According to the USC site, "Smelley, a 6-2, 216-pound redshirt freshman made his just second career start on Saturday and led the Gamecocks to a 38-21 win over Mississippi State. While celebrating his 21st birthday, Smelley completed 19-of-37 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns, all career highs."
And since his selection, the most popular t-shirt on campus is this one...

Uh, I have one question though: a 21 year old freshman? Seriously?

Maybe he did a tour in the Army, got his GI Bill, honorably discharged, and enrolled as USC? That may explain his age.

Ohio State's kicker, Ryan Pretorius, is a 28 yr old Junior. I think he came here late in life from South Africa after working with former NFL kicker and fellow South African Gary Anderson
on a similar note regarding players with funny names - i saw a volleyball player on espn tonight (probably the ocho) named Destinee Hooker....
HA... as an aside, Harry Colon, former Detroit Lions DB, will always be my fave messed up name.
I knew a horse race jockey that was named Harry Peter... It was childishly funny, but I laughed each time.
You can't top former Detroit Tiger Rusty Kuntz in the name category. He was on the 1984 World Series winning team.
Hey Yost. I think I heard the announcer last night at the Rice game say that their true freshman QB is 23 years old!!!! WTF?
da braylon... the player from Rice played minor league baseball for four years aftr high school. When the baseball gig didn't work out, he decided to go to college.
Did you see the highlights from that game? He lined up at TE, DE, QB, and WR last night.
The Rice QB-RB-TE-WR-DE super-every-man was a minor league baseball player who decided to switch to football, which explains his age.
You guys heard about the guy who went back to college and got on the football team right? He was a grandfather! He was also a trainer in his life, so he was in great shape. But he had said that was one of his biggest regrets in life, something about not getting to play football in college or something. Anyway, anything is possible!
The WR from South Carolina was, I believe 37. Retired army that used his GI Bill. Great story.
Dick Trickle
I think he went to a pre-kindergarden. So he is a year behind everyone.
We always liked the name Olitide Ogunfiditimi, a former Arizona LB or DL. As for aged players, I always thought your freshman year had to commence within five years of HS graduation. could be wrong.
for old time Detroiters....nothing tops Dexter Bussey!
My mom used to ride the Dexter Bus to and from grade school
I'm just so pleased that any of you were watching the Rice game. Up 31-7 going into the 4th quarter? Win 31-29. I just knew they were going to overtime and they were going to blow all of that big lead. Such is the life of a Rice Owl fan...
There was also a 40-something fella who played hockey while he was in grad school... I forget where but it was some small liberal arts school in New England. There's hope for me yet! Although, I hope that doesn't turn me into that creepy old guy hanging around campus and staring at coeds.
Yeah, I am the creepy old lady hanging around campus staring at young studs....hee hee. 46 year old in doctoral school at the UofM......but seriously, these cute little things remind me of my sons (who are in college too), that is just......ewwwwww....
Good for you Katie!!! What are you studying? How much further to go?
Thanks Mgoblue93 :o) I am in the nursing program. The number one best perk of being a student.......season tickets!!!!! Depending on my research, I am planning on 4-5 years to complete my degree. This is my first year.
THE MAYOR OF FORT WAYNE, INDIANA BACK IN THE LATE 40'S-EARLY 50'S WAS "HARRY W. BAALS"!!!
