A final thought on Miles

If you're a regular reader, you know I was never sold on LSU's Les Miles for the Michigan head coaching job. Not at all. Frankly, I don't think he's a great coach and, as the country saw last week, there's a bluster about him that borders on bullshit.

The histrionics on display last weekend, when he "angrily" said he was staying at LSU right before the SEC championship game, was a load of crap. If Miles was so concerned about his team and such a distraction, why didn't Les call a quickie press conference the day after Lloyd retired and state unequivocally that he was staying at LSU? Would have saved poor Les a lot of stress from the bad, evil rumor people.

But he didn't. Because he was interested. He himself invited the circus and played people.

So spare us all the forced indignation, Lester.

Mitch Albom put it best in his excellent column, Les Miles was the wrong coach for a great job. Talking about the Tiger coach's press conference, Albom writes:

"Right. Stop. So long, Les. We've put up with a lot of baloney this past week in the Michigan coaching search. But getting belligerent about a process he encouraged, he invited -- and he ultimately parlayed into a jackpot? Sorry. Not swallowing that meatball."

Bingo.

But nice (over) acting job. You almost looked like you believed it because you said it really, really loud.

I'm anticipating the Drew Sharp article on this matter...

It would read something like... Les Miles turning down the Michigan job shows that Michigan is not an elite coaching position and that no name coach in the country would even think about the opportunity...

Oh Yeah said...

I don't buy that at all dezzi. I am worried about who Michigan will get, because a program like they have always had, and the type of program they like to run, thye will not settle for just anyone. I think Miles got his knickers knocked because someone blew his surprise out of the water and LSU retaliated before Michigan could. So Miles tried to make Michigan and Herbie look stupid for outting him. I don't think its because Michigan isn't elite, but I do agree that it may not be for everyone, nor as easy as originally thought. There are some BIG shoes to fill here and not very many have the hoo-has to do it!

Here's Drew Not-So-Sharp's article, and as expected it's as anti-Michigan as it could possibly be. I don't understand why we've got to put up with these Michigan haters (Sharp, Herbstreit, Musburger) being regular reporters for the Wolverines. Why can't Mike Tirico cover college ball?

I couldn't agree more. Buh Bye.

As for the Drew Sharp article, it wasn't as inflammatory as he typically is, he almost sounded sorry for Martin and Michigan. And he definitely didn't show any love to Miles.

Once Saban's player's are gone, the pathetic coach the really is Les Miles will emerge.

Sharp, like Cowherd, are just instigators. Ignore them like you would the taunts of a toddler.

he's a blowhard & his histrionics this past week shown his true colors brightly.

be thankful UM, this worked it self out as it did.

Mozbrad you forgot Mark May.

My take on the whole Les Miles thing is somewhere somehow MI did make him an offer and it wasn't in the bazillion dollar range because that's not what MI does and Les was insulted so he lashed out. I actually think that Herbstriet was right with his source saying that Miles was coming but I bet there was a dollar sign that didn't match the pillow in Les's lil dream world so he freaked out about it. Either way MI should be able to get one hell of a coach from somewhere.

Nice blog there Victory... This thread has more posts than your entire blog. I'll guess you'll need to come up with something more than "Michigan is arrogant" and "dude, I'm gonna link to your Michigan is arrogant page when I write tonight".

Must suck to go through life with an inferiority complex like that!

mgoblue, hahaha. Did i touch a nerve? And I'm hoping you were knocking how many comments I've had on my blog compared to this thread. If you really meant "posts", I have 29 posts, whereas this thread has 11 comments. 29 > 11. Click the "Older Posts" button next time. But enough about semantics. "Pride Comes Before the Fall." So far, so true....

MGoBlue93 said...

Nope... victory, you didn't touch a nerve at all. After all, I got into my first choice where you had to settle for Moo U. Unless you wanted to major in restaurant management in the first place that is... after all, Michigan doesn't offer such a degree.

I just keep thinking how pathetic Sparty is to walk around all the time bitchin about Michigan instead of focusing on your own damn team. But perhaps that comes from you wanting to be associated with a winner. Because when it comes to anything Moo U., you'll always be Michigan's defeated little brother.

Mgoblue, trust me, MSU was my first and only choice. Keep letting the Mzone feed you your only information regarding MSU. Such as in "know your foe" for MSU, of course its left out that MSU has the #1 secondary education program in the nation, a top Veterinary Medicine school, and has one of the best in Criminal Justice programs as well. You talk as if MSU is a degree factory, whereas UM's Kinesiology program is an absolute joke, which is why so many athletes take it, along with General Studies. See: Jim Harbaugh. Also, I'm sure you remember the Florida president ripping UM's academics as well. When a University president and a former football alum in Harbaugh tell it like it is, you guys freak. Get off your high horse and face the facts. Michigan is a prestigious university, no doubt. But spare me your elitist attitude, it is not as good as alum's like to brag about.

As far as wanting to be associated with a winner..MSU is just fine by itself. The only school to win multiple national championships in Hockey, Football, and Basketball sounds like a winner to me. Also, its likely that MSU will end up with the same record as UM this year in football, each being(8-5). Just sayin'...

MGoBlue93 said...

My high horse??? Whatever... you're the one with the MSU blog which focuses on U of M. Spin your tales victory spin...

Besides, you DON'T want to compare running totals of national championships. For all of Michigan's flaws you don't want to compare that decades-long piece of shit football program in East Lansing or Michigan's highly ranked medical, engineering, business, engineering, dental, and law schools. BTW, how did that countdown clock work for Moo U. this season??? Should I even start talking about endowment or research grant totals???

Or some of the figures which help define the economic performance of the nation come out of Michigan's economics department -- you cannot say the same for Moo U.

Or how one of the methods networks use to send data across the world was developed at Michigan -- you cannot say the same for Moo U.

Or alums which have gained notoriety. All for their civil service, contributions to the arts, and entrepreneurship. Moo U. doesn't hold a candle to Michigan in that regard either.

How many presidents have visited Moo U. and given speeches like when President Kennedy gave his Peace Corps speech from the steps of the Michigan Union???

So call us arrogant, call us elitist, call us scUM... we've heard it all before!!! You're not the first and you won't be the last.

The fact of the matter is you're affiliated with MSU and you spend more time trying to tear down U of M than the time spent trying to support Moo U. I called you on your BS and that's how you react -- pathetic!!!

Every metric, statistic, lie you quote (except for BB... U of M sucks at men's BB) I can do you one better. You are so way out of your league, you haven't a clue. You're starting to bore me. Peace out!

Listen, instead of creating another massively-long post, check out for yourself everything that MSU has accomplished: http://www.msu.edu/thisismsu/points_pride.html

Take off the blinders and realize there is much more to the academic world other than Michigan. I can admit Michigan is prestigious and excels in academics, but yet you can't even fathom that MSU does great work in academics. It really is just proving everyone's stereotypes right regarding UofM. Keep up the goodwork...

I'm done with this, you can have the last word. I don't even know why I tried, trying to tell a UM fan/grad/whatever you are that the world doesn't revolve around Ann Arbor is impossible. Goodnight.

P.S. - Northwestern is the academic class of the Big 10, not Michigan.

I think the Coach at Cincinatti would be a good choice for Michigan. He already has a recruiting base in Michigan from the past and now Ohio and he has won everywhere he coached. I don't think that last point should be overlooked a lot of these "genius coaches" can't win except with other people's recruits. Go Blue

Mikoyan said...

I think the ability to recruit should definately be a factor since Michigan is probably looking for the long haul.
