Sparty Spelling: Where the hell is "Gegoria?"

Sometimes our Spartan brethren make it too easy.

No, I'm not talking about that soft coverage on Michigan's final two scoring drives. I'm talking about the picture below sent in by MZone reader ES, taken during his trip to East Lansing last Saturday for the big Meeeeeechigan victory.

Check out the unique MSU spelling of "Georgia" on the Spart-o-tron...

Apparently, this Spartan has had these problems in the past. He was fired from his previous job for the following (this picture was actually taken in Kalamazoo, MI so the possibility is there!):

i had heard that after the 2001 msu game, the conference changed the rules for time keepers and all the "homers" had to get new jobs (clock is now run by part of the officiating crew).

looking at the pic, i can guess what job they gave "Sparty Bob".

Matt said...

That spelling isn't even close...

I wrote a post about Saturday's game on my blog. It's not a football blog necessarily, as I don't really focus on anything in particular, but I do write about Michigan football pretty often. I'd really appreciate it if you'd check it out.

Not sure if it was the same guy, but I think somewhere in the third quarter they showed and announced the Sparty hockey game that was on Friday, and the guy announced Alaska shut them out 3-0, and put that score on the jumbotron. About ten seconds later someone realizes that they were dumb and they had to re-announce the game which was a 3-1 win for Sparty, and fixed the score on the board as well.

Hey, you should post the video of that dumbass Henne running to the locker room after the game then falling and doing a face plant in front of everyone. Henne still rhymes with douchbag.

Yes, Ronnie, Henne's slip was much more embarrassing than getting your asses handed to you in the last 6 mins of the game.

It would have been an even sadder reflection on the Geography department if they had spelled, "Pontiac" wrong, huh?

So, you got beaten by a guy who's name rhymes with douchebag. 4 times in a row.
Way to take some kind of victory away from that game, I guess.

Hmmm...

since SEC teams never come north of the Manson-Nixon line, perhaps we should be a little more lenient of a Big Ten scoreboard operator not knowing how to spell the name of one of their schools

Did you see this from Dantonio? It was in the Free Press today.

MSU coach Dantonio to U-M: 'They need to check themselves'
November 5, 2007

By SHANNON SHELTON

FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Editor's note: Story updated at 2:41 p.m.

Michigan State plays Purdue this weekend, but head coach Mark Dantonio had much more to say about MSU’s 28-24 loss to Michigan last Saturday and the extracurricular activities that took place after the game.

Dantonio was asked if he was amused by U-M’s players pausing for a “moment of silence” at midfield. The action was intended to mock Dantonio’s statement on a radio broadcast after U-M lost to Appalachian State. When informed of that loss, Dantonio jokingly asked if he should have a “moment of silence” for the Wolverines.

“I find a lot of the things that they do amusing,” Dantonio said on Monday. “They need to check themselves sometimes. But just remember, pride comes before the fall.”

Dantonio also addressed Mike Hart’s comments after the game in which he referred to MSU as the “little brother” of U-M.

“Does Hart have a little brother or is he the little brother?” Dantonio asked. “I don’t know, he’s…”

Then Dantonio placed his hand up to his chest to illustrate Hart’s stature.

“I don’t know, I didn’t really see that comment, but like I said… let’s just say I won’t comment on that.”

He paused for two seconds.

“I guess I can’t help myself. As I said earlier, it’s not over. I’m going to be a coach here for a long time. It’s not over. It’s just starting. I’m very proud of our football team and I’m very proud of the way our football team handled themselves after the game as well.”

“We don’t have to disrespect people. We’ll come to play. We don’t have to be disrespected; we don’t have to disrespect people. But if they want to make a mockery of it, so be it. Their time will come.”

funny but he sounds an awful lot like Fat Charlie telling people to "laugh it up now", doesn't he?

so, whose "i'll be back" post game whining sounds more credible? Fat Charlie or Sparty Mark???

sorta hard to get worked up about either, if you ask me.

whetstonebuck said...

Maybe your in-state rivalry is going to get much more interesting in the next few years. That would be fun.

Does this mean Dantonio's not on your coaching replacement short list any more? I figure it's a mutual separation.

Did Tedford fall off the chart yet?

You all aren't still looking at Les is More are you?

I think you guys should start speaking sweet nothings to Mike
Bellotti.

Wait, what am I saying? Isn't Joe Pa going to be available soon?

whetstonebuck said...

SiCster,

"so, whose "i'll be back" post game whining sounds more credible? Fat Charlie or Sparty Mark???"

Don't forget to add Mikey "likes it" Hart to the list. Isn't that what he said about sticking around for Nov. 17? His chance at immortality is fast approaching.

surrounded in columbus said...

yes, the 3 amigos (Hart, Henne, & Long) all stayed for their senior season to try to win an outright conference championship (which entails beating tosu) and a bowl.

i would think that most objective judges would put their chances of making good as better than Fat Charlies or Sparty's.

oddly enough, if they don't win the next two games, they'll have a very good chance of winning a bowl- who does the motor city match the big ten up against???

whetstonebuck said...

Sic,

As of a couple of weeks ago the ESPN prognosticators picked...

Motor City
(Big Ten No. 7 vs. MAC No. 1/2) Indiana vs. Central Michigan

surrounded in columbus said...

i think we can CMU. seriously, i haven't honestly thought we'd beat anyone each week since the appy debacle. each win has been a bona fide surprise.

but i'm beginning to believe in this team, and i'm going out on a limb and predicting w/ beat the Chips.

honest to gawd.

Stu Mandel has you guys playing Florida in the Capitol One Bowl...

MGoBlue93 said...

hmmm... last time tOSU went to the championship game Michigan still went to the Rose Bowl.

For Mandel's prediction to come true, Michigan would have to lose out.

If they beat Wisconsin, we're Pasadena bound. The Tournament of Roses LOVES Michigan. We fill their hotels and snap up all their tickets prior to our annual loss.

Then, regardless of the outcome versus tOSU, it's either Roses as Big 10 Champs, or Roses as 2nd place in the conference.

HOWEVER, Mandel does make an interesting point; nobody wants to see a rematch of Oregon v. Michigan. I think the Committee would prefer Texas over WVU though (or even LSU if they were to slip up in the SEC Championship game).

Katie said...

Hmmmm....Dantonio, 1st I was worried about him going into this game. He has the potential to create a good team, so I believe him when he says it's not over, I think they have the potential to give us a run for our money......eventually.......maybe. Anyway............2nd, one thing that our team can NOT be accused of, is being poor sports. Seriously folks, we LOST to Appy State, and these guys have held their head high. So when Dantonio made his comment on having a moment of silence at our loss to APPY State, it was not totally disrespectful for our team to hold a moment of silence when they lost to us. People out there who have taken such great joy in our loss to Appy State, need to be able to take it when we give a back a little. Was Hart's little brother comment a bit much? Yeah, probably, but it was not a horrible offense, and after all that I am sure he has endured since the start of the season, he probably deserves a moment to spout off. I am offically adding Dantonio to my list of hated coaches, right alongside Tressel and Meyer. Buddhist believe in living in the moment.....THIS moment.....WE WON and he can SUCK IT! (ahhh, I feel better now!)

IF osu finishes 1st, the Rose Bowl gets top pick of all remaining BCS eligible teams - it doesn't go automatically to the runner up in the Big Ten. Last year, they picked UM because you had one loss (and a close one). This year, should you beat Wisky and lose to OSU, I think it might be a stretch to think that they'd pick a 3 loss team. Actually I don't know if UM would be BCS eligible if you lose to OSU. I think it would drop you out of the top 14 and thus ineligible.

bcs rules

Katie said...

Sru, THIS season in CFB, there are plenty of teams with 2 and 3 losses, so it isn't out of the question that we could go to the Rose Bowl, nevertheless, you do have a point. I just think this season is by far the most bizarre season in CFB.

JAH said...

A Chad Henne haiku for ronnie:

Little Brother State
Has never beaten my team
So Sparty trips me

Douchebag indeed. And Ronnie, by "my" I refer to Chad's team, not the twenty-odd UM teams Sparty has managed to beat over the last hundred years.

surrounded in columbus said...

Katie,
several papers, sports blogs, have suggested that we could beat Wisconsin, lose to tosu, and then go to the Rose.

personally, i can't see that happening, even if we were still BCS eligible w/ 3 losses.

first, a lot would depend upon the picking order (which i don't know off the top of my head)for the bowls. obviously, the BCS game gets the top two. there would be 4 other automatic BCS teams, and two more "at large" teams. w/ so many one or two loss teams available- it's hard to see them taking a 3 loss michigan.

second, i don't think the rose would really want us. they wouldn't want a rematch if the Ducks are repping the PAC. also, we've been there 3 times in the last 4 years. w/ 3 losses, just how many of us are going out there (again) to watch us get clocked by Oregon (again). ticket sales would be tuff.

on the other hand, we can't finish worse than 2nd in the conference (which if you had told me back in September, i'd have never believed).

so, it's pasadena or orlando for new years.

not bad for a team that couldn't beat app st.

Katie said...

SIC, I understand, I am just saying in THIS season of CFB, NEVER say never........who knows what the end of the season might look like!!! I don't have a good feeling about playing Oregan again (although it would be nice to beat them). I just have great hope that we run the table and win the bowl game.......it would be a nice way to see out this years seniors...........however, my faith level doesn't match this hope.......I most certainly would welcome it if they can do it.

MGoBlue93 said...

it doesn't go automatically to the runner up in the Big Ten.

The Rose Bowl gets the first picks after the NC game is set. It's how the presidents got the Rose Bowl to agree to join the BCS.

MGoBlue93 said...

Katie, I pasted a link in a different thread, but you should go check out detnews.com and see Dantonio bellyaching about Hart.

Now granted, Hart does have lose lips with the media: ND guarantee, last year after the tOSU loss...

But it seems to me Sparty was doing most of the talking about this game. And I'm pretty sure Schembechler Hall doesn't have a countdown to Moo U. clocks in any of its halls.

Petty unprecedented a FREAKING head coach cries about a player at a press conference. Maybe Dantonio is trying to be that Okie State coach... only not, and in a horrible way.

At any rate, Dantonio's behavior isn't helping Moo U. shake that 2nd rate program stigma. Here's to another 360+ days of "bowing down" douchebag!

srudoff said...

mgoblue,

that's unfortunately not true - read the bcs rules i posted a link to earlier.

the first pick goes to the bowl that lost the #1 team to the bcs title game, 2nd pick goes to the bowl that lost the #2 team to the bcs title game.

so last year, the rose got the #1 pick because they lost osu. sugar got #2 pick because they lost florida to the title game.

you're thinking of the special rule in which the big ten #1 team and the pac ten #1 team meet to play in the bcs title game. then and only then would the rosebowl get dibs on whomever they want. this may happen this year if lsu loses between now and the end of the season.

Mikoyan said...

Interesting way to spell Georgia.

I think for Michigan to make a 1st Tier BCS bowl, they have to beat Wisconsin and Ohio State. There are too many teams out there with 1 or no losses to get passed up.

I don't know...I still think the BCS needs to die a horrible flaming death. Maybe this year will be the nail.

Speaking of nails, there is a pretty interesting editorial in the Washington Post about the Navy win.

I really want UM to beat OSU. I mean more than anything in the world. But, Orlando is 35 miles from my house, and to actually see the teram this year would be great.
If Orlando is the destination, BBQ at my house.
