BREAKING NEWS: CARR TO RETIRE AFTER THE SEASON
According to Brian at MGOBlog, Lloyd Carr will announce his retirement next week after this Saturday's game with the Buckeyes.

did you REALLY think we lost to ASU! no! it was just a ploy by the under classmen to get a new coach for next year.
i feel another earle bruce send off coming....
Lloyd has led a turnaround from what could have been a total throwaway season. If it's true, I say thanks to Lloyd for some very good years at Michigan.
A classy coach of a classy team. If this is true he will be missed by the B10 community.

Why let this slip a week before the game with OSU? I could understand doing it before bowl seasopn/pracrice gets going with recruiting and all, but why now?
i'm sure they're hoping it will inspire the team. although i also thought bo's passing would have inspired the team to a win last year.

Carr seems like a decent guy.
I also hate to see him go because I wonder if/fear that Michigan has another gear, ie Tressel and the Buckeyes.
Carr was awesome for us. I hope he is happy in retirement. But it shocks me that he would let something like this slip the week of the big game. Why have everyone talking about it, seeing that it will definitely distract the team? While is disagree with the timing, i have to wonder if he did this strategically, as in he wants the department to know BEFORE the result of the big game is known that he is to retire, so that in the wake of a horrible defeat, he isn't fired. Will he be able to choose a successor now?

On top of this making it harder to beat UM in the future, this will give the UM players motivation to send LLoyd out on top.
Lloyd Carr let this slip because he wants to get the Osborne effect in the polls....
My goodness, I wasn't expeting that. I do agree, the "slip" is certainly to inspire (and I hope to hell it works). I like Carr for many reasons. He is a wonderful human being. He is a great coach and proved that with the 8 straight wins this year. I will wish him all of the best. I do think that it is time for Michigan Football to have some new blood. I just am not sure that Martin has the balls to get us that. I hope that I am wrong.
I'm a Buckeye fan who admires Lloyd's overall body of work, even though it generated considerable pain at the end of so many otherwise promising years. He rescued a top-notch program from potential embarassment (at the hands of a drunken OSU alum) and molded an organization that developed men of character who won with class and regularity.
I also LOVED his halftime interviews (or his genuine response to BS questions), and it is my hope that during the Rose Bowl halftime interview,(I've known that we're going to lose next week since last January 2nd) he invites the sideline reporter to, in Braveheart meets A Few Good Men fashion to "march to the 50 yard line, disrobe, and kiss your own ass, because I've never felt the need to defend my decisions to a vapid twat that doesn't understand the first thing about College Football, and I won't start now."

The advantage of announcing now is clear.
1) Motivator for Saturday's game
2) Make Carr the story not the kids
3) Positive impact on recruiting because of the transparency
4) Head off any whisperings about Bill Martin sniffing around at other programs etc
5) Avoid controversy/Fire Lloyd hysteria
You gotta love the Coach for all of the above moving forward and ALL that he has meant to the program up until now.

I had the pleasure of meeting coach Carr before the Illinois game. We were staying at the same hotel as the team. The morning before the game he was in the lobby with a few media folks and I just walked up and introduced myself. He was humble and thanked me for my support of the team. He's a good man and a good coach. I will miss him as our head coach, despite the recent results versus those nuts.
He's 6-6 now, so I guess this is for the all-time winning record for him. Go Blue!!!
Bring on Miles. Rumor is that his wife was looking for houses in Ann Arbor today.
Oh so sorry to hear about Lloyd's retirement announcement. However, it does save the the trouble of firing him after the loss to tOSU.

I noticed that you claimed "Law" as your industry. As a fellow OSU fan who found your commentary subpar, do you claim that industry as: "Defendant" or "Bailiff"?
Wondering how the Miles thing will play out: Michigan-only buyout, friction with Carr and Coleman, etc.? Will he leave the meat grinder of LSU for Maize and Bluer pastures???
Personally, I'm gonna wait a week. Depending on Saturday, it's either gonna be "thanks for the memories" or "about f'ng time". Yeah. I'm still a tad bitter.
I'm sure Tressel will find it's tougher to own a Les Miles than it is to own a Lloyd Carr... I'm just saying.
It's definetely time...but yet bittersweet! He is a great man and he has done a great job with the program, but it is time to move on (and up)!

Lloyd deserves to go out a winner - not to mention Hart, Henne and Long. Play to win - use all your weapons - keep them off balance. Please don't run left, run left then throw the bomb every time. Who's on the short list to take over the program? Miles, Gruden, English, Cameron, Harbaugh (not likely!), Rodriguez, Schiano?

Wasn't Kelly an assistant to Dantonio? Now THAT would be ironic, no?
Kelly hates Dantonio...Dantonio has done nothing but rag on Kelly since he got down here to UC....Kelly has used it all year to motivate his team, and he might win the Big East.
I am almost inclined to want Kelly in AA2 instead of Les Miles, but Les can recruit the South like nobody's business, too bad Kelly wouldn't come as O-Coordinator.
Michigan Alum '04 here, but went to high school on the west side of the state. Numerous high school friends went to (all at once MSU fans...) Grand Valley State University, and I kept hearing about this coach back home and his football team that could do nothing but win, and then win some more. He then spends a so-so 3 years at Central, but now winning again at Cincy. While I'd love for Miles to inject some well-timed vigor into the program and tap that ass of a recruiting base he has developed-- nothing would make me happier than to out-tressel The professor himself, by hiring a small-school proven winner that has the desire and ambition to take his success to the next level. Brian Kelly could fit in quite nicely.
Here's to a steady, respected, and successful coach going out on top, Pat Forde back-pedaling during his weekly monday tribute to all-things-asinine, and to Desmond Howard putting out the best gameday commercial I've seen yet.

Ahh, bless Lloyd. I do think it's time, but it's still extremely sad. I only hope his successor has as much integrity as Lloyd's displayed over his years at Michigan.
Here's to a great Michigan Man who will be greatly missed. Give 'em hell Saturday, Lloyd.
Wow, wow, wow. Odd feeling. Lloyd Carr is only the 3rd Michigan coach in my lifetime. Here's hoping the next coach (Miles) can push Michigan in the direction most of us would like to see. I think there is a vast majority of coaches in 1A (FBS) who would jump at the chance to coach in Ann Arbor.
Truth be told, I can't wait to read Lloyd's book whenever it comes out. The humble pie eating man better write a book.
Wolf - I wouldn't say Kelly's tenure at CMU was "so-so". He brought that program from the DeBord disaster to a MAC championship in little time. This year he's made Cinci a contender for the Big East championship. The guy is a hell of a coach.
Thank GOODNESS. it's 4 years too late, but finally one of the top programs in the country can finally get a great, not good Llyod, coach.
Let's hope it's someone worth a damn and not a 'Michigan Man.' Time to come into the 21st Century and stop living in the past.

Don't know- I've only ever heard good things about how Lloyd treats people and have a friend who played for Kelly at Central- said if you weren't a star he'd walk right past you and not acknowledge your existence. This is the last guy i'd expect to throw something like that out. Second hand info, but I've known the guy for years and trust what he says. Based on that I'm not a Kelly guy, but I'd need to do more research.
As a fairly consistent critic of Carr's, I am happy to see the news. I do think it's time, but I will also give Lloyd props for how the team's performed in the wake of its early season failings. To me, it was unexpected and impressive.
P.S. Enough with the rush to annoint Miles as the heir-apparent. Let's shed the Michigan-goggles for once and take an honest look around.
Best of luck to Lloyd in his retirement.
Personally I FEAR Les Miles. The way he runs an offense will probably revolutionize the B10.
I see Michigan playing for - and winning - several national championships under Les.
