Michigan vs. Appalachian State - Open Thread

With the early start to the game, we thought we'd get an early start on the Open Thread. Besides, we're pretty damn excited for the season, even if we can't see the game (and by "we" I mean "me." Yost has DirecTV, the bastard).

Things to ponder before (or even during) Michigan's first foray into I-AA football:

* AppState is at least a top to mid-level MAC team. Do they have a chance against the Wolverines?

* Based on AppState being at least decent, what would it take for you to be impressed/disappointed with Michigan today?

* For those without DirectTV, how are you going to follow the game?

* Which other games will hold your interest, and who's primed to be an upset victim in Week 1?

All right, enough questions. Let's kick some Mountaineer ass.

GO BLUE!

I know this isn't supposed to be much of a contest, but just for kicks, what sort of self-destruction might you entertain should the Wolverines stumble and "shudder" give this game away.

I only ask because the comments on this blog keep me in stitches and I need a good laugh.

Tonite on the Jimmy Kimmel show, there was a sketch piece of comedy with Jimmy's uncle and Guillermo talking about going back to college.

And what was the background music for the sketch? Why only the greatest fight song in the land... Jimmy Kimmel played "The Victors"!!!

Go Blue...

The best thing about living out West? Rolling out of bed and turning on the game just in time to see the opening kickoff!

GO BLUE!!!

From my point of view, this is a no-win game. Either we thrash them and look like bullies (and still don't defy expectations), or the game is close and we're embarrassed. Or we lose, in which case we all have to kill ourselves.

At least there will be some good looking women in Ann Arbor for a change...

Ann Arbor would be like sunrise on Jonestown. Kool-Aid, anyone?

When I have not been able to see a game I have used the new fangled Internets that Coach Bobby Bowden has talked so much about to listen to the broadcast. I did this to listen to the local language Spanish broadcast of the USA Chivas - LA Galaxy soccer game or the Cal at New Mexico State football game that was broadcast in Navajo.

So i'm watching BTN, seeing all these 'this is big ten country' commercials. Could they be any worse? I mean seriously?? They're horrible!!

Joshua said...

Wasn't looking forward to the BTN, but the coverage is good so far. It's nice being able to flip over to the Penn St or OSU games during commercials, and the announcers aren't horrible like i expected.

And HELLO Charissa Thompson. That's one sideline reporter who's hot as all crazy hell.

Mike said...

Not too thrilled about seeing a tie score on Gamecast in the 2nd quarter...

Not only do i not get the Big Ten Network in NYC, but now I looked up Charissa Thompson, and holy hell i'm jealous that cablevision sucks

Mike... ASU is taking it to Michigan. They are faster than Michigan at just about every position.

You'll be even more pissed to see a 14 point deficit on gamecast at halftime.

I imagine the rest of the coaches are looking at this game and salivating -- spread offense kills Michigan -- we saw it with tOSU, in the Rose Bowl and now with ASU.

srudoff said...

how about a 14 pt deficit before the half then?

amazing

sure you guys will win but DAMN this is awesome

Andy said...

I am not sure we will ever stop them with our D.

Pathetic

whetstonebuck said...

I think I hear all the DumpLloyd.coms gearing up.

It will have to be a wild second half and even then spinning the PR after the game will be a tough sell.

Stephen said...

down 11..... good job Blue!

(glad I can't watch this game)

IamCris said...

What's more troublesome to me than the halftime score is the announcer on the BTN. I swear to Christ and all things sacred that he is an ASU grad. Aside from that, enjoy the second half, i'm not certain any of you with Comcast would want to watch this disection of Michigan anyways. Yep, after 10 am on the west coast... time to get drunk. Oh yeah, Go Blue!!! I'm calling it right here, second half comeback for the ages and an 3 OT win on a failed 2pt conversion by ASU.

Footnote to my last post*

*DVD of game synced to radio broadcast for sale next year.

If by the grace of God Himself we win this game, then go on to win every game this season, this will be Michigan's defining game. No matter what we do from here on in - trash talk will all start with the words "Appy State".

My God this will be a long season.

Stephen said...

well.... could be down by 4...

Seems that English crawled up the DBs asses...

AD said...

Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is SOOOOO Funny!

I guess App St. is turning your world upside down huh?

Ha Ha!!!!!

Stephen said...

ok... I meant 8 down...

Gotta love this offense that is supposed to be able to put up 30+ points a game....

whetstonebuck said...

ad,

You're in someone else's house. A little class would go a long way.

JD said...

If "Hot Hot Hot" University pulls off the upset, would they be eligible for Top 25 votes.

Joshua said...

Class? I'm guessing he must be a Buckeye, and we all know how much of that they have. Anyone who doubts this should check out the current Michigan Stadium entry at Wikipedia- some jackass editied it to start the history section with "Fuck Michigan".

And wtf is the deal with our inability to defend against the spread offense? Can someone please teach the coaching staff the meaning of "adjustment"?

dtw2phx said...

What the FUCK is going on back there???? JC!!! (I hate having to catch this game on the web.) God this blows.

Jim said...

This is brutal. Who's watching this? Are they better than we thought or are we that much worse? #5 was always a little high, but come on...

Dave said...

I think we all owe a big thanks to Jim Delany and the BTN for not letting us see this game. THANK YOU!!!

couldn't you guys find a bar that has directtv?

buckidrummer said...

To add insult to injury, after the YSU/OSU game, btn is cutting all of columbus to the UM game. I apologize in advance for what you might see on this board at that point

dtw2phx said...

Dave - AMEN!!! (lol)

Joshua - Yeah, I think the BW3s down the road has it on, but I wasn't about to break ass to get down there by 9am (NOW I'm glad I didn't waste any energy to!) :-) (God I can't wait until we're only 2-hours 'apart'!!! lol)

Jim said...

The ESPN Gamecast sucks. I checked back and it says it's 35-34 Michigan...but it's not...I don't think. Did I say this thing sucks?

Jim said...

Mark May just said that even if Michigan holds on to win, they shouldn't be a top 20 team. This is an embarassing showing, but that's just Cowherd-level provocation.

Fire Lloyd Carr

dtw2phx said...

I'm supposed to come home for the Minnesota game -- anyone want my tickets??!!? (lol) JC!! What a fuckin joke!

I think I'm gonna go throw up now.

MGoBlue93 said...

I don't disagree with Mark May one bit. Michigan shouldn't be ranked on Monday period. Never before has a 1-AA team beat a ranked 1-A team on the road... EVER! Every other game was pretty much a blow out today.

Congrats to ASU. Well Done.

Fire Carr... hire Les Miles.

Don't know what's up w/the double post. You know, if we were gonna lose, couldn't they have not completed that last pass that gave us a bit of hope?

Jim said...

I know someone will explain how none of this is lloyd's fault, but what are we supposed to think? Are we really no better than a really good 1-AA team, or did lloyd's team show up unprepared? unmotivated? Special teams, anyone? When does lloyd finally share in the blame?

I don't like to think of myself as a lloyd-basher, but there has been so much gut-wrenching disappointment in recent years after the tease of so much talent. I just need to see a change. Personally.

BigJim61 said...

I am a Saluki (SIU, another I-AA) and am so proud of what App State was able to do. In the past few years there have been some upsets of teams like Northwestern or Colorado by fellow I-AA schools, but this is the biggest one yet~ just hope this doesn't mean the "big schools" will stop scheduling the "little guys". Go mountaineers!

* AppState is at least a top to mid-level MAC team. Do they have a chance against the Wolverines?

uh... yeah. once again, the wolverines are to sloooooow on defense, and lack the balls to stretch the defense out with the occasional long ball.

* Based on AppState being at least decent, what would it take for you to be impressed/disappointed with Michigan today?

impressed: win by 30
disappointed: anything else

* For those without DirectTV, how are you going to follow the game?

go to a bar; drink myself into a coma

* Which other games will hold your interest, and who's primed to be an upset victim in Week 1?

none - michigan has scared any potential upset victim into playing well today.

Joshua..
spread offense just killed us out there..I really didn't think we could ever hope to reload the defense the way some thought. last years team was a dream that just fell short, teams like that only come around once a decade at most. now some will say it should have been Lloyd's swan song..maybe it should have been.

Smitty said...

Why on earth would Les Miles move to Michigan or anyone else for that matter?

Boze said...

This may have been the best game I ever saw...the only contest would be sitting in the stands at Kinnick a couple years ago watching all the sad-faced Ohio State fans shaking their heads as they got completely shellacked. But Michigan losing at home to a 1AA team? You can't hardly help feeling there might be a God. And if there is, his message was obviously: "I hate Michigan."

So even though Q1GO said "Or we lose, in which case we all have to kill ourselves", I'd suggest not doing so at least until you have atoned for the sin of rooting for the Blue.

Atonement for some of nasty comments about our Caitlin Upton too… You think our football is tough try a tango or two with the women in these parts… That’s Guaranteed to provide the fear of God for the curious doubt. As far as the comments concerning the dear Strom Thrumond, I’m sure that God has a gracious and forgiving heart, and as the longest serving Senator since the time of Cicero, I’m sure he’ll provide absolution for your multiple sins, failing penance you can use my Barney gun… Cause its only got one bullet which I’m sure I could find at least one decent Yankee to waste it upon. The rest of you can just stand in line and hammer each other to death with the butt. An asinine way to go, I know, but proper penitence does require a poetic justice factor… Death by ass-by-ass nation, should cover a multitude of sins.

Or you might consider just sending out free copies of “The Greatest Upset in College Football History” The special gift set edition (you know the one with the complimentary Bullet included for Big Blue Fans that one might invite over) DVD with the radio commentary back track plz, as a small measure of atonement.

Really thanks for the memories.
Go ASU!
