in flux in its first year under RR, and RR teams mostly haven't done well in his first year. Also, its in Columbus and UOS returns everyone and will be a contender. I think that things will change the next year, and UM will be a major contender a little further down the road.

Feelin' Blue said...

How the fuck did I forget U$C? A lot of it has to do with them doing well, but I do hate them and Pete Carroll.

I would say that ND should be on the list. Just because ND is irrelevant right now does not mean that they shouldn't be on the list.

Woody Hayes said...

Yost, you are a bitter, bitter man who is trying way too hard. Your posts are incessant at this point. I guess seeing your favorite team lose to the Buckeyes year after year is really getting to you.

There are a lot of people still salty about that down here and its not right that you take a cheap shot at us while the wounds are still fresh. Stay classy man, keep it above the belt.

And unless I miss my guess, there is probably a reason you see more people wearing Michigan shirts in FLORIDA right now. I have family down there and its all I can do to drown out the constant taunting. I didn't know my grandma could be such a b1tch.

Vadatripp said...

"Even funnier that Michigan fans pile on us since nobody outside of our two schools considers Michigan to be big game for us anymore. The whole world expects us to walk right over you. "

Wow, there's no way you typed that with a straight face. Wasn't the spread less than 5 points last year? Wasn't the game pre-billed as "The Game of the Year" in 2006? Of course, those remarks just provided insight as to why you're so universally reviled.

"I'm going to have to assume that teams like ND and scUM have become so irrelevant in recent years that they're not going to end up in anyone's top 5 list."

Except yours. :)

What is your excuse for teams like LSU or USC or Florida - who are not only relevant - but one of which won 3 NCs in 2 years (2 of which by figuratively ass-raping you in both football and basketball in the SAME year)? Wouldn't you think with all that success that they would be in the top 5?

Maybe if Urban Meyer wore a sweater vest, had all his players call it "THE University of Florida" and had sex with patio tables then they would've made it.

Vadatripp said...

"I didn't know my grandma could be such a b1tch."

Why can't I get that call out of my head, "The Mountaineers have just beaten the Michigan Wolverines!...The Mountaineers of Appalachian State have just BEATEN THE MICHIGAN WOLVERINES in the BIG HOUSE!"?

Sadly, I did. Last year was probably the best shot you guys had at beating us in years. You brought back a veteran team whose sole mission was to beat us while we were in a psuedo-rebuilding year. You guys didn't get it done and now people are wondering how long it will be until RR rights the ship. In the mean time all the SEC fans who have successful branded our conference "slow and weak" (and the journalists who agree) feel that we keep making it to the dance because you can't put us in check like you used to. If you can't take my word for it, ask Colin Cowherd or Drew Sharp. ;)

"Do Michigan fans do this on OSU boards?"

yes, but not as much in recent years....probably due to having little to brag about other than us losing title games.

Ohio guy,

A better question would be, do UM fans do that as much to MSU and ND blogs? I personally would guess not. There are many UOS fans who demonstrate an unhealthy obsession with Michigan.

There are UOS fans here who mean well. osurulz seems like an ass but he really just wants UM and the rest of the Big 10 to be good. I don't agree with all of his reasoning, but I can tell that he wasn't too happy with UM losing to App St and getting killed by Oregon. Otherwise he would feel better about UOS beating us. Also, srudoff and whets can't get enough of us.

It's simple really. Fans visiting the shoe for a road game better bring their body armor and real thick skin. A much higher than average proportion of their fanbase is obnoxious and abusive...that's why they made the list.

all this chest beating and professions of excellence leaves me with only one comment...

Question - How did the "The" start getting so emphasized?

Was the list "5 most hated" or "5 most dominant"? The teams listed seem to all have winning in common. As winners hate losing, losers hate winners.

"If you can't take my word for it, ask Colin Cowherd or Drew Sharp. ;)"

Pillars of journalistic integrity to be sure.

The more you assclown Suckeye fans post on here, the more we know how obsessed you STILL are with U-M. Hell, I didn't even give tUOS a second thought when we were kicking their asses throughout the 90s. Maybe that's why they added "THE" - to sound more important.

You know, I may have over reacted on this thread, nevertheless, my premise holds true. I understand the rivalry and all, but the thing is, this IS a Michigan blog. You don't go to someone's home and trash talk them, it is poor manners. I don't go to OSU blogs (I don't even care if they have blogs) and trash talk them. There is something to be said for having a little fun, but in all seriousness, if you really hate Michigan so much, I don't see why you would even want to come here. So, if you think Yost is so damn funny and since OSU apparently doesn't have a funny blogger, then you might consider showing a little bit of respect. We are here as avid Michigan Fans. Is Michigan perfect? Of course not and we laugh at ourselves maybe more than anyone else, but that doesn't mean that we want our hated rivals to come here and pour salt in a wound.

I suppose my "chickness" is showing, but damn, I am getting tired of coming here and reading stupid shit.
