Fuel to the Fire

Speaking of bands, MZone reader Sru points us toward the YouTube clip below. It's a vid shot at the 'Shoe after Michigan's loss to a certain 1-AA school in a game you might have heard about.

Now it's one thing for Tosu fans to react like, well, Tosu fans. But listen closely as the The Best Damn Band Dressed Like the Salvation Army Guy Outside the Mall at Christmas (TBDBDLTSAGOTMAC) chimes in...

I notice no difference between them trying to play our fight song and them trying to play their own.

Go practice. And while you're at it, smack the trumpet that was about 20 cents sharp last week during the Illinois game and teach him how to use a tuner. Better yet, teach him to use his EARS. That may be beyond his skill range, however...

amazing

the first thing the band thinks about doing is playing MICHIGAN'S fight song.

case and point.

CUE Animotion as performed by the tOSU fans:
You are an obsession
I cannot sleep
I am a possession
Unopened at your feet
There is no balance
No equality
Be still
I will not accept defeat

I will have you
Yes I will have you
I will find a way and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterfly
I will collect you and capture you

You are an obsession
You're my obsession
Who do you want me to be
To make you sleep with me
You are an obsession
You're my obsession
Who do you want me to be
To make you sleep with me

WE DON'T WANT NO STINKIN' BUCKEYE TAIL UNLESS IT'S ON A GAME RACK

If they didn't give a damn about us, why would they memorize our fight song and play it when we're not playing each other? You can't have it both ways.

I'm glad the MMB would never do this. See, we like our team. OSU never seems to care about theirs.

"our band would never do this"????

I can't believe anyone honestly believes their marching band's "too classy" for something like this. College marching bands are that, College marching bands, full of 20 something kids who get to act like they're 12 again.

Trust me when I say this, behind closed doors, even our most respected groups are downright rude and crude.

One guy complains the Band doesn't know the UM fight song well enough, one complains they are obsessed enough to memorize it...

Guess what. The entire country was watching the biggest upset in college football history. Most teams were warming up on equal caliber nobodies, blowing them out, bored and watching UM go down in flames. Our band played your fight song to clown you, get over yourselves. App. State/Michigan was just about the only interesting game on that day. Maybe you didn't see Woodson and co. on Big-10 tonight talking about their obsession. Guess what, they weren't talking about MSU or Minnesota. It's a freaking rivalry so we're told. Do Alabama fans whine about how much Auburn cares about the Iron Bowl? I guess the representation of UM fans as uppity holier than thou A-holes in the HBO special was completely off base?... right.

I didn't say "too classy." Don't put words in my mouth. I only said the MMB would never do that.

(Obvious response: "Yeah, because the Buckeyes would never lose to a I-AA team.")

"Go Practice"??? Let's start the war about which band has better musicians, that sounds like a fun debate.

Look at it this way, the networks are notoriously bad for placing the microphones in poor places for these bands (i.e. the Tennessee flutes a couple weeks ago). I urge you to find someone that sounds good in a marching band setting when their team just scored a touchdown.

Jeremy said...

pyle is correct. TV crews seem to have no idea how to mic a band. And in the unlikely event they show one on the field, they never fail to leave the field microphones live, capturing the awful imbalance from two feet away.

There is one reason the band has that song memorized, and that is because they memorize the fight song of each school the Buckeyes play in a given season. It's a traditional part of their pregame show. After the band has marched the length of the field to the "Buckeye Battle Cry" the annoncer will say "OSU welcomes the (insert mascot name) from (insert school) and then the band plays the opposing schools's fight song and sometimes forms their logo or acronym. In fact, for those of you who will be at the game on Saturday, look for the OSU band to make a block "M".

and also, it takes very little effort to memorize UM's fight song, because it's very easy to play

I remember the days when they used to show the Marching Bands at Halftime. Now we have to listen Bobby Bowden's retarded son (or his replacement) prattle on about how great the SEC really is.

As for that being the biggest upset in college history...I'm not so sure.

For the record, Ohio Guy, all Big Ten bands play each others' fight songs in pregame. It is a wonderful tradition; it is not unique to OSU.

"For the record, Ohio Guy, all Big Ten bands play each others' fight songs in pregame."
Completely untrue! The Purdue band didn't play the Ohio State fight song in Ross-Aide at all. The only time any Ohio State songs were heard was at tailgates.

ohio_guy said...

well Jeremy, since you knew about the pregame tradition thing, why did you ask the following question above:

"If they didn't give a damn about us, why would they memorize our fight song"

Jeremy said...

Because you sing "the old gray mare" with the "we don't give a damn" lyrics, which makes me wonder, if you really didn't give a damn, why would you sing a whole song about it? It was a rhetorical extension of that. Thanks for taking it completely literally.

Jeremy said...

J-

Huh. I thought it was a conference-wide thing. That's a damn shame that they don't. I hope OSU played Hail Purdue anyway.

Didn't you know that the OSU band was trying to show support for Michigan after such a devastating loss. This was my last game in the OSUMB and after a rather "blah" game against Youngstown State, it made my day to stand under the stadium and watch Michigan lose to ASU. I will remember that for the rest of my life.
