MZone to Boycott NCAA PC Police

Ok, something has been bugging me since long before Michigan lost to a... Football Sub Championship Lesser Division Smaller Stadium Whatever-The-Hell-They're-Now-Called School and I need to get it off my chest.

In case you missed it, starting last season, the NCAA began phasing out the classification names "1-A" - where Michigan, Florida, USC and the like reside - and "1-AA" - which includes teams like Appalachian State, Furman, Montana and their ilk who have that 16-team playoff at the end of their season which nobody watches. Now, the Division Formerly Known As 1-A is supposed to be called the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) while 1-AA is to be referred to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

FCS, FBS? Sounds like a bunch of BS and all I have to say is WTF?

Can somebody please explain what was so terribly wrong with the simple and longstanding 1-A and 1-AA classifications? Is it an attempt to be "PC" when referring to schools with, shall we say, "smaller stadiums" if you know what I mean? Like "those schools" such as Youngstown State and "their kind" were offended by the second "A" so the NCAA threw the word "Championship" in the division classification name to appease these schools I used to make fun of until Michigan lost to one...smaller schools that gladly accept Miami recruits after their third felony arrests...fine institutions of higher learning who at least know how to crown their national champion.

Seriously, this renaming idea is so unnecessary and unsupported by the fans, I almost thought Jim Delaney must have come up with it. And we here at the MZone aren't going to stand for it.

As such, we're calling for a boycott of the new FCS and FBS names. We are only going to refer to team divisions by their OG classifications of 1-AA and 1-A on this site and we urge other bloggers across America to do the same.

Fight the Power! Stop the NCAA PC police!

Yea, I'm going to stick with I-A and I-AA too. Political correctness is gay.

I totally agree, Yost.

If the NCAA is going to be all PC, then why haven't they renamed Division II and Division III? What the heck would the call them anyway? Mostly Private Semi-Scholarship Division and Total Non-Scholarship Division? This is getting absurd.

I prefer Pop Warner College League and Youth Football College League, but that's just me.

Amen Yost!

As an alum of a former Div. I-AA school (WKU, 2002 champs btw), I just can't bring myself to say FCS. Although it at least it sounds better than FBS.

"There's no BS in our FCS!"

PC IS absurd. Almost without exception...

"their ilk who have that 16-team playoff at the end of their season which nobody watches." Ever since they started posting lines for these games, I've been more interested. I may even watch one.

THANK YOU YOST FOR BRINING THIS TO THE FOREFRONT!!! I, too, have been sickened by the 'PCness' of this absurd change. Unfortunately, the major media outlets have started to use the new name for I-AA, which means that it won't be long before it catches on. What the hell was wrong with I-AA??? Absolutley nothing. I spend a lot of time in Montana, and you would never think that they thought of themselves as less....they are competetive as hell. It's just the PC Po' Po' forcing themselves into the world of sports.....give me a freaking break.

I think that change has been boycotted since the day it was instituted. I've rarely seen anybody use the FCS and FBS thing and have seen many people just stick with I-A and I-AA because that's the way it has always been and people know what you are talking about.

I don't think this has anything to do with PC. Doesn't this have to do with the fact that teams are no longer considered 1-AA or 1-A based on size?
1-AA and 1-A status used to be determined by the number of enrolled students but now it's not so they changed the names. I mean, if you want to say 1-AA, I'm sure nobody will be offended, go ahead. I just don't see what people are ranting about.

I think we should call 1-AA schools, "The Differently Abled Venues," "Alternative, Secondarily-Recognized Fora," or "Size & Budget Challenged" so that we don't hurt their self-esteem.

I'm glad that you're taking a stand. This FCS, FBS bullcrap needs to stop. I mean what does Football Championship Subdivision even mean? I-A isn't afraid to name a championship winner, even if it is one that is highly contested and controversial. For goodness sakes, Myles Brand gets more full of it every year.

I concur; there was no real reason for the switch. I'm with you on this one.
