Spare us the righteous indignation, Mark

So let me see if I get this straight...

Before he even picks out his office furniture upon being named MSU head coach, Mark Dantonio told the world he'd put a "countdown clock" up in the MSU locker room in order to tick off the days until the Michigan game.

Then, when asked about the Wolverines' loss this year to Appalachian State, Dantonio jokingly asked if he should have a "moment of silence" for the Wolverines.

Most recently, in the days leading up to last Saturday's M/MSU game, Dantonio asked how long MSU was going to continue to "bow down to Michigan."

Yet when Michigan rises up to the challenge and beats MSU - after having to listen to all the crap above, suddenly Dantonio can't take any smack talk directed back at his team.

In his press conference yesterday, Dantonio expressed his anger over Michigan players pausing for a “moment of silence” at midfield at the end of the game in response to Dantonio's Appy State comment.

“This game is an important game. If they want to mock us, I’m telling them, it’s not over. They can print all that crap all they want all over their locker room — it’s not over. It will never be over here. It’s just starting,” said Dantonio.

Yeah, great line for a shitty action flick, D-man. But weren't they simply responding to your mock-fest in September? Now you're complaining? Wow, what a set of brass ones.

Then, when asked about Mike Hart's comments in which he referred to MSU as Michigan's "little brother," Dantonio responded like an 8th grader trying to impress his friends in gym class.

“Does Hart have a little brother or is he the little brother?” Dantonio asked. “I don’t know, he’s…that tall.”

Dantonio placed his hand to his chest to illustrate Hart’s stature.

Ooooooh. Good one, Stifler.

These are college kids. And you basically called the Michigan players out with the clock shit and mocked them with you moment of silence line. So you think the Michigan players might have been a little anxious to do some talking of their own after they won? They didn't say shit before the game - you did. Let me say it again: you put a fucking countdown clock up in the locker room!

So get over yourself. Seriously. And if you can't take the response when you lose (due to some crappy coaching, by the way) then don't start it by talking shit in the first place. Because to bitch about it, when those you mocked first strike back, makes you look a little silly.

Oh, and the fine folks at MVictors had a lovely new idea for your countdown clock...

Exactly my thoughts! I read the story again this morning and I did not get the part of him mocking Hart's stature, that is NOT cool! I would bet money that if we had LOST our team would NOT in anyway have said anything bad about them. We have proven that already in the first two games of the season. AND to say that we were LUCKY.....that they felt they deserved to win? Seriously, the first half we played fine (Henne was off, but our Defense held them down) It is not as if we played like shit the entire game then came back and won. They beat us coming out from half time, then we took it back. Isn't that a sign of an accomplished team? We never give up, we fight to win....OHHHH it steams me!! He is an ASS and could be related to Urban Meyer. I don't care what you say.......I would take Carr anyday over dickheads like him. GRRRRRR!!!!

After we beat State again in '08 and '09, is Dantonio gone regardless of their overall record, or only if they still suck in general? Because if he puts this damn much focus on the game against us and can't win it in three tries, what does that say about him as a coach?

talk about your forward thinking!! this kind of comment makes no sense at all - if it does, i want to talk 'stocks' and 'lottery numbers' with this guy!

First thing first. To say UM-MSU is a "rivalry" is like saying Michigan fans love Ohio State. It's just not true. Rivalry implies that two equally matched programs battle each other supremacy, or at least meaningfully compete against each other. I'm a rabid Michigan fan, and sure I have a bias, but MSU as a football program doesn't even come anywhere near Michigan. It's not a rivalry. It's an intense intersate match-up. I am arrogant when it comes to MSU. Who wouldn't be? Michigan wins 70% of the time. MSU should feel in inferior. They ARE inferior.

As for our retarded cousin Mark Dan-ass-wipio, he's really in a position where he HAS to hipe the possibility of competing with Michigan and taking pot shots at Big Blue. I mean, the last guy got run out of town after never beating Michigan and they have never truly competed against Michigan. He's just trying to endear himself to the MSU fanbase -- a fanbase that HAS to be tired of getting beat my Michigan all the time. Plus, if MSU needs the moment of silence, the little brother comment, and a countdown clock to fire them up for the interstate rivalry, well, let's just say their program will always be in the dire straits and doldrums it's exibited since 1987. The guy's a douche, his program is a laughing stock, and I really could care less about ANYTHING anyone from MSU has to say.

BTW. I know I'm tired of losing to O-State, but it's just cyclical. We owned OSU under Cooper. Tressel has owned Carr. I was at the 2005 game at home when Troy Smith guided that last minute drive to beat us under Hermann's prevent D. I told the O-State fan sitting next to me that I know knew what it must have felt like under Coach Cooper. He laughed and said that he vividly remembers all the times he's walked away dejected after Michigan beat OSU. Now THAT's a rivalry.

I like all the controversy that Dantonio has injected. Our anger after "clockgate" was beginning to dissipate and now we should have the fuel to beat their crappy team for another five years!

i'm willing to admit that Hart shoots off his mouth a bit. nothing whacked- no "i'm a soldier" sorta crap, but he does say things that might better be left unsaid (ironically, Harbaugh had the same problem).

it's part of his enthusiasm and at the end of the day, he's still a 20 something year old kid. not an excuse, but it happens.

Dantonio? well, "he's a man. a 40 year old man", or something like that. he's supposed to be a grown up.

for him as a coach to even react to this in his presser is f'ng stupid. go ahead and let Hoyer piss & moan.

it's bad enough to react to the statements w/ a "we'll focus on this next year" sort of bland threat. how stupid is it to make "height" jokes, and declare it's personal? that puts him at the level of a little league dad arguing w/ the ump about calling his kid "out" at 3rd base.

he's the coach of a team w/ a 20 yr history of letting emotion, lack of poise, and a general lack of maturity blow games. part of what he's supposed to do is change the culture in E. Lansing.

acting like this ain't gonna do it.

My general rule of thumb has been this: Winners get to mock whomever they want.

But what do I know, I'm just a dumb ol' Gegoria grad.

Ram61 said...

How is putting up a countdown clock mocking the other team? Dantonio isn't stupid, he knows this game is huge to his team (probably not the other way around, but still) so yeah why not show a little enthusiasm for the UM game. It obviously worked, MSU has nowhere near UM's talent and gave them all they could handle.

WingRG said...

I have to agree with Ram61. I don't know what part of the countdown clock is so offensive to the UM fanbase. And SiC is right, Hart talks way too much (he backs it up most of the time) and not only after wins or after he's been provoked by the opposing team.

He's an emotional guy, i get that, but there's plenty of emotional guys that don't feel it necessary to insult the other team with their post game comments.

J. Lichty said...

Yost said the clock called out Michigan not that it was mocking, the mocking was the "moment of silence."

Carr would never do that when MSU loses to NW, Iowa or the other big ten teams.

Those who say that Hart's little brother comments will be used as bulletin board material, who cares. They have a frigging countdown clock to this game (apparently at the expense of all of their other big ten games which they happen to suck at). I don't think they will have any more motivation than they already do.

Dantonio showed his true colors. State will probably beat Michigan at sometime in the future. Maybe even next year when Fumblor takes the reigns and Hart is running rough shod over the NFL, but god I hope Dantonio is not around to see the next MSU victory over M.

Matt said...

No it's a rivalry. We just own the bragging rights.

Jehuu Caulcrick is just as guilty. He complains like the little prick (Caulprick!) that he is. Mgoblog pointed out that while he complained about sportsmanship, he was one of the ringleaders of the flag-planting at Notre Dame. Proof that no one from MSU has the right to complain about sportsmanship. Like someone else said, they can dish it out, but they can't take it.

And then they go saying the same usual crap about how we always come up with excuses when we lose and that we're fairweather fans. Michigan fans have not been fairweather fans this year. People in the media (ahem, Sporting News) have been saying that we would give up on the team, but we didn't. Attendance at games didn't even drop!

RRH said...

Regardless of what MSU says, responding in kind just brings UM down to their level. Who wants to see UM become another team of trash talking punks? Mikey needs to keep his mouth shut and play football. Michigan football is better than this.

Jason said...

Yeah...And HE'S A MAN!

HE'S 40!

Jason said...

As a Michigan grad and fan, it's sad to see him not just using tactics similar to Tressel, but almost literally copying them...

The difference?

Tressel can back them up with his team on the field...

If you can't back them up, you just look like a douche...

Carl said...

Um, your little clock gag says countdown to "Michigan Loss." Didn't you brain surgeons mean "Loss to Michigan?" What a bunch of idiots you are...

Carl said...

BTW, hire someone to proof read for you "mocked them with you moment of silence" Yeah, nice grammar...

Yost said...

Why hire someone, Carl, when we can have MSU fans like you come here and do it for free for us?

Thanks for your help.

carl tabb said...

Carl,
Good call. We never refer to The Horror as the Appalachian State loss or the Oregon loss or another OSU loss. Idiots...

WingRG said...

Carl,
spelling and grammar are now an issue on this site, but not on a Sparty scoreboad? Freakin' priceless!

Yost said...

Touche' Wing.

srudoff said...

Yost,

I can only hope that you didn't run into the same problems searching for pics of 'huge balls' to get the pic for this story that you ran into searching for 'hot college guys' for that other story (the colt brennan gratuitous pic)!!!

Jim Harbaugh Scramble said...

Stay classy Carl,
lemme guess - bitter Sparty fan?

Hemlock Philosopher said...

Sparties are usually not so parsimonious - they get laid more. I think Carl is a Domer, where even the football players have to pay to get some play.

Mikoyan said...

I thought OSU is where football players had to pay. Didn't one of their guys get caught with a hooker?

WingRG said...

Mikoyan,
it was both: one of Domer linemen and our (Buckeye) 3rd string quarterback both got hit for solicitation.

Jessica said...

Carl - you are seemingly the only one confused by this clock. The rest of us seem to be able to figure out what's meant by it.

Go be bitter about your loss somewhere else, be you a Spartan or a Domer.

MSU fans seem to have a history of having troubles w/ clocks.

An ellipsis [ … ] proves to be a handy device when you're quoting material and you want to omit some words. The ellipsis consists of three evenly spaced dots (periods) with spaces between the ellipsis and surrounding letters or other marks. Let's take the sentence, "BTW, hire someone to proof read for you 'mocked them with you moment of silence' Yeah, nice grammar...," where the ellipsis serves to replace the words, "oh shit, is 'proofread' one word, and is my sentence structure what it should be if I am riding someone else's ass for English mistakes on a blogsite? I'm such a douche."

This moment in English was brought to you by Carl. Thanks, Carl.

Mikoyan said...

Isn't there a corollary to Goodwin's Law that an argument is also lost when grammar is brought up?

I have never hated little brother more then I do now. Dantonio can joke around and make fun of Michigan, but once he gets a taste of his own medicine he runs his mouth like a child. It's not over he says over and over. Guess what Sparty its over you lost to your Big Brother again. You are still bowing down to Michigan.

Instead of being a good coach and moving on to your their next game Dantonio has to look back at the game they just lost. Move on and prepare your team for Purdue. So your team can make a bowl game, which will be very hard since they have Purdue and Penn State still left on their schedule.

Corey said...

This might've already been said, but there were some jibes taken at the Sparty clock before the game in press conferences... so you can't really say they "didn't say anything."

Not that I really care.

David said...

I love that countdown clock...the clock in the photo should be set to 10 days 17 hours and 50 minutes and counting!(November 17th for you Michigan students) You can buy your Buckeye countdown clock at www.greatrivaliesusa.com. Go Bucks

Josiah said...

Hart once again proved what a cocky arrogant player he is. Every game he talks more trash than anyone on the field, after almost every play he is saying stuff to the defense. And he is good, I'll give him that, but why make a comment such as the little brother one? Because he's just an ass, that's why.

Jeff said...

Mike Hart has gone 4-0 against sParty with 674 rushing yards. He can talk as much smack as he wants. He's earned it.

Uh, ummm...never mind.

srudoff said...

:)

i guess he earned it after going 0-3 against osu too.....

Ryan said...

Dantonio is taking the "rivalry" thing a bit too seriously, but come on. Say Lloyd loses to Ohio State again this year and is fired. I'd be disappointed if his replacement didn't have this kind of enthusiasm.

Jessica said...

David - are you magically playing the Spartans again on Nov. 17th? You see, last time I checked, that clock had "SPARTANS" and "Michigan State" plastered all over it.

I wasn't aware that your great rival was, in fact, Michigan STATE. Thanks for clearing that up!

Katie said...

Carr won't get fired.Period. tOSU loss or not. The question is, will he resign or does he still have some game left in him?

Carl said...

Yost, Jim Harbaugh Scramble, Hemlock Philosopher and Jessica:

I am not a Michigan State nor an ND fan I just happened upon this blog and noticed something blatently obvious which all of you idiots failed to realize. The clock should read "Countdown to Next Loss to Michigan."

WingRG,

Nice spelling on scoreboard you inbred moron.

goat7ed,

Thanks for the English lession but the ellipsis in this case was to spare the writer of the blog any further insults from me. The ellipsis took the place of "you fucking moron." Call it taking the high road the first time around. Thanks for forcing me into using the profanity... (that ellipsis takes the place of "you pathetic asshammer.") Now go play with some dangling participles while you stroke off.

surrounded in columbus said...

is it me? or does seem angry?

and if he's not an ND or MooSU fan, you gotta wonder how someone could be so fired up over a typo?

now that i think of it, my junior high english teacher was some dick named "carl". he went gonzo over stuff like this too.

hmmmm.

Jessica said...

Ohh, the angst, Carl. It burns us.

Yost said...

Carl,

Normally I would delete such comments as yours, but it's not often we get such a complete asshat stopping by. Thus, I kept your stuff up for the humor value.

I notice you think we're all such idiots but a) you came back AGAIN and b) felt compelled to defend yourself from such idiots. Issues?

And the part about folks on this site "forcing you to use profanity" was priceless. Simply priceless.

Jessica said...

I don't know about you, Yost, but I know I really fucking hate it people force me to use profanity, damn it.

goat7ed said...

Carl...

Good catch on Wing's post...

...we could all use more spelling lessions.

Now, do like the doctor said...

...two of the oval yellow ones in the morning...

...and the pretty blue one before bedtime.

Also, you still got a little spittle on the corner of your mouth...
