Okay, I admit it, before seeing the clip below I couldn't have named Michigan's women's b.ball coach (and no, MSU fans, it's not John Beilein). But now I know. It's Kevin Borseth. And I won't forget it. Neither will you after watching...
Show of hands: who thinks Coach thought the problem was offensive rebounding? Anybody?

ok. i saw the video, and then about 20 minutes later on jim rome's radio show, he had a segment about this. did anyone see it? it was honestly one of the funniest things i have ever heard in my life. i was literally in tears listening to the segment. then he followed the segment up with another and he stringed together a bunch of pressers or other audio clips together, times when the people were just screaming into the microphone. he played mike gundy, john l. smith, howard dean, this bball head coach, the "playoffs?!" football coach, al green, and some other guys. my god was it hilarious.
Just a stupefying meltdown. Never before has offensive rebounding been so important.
The really funny thing is PTI reports there were only 6 people at the press conference.
I'm embarrassed for Michigan because of this clown.
That's the trouble with women's sports: not enough passion.
Rebounding also. Not enough rebounding.
Dudes--I go to the WBB games. Coach is hysterical like this ALL the time. He is passionate and involved and coaching 110%. He will turn to the crowd and lament bad calls, ask for explanations from us why one player missed an easy lay up, heck he'll even go over to the scorer's table and ask them what the hell just happened. I'm surprised that he hasn't gotten tossed yet because he challenges the refs too.
The guy is a quirky firecracker and sometimes in the TO's even the bench players are chuckling a bit at the stuff he says. But I gotta tell you, these kids are fired up with him coaching and are playing to their potential and I watched him figure out how to break a smothering zone defense against Illinois earlier this month....
I'm not embarrassed by the guy at all. These women need to play hard and they need to get fired up.....
They play Minny this Sunday, final home game---c'mon out and see for yourself
This "clown" has turned the team around. 16-11 and 10-1 at home is a hell of a difference. Wisconsin was in the bonus pretty much the entire second half.
That said, this is a hell of a way to begin a press conference. I wish I could start all meetings with such fist-pounding bravado.
way to beat the booyahs at espn to this story--i'm just now seeing it on the midnight / 1 am sportcenter.
i especially love that he says "offensive reboanding," not "offensive rebounding." hilarious...
don't get me wrong Michiganers (and other assorted Northern bloggers). I was born in Pennsylvania, and spent most of my childhood between there and Ohio, but I've lived in Georgia for 12 years, and the accents seem more pronounced than I remember. It's just interesting to hear it from the other side after being called a Yankee talker for so long.
It's refreshing to see such a passionate coach--perhaps he'd be interested in coaching UGA men's BB...please? somebody? anybody...?
oh and my word verification?
fucnrag
let's try and keep it G-rated people:)
I thought the rebounding was pretty offensive.
Presser meltdowns rule. Love that video. He cares about his kids and wants them to do well. I dare say if we had him coaching the mens team for the Amaker years, we would not be the bottom of the barrel in basketball.
Mad, bad, sad, and look you can add, up all the words that rhyme with fad.
Is this guy a Canuck? Because dog gone it it was like canadian humor.
I love to see passion in a coach, and I really feel for him, this is on the front page of yahoo now!
Poor guy was more sedate today as the Women closed out their Big Ten season with a loss at home on Senior Day......
4 Seniors, 100% graduation rate, with 2 going on to Law School and 1staying at Michigan for Dental School....
Stay tuhed tho: the Big Ten tourney begins later this week and Michigan could play spoiler!
GO BLUE
Those are the most frustrating losses, for sure.
That was inappropriate and embarrassing. Mike Gundy stood up for his player; this is just Kevin Borseth going nuts.
He is a really good coach and it seems like he has really turned around the women's program with his passion and enthusiasm, but--you will all want to kill me for saying this--this is not Michigan behavior. Taking down the fort is one thing; letting your emotions get the best of you after a game is going a little too far. Keep the enthusiasm in the locker room and on the court.
No, this does not mean that I thought RR getting choked up during the interview was inappropriate.
I'd have to disagree Blue. I think that over the years our "Michigan Behavior" has gone from expected class when it's needed and passion in its appropriate place to a certain docility.
This made me think.
...And we all know I try to do as little of that as possible.
I think you're all way off on this. The problem was obviously offensive rebounding.
Sorry...late to the party.
It's a good article, Joshua.
"Whether it's coaching basketball, teaching economics or managing a Starbucks, if you treat people as though what they're doing doesn't really matter, what result do you expect?"
I did say that I recognize that he is turning around the program, and I agree that it is good to be very enthusiastic. I just do not like it when coaches go crazy at press conferences.
What I get now is that he didn't seem to be lashing out at the reporters like in most other meltdowns; it was all of his energy from the game being displayed afterward.
For what they are paying this guy, I would expect him to be a little more passionate about his job.
OOC, another one got arrested in five points. This one was for fighting. What dumb a$$ fights with a 320 pound o lineman? I'm starting to think Lou Holtz is back here!
Nice one Zen.
Why do I always miss the stuff Yost censors? I don't have a chance to make stupid people cry anymore, I've had to head on over to Brian's page for that. (It's like shooting fish in a barrel over there.)
In a completely non-related note somehow my cell number has escaped even though I guard it better than my virginity! Yep, sorry ladies, I'm "saving myself". Anyway some random scam number from the great state of FL won't leave me alone. Perhaps it's the melodic sound of my voice, but methinks it's the allure of ill gotten gains. So I called Sprint customer service and lo and behold they blocked the number. For free. Wonders never cease.
Hey T9-
Just a little something to make your head explode on the Double Secret Probation Jim Carty Caper.
That "story" reminds me of my freshman year roommate. He was the kind of guy who'd narc on a party in high school b/c it involved "underage drinking". Oh the horror!! (For the record I had a nomination to the Naval Academy and didn't drink due to fears of getting busted and losing it. I did, however, attend those parties and bet the freshman out of their milk money with the old "Swap-out vodka-for-water-and-chug-it Bet". Good times.)
Anyway, I always wondered if people like the roomie ever learn what real life is like. Apparently not- they just turn into Jim Carty.
Damn! the link doesn't work. Here's the meat of the post from The Victors message board via MGo
Carty article coming Sunday
Posted on March 3, 2008 at 10:17:03 PM by rekker
Heard from several sources that Carty’s big story is coming out Sunday, March 9. It will focus on two things:
1. Athletes taking independent study courses in a pattern that Carty finds “troubling.” This was discussed last week. The courses in question were taken over the spring and summer terms (May – August) at the Ed School and Psych department. Many of these independent studies were supervised by a small number of faculty—so it’s easy to be “shocked.” Non-athletes also took the courses and real work was done (no Auburn issues here), but Carty is apparently troubled by the fact that athletes were overrepresented in the summer term (who would have figured?).
2. Some old data (1990s) on how athletes’ admissions files were not as strong as those of non-athletes admitted to U-M. Again, who would have guessed? The data were supplied by a Lecturer in Kinesiology (one step down from adjunct) who worked in U-M admissions in the early 1990s. Not sure why he’s pissed (not reappointed??), but he is apparently trying to take everyone down with him. It’s troubling that he is dragging out extremely old data that he should not have taken with him to settle scores.
My take: a little smoke but basically a big nothing. Fifteen-year-old admissions disparities and athletes being overrepresented in summer courses elicits a big a yawn.
Carty will undoubtedly reprise his “more in sorry than in anger” routine. ("I love Michigan, but it should be better than this.") But it's a manufactured scandal and the bottom line is that there are no violations. To anyone who understands D1 athletics, nothing that is at all surprising.
In fact, I'm surprised that this is all they could find. Carty is either a very poor investigative journalist, or U-M is cleaner than I thought.
I realize that in the "off Season" it is difficult to come up with things to write for a blog or a newspaper, but I think that Carty should find better things to do than tear down the local establishment. Isn't that like biting the hand that feeds you? Seriously, How about he puts up a photo of Natalie and discusses the benefits of playing golf. THAT would be better entertainment, even for me! (well, add a photo of Brady on the golf course, THEN I will start walking the greens!) :o)
Get a life Carty, stop trying to be something you are not. I have an even better Idea....how about you investigate the sheer annoyance of the local police who seem to watch every blasted parking spot in Ann Arbor and NEVER fail to give me a ticket when my meter runs out 15 minutes before I return! Or how about the $25 ticket I got over the weekend for parking in a no parking until 10am spot (I pulled into it at 09:50).....yeah....how about an article on the cost of parking in Ann Arbor and how the fact that my parking tickets alone is paying someone's salary! (EEK, where did that come from?) Oh yeah.....Jim Carty.....get a life.)
I hear there are cars and exercise equipment involved.
(just in case T-9's head didn't explode)
Thanks for the heads up Tom C. I can always count on you to tell me when my fly is down or I have something in my teeth.
Btw what's your sources tell you is a good place to get some oysters in Greenville? I know the Blockhouse does a 2 for 1 night on Monday;'s, but that place is a madhouse then.
Apparently Amaker is skirting NCAA recruiting rules. Nice. Now those awful Crimson fans can watch as "Tommy" squanders all of that talent by not coaching, all while lowering Harvard's standards.
I've said it before, and I will say it again: Jim Carty is just upset because Lloyd Carr won't return his phone calls. What I find troubling about Jim Carty is his apparent sense of entitlement and his belief that anything he does is so special. He is a delusional spoiled weasel who thinks too highly of his own actions...and he is just a local reporter.
The unfortunate thing is that when we complain about him or Drew Sharp--and there is so much to be annoyed about--we make that guy bigger than he actually is. I mean, who would think that a sports reporter from the Ann Arbor News would create such a stir? Sadly, Carty is willing to create that very stir even if it means defaming a university to which he claims loyalty. More likely, the empty story will raise a thoughtless eyebrow or two as Harbaugh's comments did last year while Carty gets to see his name mentioned once in The Charleston Gazette.
OOC Don't know about oysters in Greenville. Come to Cola and I'll hook you up. We now have an investigation into alleged police brutality on the arrest of your gamecock. Seems they beat this kid in front of a local sports radio guy.
It is scary to see a middle-aged guy get this excited about women's basketball.
I mean, it's not like it's WWE professional wrestling or something.
This is easily the most schizophrenic thread ever. And I missed another censored comment! Damn the man!
Either way, this is such a "non-story" story it makes me sick. And I'll ahve to defend it to a bunch of ignorant sparty fans who heard from somebody's hairdresser who called into talk radio how we've been cheating. Yeah, can't wait for that.
Catie- looks like today might be the day we find out if you'll NOT be moving to Canada (or if there's still a slim chance).
Oh, and shepard gave a verbal to Les and LSU. No comment, but I'm crushed.
Way to ruin my day, Russell. I don't know what the delusional ones on mgoblog will say after this. Aren't they up to Tate Forcier now? Or is it going to be like, "I would rather have TP than Shepard. TP is a better lover."
Joshua the censored comment was me hiding a rather bad mis spelling. While I don't hold anyone to a high standard on such matters, I've found that my profession has turned my mind to mush where spelling is concerned.
Josh, that was me. I sometimes delete my comments if I notice major errors or it doesn't say what I want. Oh, and I made comments suggesting a Jewish-Puerto Rican conspiracy in 9/11. That didn't sit too well with Yost.
Damn I thought it was something juicy.
....and Never go with a hippie to a second location. (Today's randomness has been brought to you by the letter "R")
how do you get CSF and brain tissue off of a computer screen????
CARTY SUCKS
Anyone else sad about Brett retiring????
My son has a huge man crush on Brett and my older son emailed me today to warn me about Brett Retiring and that I might want to call my younger son to comfort him!
T-
Would those be your brain fragments or did you go all Terminator on Carty?
It wasn't juicy this time, but other times my posts are actually letters to Penthouse that I decided at the last minute would not be appropriate for the message board. You are all so lame.
Dear College Football Forum, you will never believe what happened to me the other night...
