Michigan - Appalachian State - Post-Game

UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE!

UPDATE: As you may or may not have noticed, Benny is the one that put up this post-game post. I was too stunned to even walk to my computer.

So much to talk about, I don't know where to begin. Thus, I'm going to go look for a very high ledge collect my thoughts and write something tonight for tomorrow. I usually don't post on Sundays but, like a BREAKING NEWS bulletin, things need to be said.

Finally, while we don't mind comments criticizing the team after a loss like this - even from our rivals (it's deserved), all dick comments just to be a dick will be deleted.

Wow. So, umm, yeah. Bad omen, eh?

Roll Tide. Hopefully we can beat our I-AA opponent... :: Snickers ::

UM is a division II school at best. I heard OSU was going to start the Ohio High School football champions this year against UM, to give Lloyd at least a chance...if it makes it to the OSU game. Better watch out for the directional Michigan schools this year too, I hear they are I-A schools

Kraut said...

I'm not sure I will watch another Michigan game this year. How pathetic was that?

I don't think the coaches could have had them any less prepared for that game. And who was worse ... the offense, the defense, or getting two FG attempts blocked?

nopride said...

Everyone's going to call for Lloyd's head....the AD should never have scheduled this game. Even a win isn't a win.
The athletic director eats this one. For scheduling this game and for keeping Carr around this long.

ChicagoWolverine said...

How do you miss 2 field goals and botch 2 2-point conversions like that. WOW. Do you let English take over as Coach now?

Any chance they got some of Bo's DNA locked away in the biology department so they can clone us a new coach?

Alex said...

Oh man, and I was cheering for the Wolves to come through. Still no "highlights" on tWWL. Each year I hope Michigan wins all their games except the last one. This isn't great for the Big Ten by any stretch, esp. after last years bowl game performance.

Go Bucks...

(Buckidrummer - Thank you!! Thanks for reppin' the minority!) ;-)

Well it's official --- Lloyd is NOW our Cooper.

Ugh, I think I have to go puke some more........

Never been so shocked & disappointed! Carr needs to take the admirable route and fall on his own sword! Such high expectations, with minimal results.

Although I wish I could, I can't blame OSU fans for posting their "ha-ha" on this site. Do your worst TOSU..this is the most pathetic loss in the history of U-M football and we have earned a verbal beatdown.

Joshua said...

We perennially underachieve. Period. You can't tell me that every 5 star player we recruit lacks a killer instinct. Coaching is the only answer. Off to watch the presser.

I'm seriously not sure I'll be able to convince myself to watch the rest of their games this year ... let alone go to a couple. Someone please convince Lloyd he needs to leave.

Oh, has anyone figured out why Hart was out of the game for so long?

Jeff said...

I have never been embarrassed to be associated with the Unversity of Michigan... until today.

Way to go Coach Carr and the rest of the staff.

Jeff said...

You can look back at this game and identify at least 8 times in which Michigan could have executed and protected a win.
0-8

Joshua said...

No questions for Hart as to why he was out during the press conference. He was weirdly upbeat.

Jake Long looked like he married Giselle only to wake up one day and discover she's really a dude.

Seriously- did that really just fucking happen?

MarkMack said...

Is anyone really surprised by this? I mean really how long have have we known that carr just doesnt have what it takes. Put carr at any other University over the past 10 years and I assure you his record isnt even close to what it is at Michicant. This is terrible and embarrassing. What a joke. I hereby announce i will not watch another UM game until carr is gone. Congrats to ASU. YOU are by far a better team and deserve all the attention in the world.

Jason said...

Congratulations guys. Just keep patting yourselves on your backs because of UM's academic credentials. That should take some of the sting away.

Tim said...

I will attempt to find the silver lining in this cloud. I believe OSU had a 6-6 season before they hired Tressel. I don't know if Tressel had any ties with OSU, but we need to clean house. We may have to endure a .500 season or under then totally clean house. I don't think English is the next head coach. How many years has it been now that a "mobile" qb runs through our defense like a hot knife through butter? That was his defense that gave up 34 points to App St. It was his defense that USC smacked around and OSU out ran. It was his defense that allowed App st. to drive the length of the field for the winning 26 yard fg.

No. A new couch with no Michigan ties.

We may lose more than we win this year, but in the end clean house.

Ugh. I haven't felt this bad...well honestly since the Colorado loss in the Big House.

Pat Sprinkle said...

As an Ohio State fan I should be thrilled, but I'm not. This is an awful day for Big 10 Football. I hope Michigan marches through Oregon and Notre Dame this season. The Big 10 Football Reputation (combine this with bowl season) is near an all time low. Hopefully, Michigan can rebound! See You Novemeber 17th

MarkMack said...

bye bye carr

Joshua said...

Lloyd: "We were not a well prepared football team. That is my job. I take full responsibility."

No shit sherlock.

Jerry McGuire said...

As a die-hard Michigan fan, I can honestly say this is the BEST thing that could have transpired for the long-term success of our team. College football has changed since 1997...Carr has not. Same story, different year.

I feel for Hart, Long, Henne and the rest of this team. Maybe the AD will smell the Folgers (or feel the massive slap in the face we got today) and realize that blue chippers want to play today's college football...not yesterday's. We are not going to get the 5 star recruits to leave the south to play Carr's brand of football. Let's hope that this is the straw that broke the camel's back and we get a Head Coach that will prepare the team week in and week out to play today's brand of college football.

Rocket1124 said...

Losing is what we deserve for even scheduling a 1-AA team. Michigan couldn't even do that part right either. If you want an alleged "cupcake" game - go out and get a team that can barely put on their uniforms, not a team that could convincingly beat at least one other team ::coughEasternMichigancough:: on your schedule.

Crock said...

ouch. This hurts.

But, I am a Michigan fan and will continue to watch Michigan games, and cheer for Michgian. A true fan does not give up on their team.

I do hope some coaching changes come as a result of this loss.

Congrats to ASU - they earned this win.

whetstonebuck said...

Damn! That's going to leave a mark.

I'm with Tim on the English evaluation. I don't think he has the stuff to take over as Head Coach.

unbelievable said...

FIRE Bill Martin and Lloyd.

Hire a dynamic coach with no Michigan ties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jerry McGuire said...

Carr's press conference seals the deal for me. He needs to be replaced.

No emotion one way or the other. Monotone delivery. Quotes that are too obvious...my 6 year old son was saying "wow, the white team is faster than our team papa" in the first half. Wow.

For all of the academic "prowess" in Ann Arbor, how can we overlook this stuff year after year? Maybe we should hire Matt Millen as our new AD and he can...wait, that hasn't worked either.

That said, I still dress in Maize and Blue and root for the Lions. And dream...alot.

C said...

I fucking hate you Lloyd Carr. I am so disappointed in myself, what with allowing my animosity towards you to lull last season. I wish you nothing but ill will.

I cried at Bo's passing; it will not be so for you.

Fuck you Lloyd. Retire, be fired, I don't care. Leave.

P.S.: We made the drudgereport. I hope your wife serves you with divorce papers tomorrow Lloyd. You are an embarrassment.

Nitric Oxide said...

As an OSU fan as pleased as I might be right now, its a sad day for Big 10. Not after the two horrible bowl games last year.

Is Appy State that good?

Jeff said...

After every tough loss, there's the requisite calls for the coaches head. In the many years of these calls, this is the first time I feel in agreement...a totally unprepared team.

michiganwolves51 said...

amazing. i couldn't even watch the game on tv so I've been sitting on my computer for 3 hours clicking refresh and getting updates. this just leaves such a sour feeling knowing that we have no shot at a national title with the talent that came back this year. i just hope that this loss re-refocuses the team and the come out strong. this team can definitely win the remainder of their games and get a big ten championship. but this loss still SUCKS.

Jerry McGuire said...

For those of you that did not have to sit through the game today...

App State is THAT good. Michigan would have a hard time beating them on any field 6 out of 10 times. TEAM speed...they have it, we have a little. SPEEDY corners...they have it, we have Morgan "Rent." Yes, other teams "rent" him every week...can't wait for him to be gone. A MOBILE QB...do I have to spell this out for anyone?

App State would give alot of Div I teams an L this year. The score was closer than the game...seriously. A true freshman dropped a sure TD in the endzone and they missed a FG, too.

On a related note...why did we go for 2 the first time? Kick the point to go down 4. Hart scores, kick that point, go up 3. Then, the App St. FG that put them up 2 would have tied the game instead. Coaching blunder? I could go on and on and on...

Greg said...

I'm a Penn State fan, so I should be happy, but I'm not. This is just awful for the Big Ten. This is why you don't schedule Div. 1-AA teams, because you never know what you're going to get with them. Schedule a crappy Div. 1-A team (like Florida International!) instead. I did think Michigan was a bit overrated, but this is simply amazing. They can't be ranked, can they, after this? And Carr can't survive this, can he? I'm a bit worried now because they're going to be pissed on 22 September when Penn State goes to the Big House.

I'm happy to see such a crazy upset, but I would have rather seen MSU beat LSU or something like that. The Big Ten doesn't need this.

nitz said...

Now I have to root for Appalachian State to win the national championship.

TitleIX said...

Here's the deal. Congratulations to App State as they were well prepared, well coached, and out performed our Michigan team in ALL phases of the game. PERIOD.
App State did us a favor, they have exposed what all of us have known but have been in denial about for ages----this coaching staff blows. These kids were completely unprepared. Henne overthrew wide open receivers, rushed his throws, panicked in certain situations, and generally looked lost. And seemed to be using last years same lame ass plays. Hart did something to piss off the coaching staff and was pulled. How the fuck does the kicking team allow TWO blocked field goals??? seriously.
4 more loses coming for this team--be forewarned.

And to all you tOSU trolls who have come over here to gloat...keep your lame shiteous comments to yourself, ok? We lost, we know it. I am very proud of how Michigan fans acted towards the App State fans. Every single one of their fans was greeted with "congratulations", "nice job", "enjoy your time here" by everyone I walked past today. Not one 'fuck you you suck' from Michigan fans and not one "we own you bitches" from their fans. Take a lesson tOSU.

This sucks.
Just like Vince Young.
Just like Kordell Stewart and "the" Colorado game.

It's gonna be a looooong season. The emperor has no clothes.

Nitric Oxide said...

Michigan paid $400,000 to Appy for this game! Wow! A true backfire!

As a Michigan fan, I feel lost. Dazed. I'm willing to accept that ASU was better than we expected, but the *way* we lost makes it even worse. Even if we win the rest of our games, we'd never be picked over any other 1 or even 2-loss team for a Championship game. It feels like a lost season. Over before it began.

On a semi-related note, I always seem to think I've grown out of my UM fanaticism, then a loss like this one just hits me like a truck. It'll be hard to get jacked for a game for a while, I think.

Best prepped/coached/motivated team I've ever seen. App St could have folded in the 4th. They didn't.

As for us? Lloyd has had two- 2003 & 2006 - good seasons in the last 6 years. The other 4 were mediocre to poor- 3+ losses in each of them. Shame on us for thinking this year would be different.
Even Yost has to agree that Lloyd must go. The only bright spot is now that none of this staff will be here this time next year.

Sigh. Long drive back to Cowtown tonight.

No wonder UM always comes up short. Michigan men are always ready to jump off the bridge after one, or god forbid, two losses. Before I get the "proud history" replies to explain this mindset it seems to me that your history, at least for the last few decades, pretty much consists of a few losses a year. If Michigan football players carry the same gene it doesn't surprise me that they choke when a good I-AA spooks them. Too much thinking, not enough playing. OSU may have more mustaches (on the women) and more beer guts (on the men) but they just play and if they lose, they don't jump off the bridge and mentally piss away the rest of the season. They just burn a few more couches and cars than they would have if they had won. They sure as hell don't start firethecoach.com websites. Besides the fact that most of them couldn't get past the domain registry, they don't go that deep. They just take it out on the next team. You pusses all want to run off to counseling and spend the next week or two cursing the team like lives were hanging in the balance. You guys aren't going to the championship game now, but you weren't even if you'd won. Go have a beer. And if it helps, burn a sofa or two. It seems to work in Columbus.

Ulysses said...

I generally agree with the crowd ...

Can't take anything anyway from App State, they were great and genuinely outplayed Michigan for the majority of the game.

The kicking game reminds me of 2002. Special teams could absolutely kill us this year. Bad season when the highlight is your punter.

Henne looked like his 2005 self ... very shakey game. Mike Hart can't do everything on this offense. Also, good god we need a better tight end ...

I have always been a Lloyd defender but this kind of stuff is absolutely killing me.

Bouj said...

Let this be a lesson to all the I-A schools who schedule I-AA schools. IF UM had lost to a WAC team or Vandy or Baylor or some crap I-A team, they could have conceivably recovered. Even Notre Dame won't be completely screwed if GA Tech finishes the job. But UM is DONE. OVER. No need to play the rest of the games.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go pray the Longhorns can stay focused against Arkansas State and not do anything stupid.

Michigan has to drop out of the top 25.

The real question is...will ASU get enough votes to get IN the top 25??? ...is that even possible?? I don't see why not.

How long until we offer Les Miles "Saban money"?

MGoBlue93 said...

You know... to all the MSU and tOSU gloaters in here, it sure is gonna look bad for your programs when Michigan beats them this year.

What will you have to say for yourselves when you your team looses to a team which lost to a 1-AA team?

PJS said...

Your team was outcoached. Two blocked field goals is coaching.

I'm a Minnesota fan and was rooting for the upset. But I understand the anger here, your coaching staff did you no favors.

What a pathetic disgrace. This is a complete reflection of the recruiting of Lloyd Carr and the coaching of Lloyd Carr and his staff. If Carr and his coaches had any pride at all they would all voluntarily resign immediately. If they do not is it clear they are only there for the paychecks and the University should fire Lloyd and his whole staff immediately.I have been a long time fan but as of today that has ended.I hope others see how this program has been run into the ground and do the same.Michigan is no longer as good as a 1-AA school. Thanks Lloyd

* AppState is at least a top to mid-level MAC team. Do they have a chance against the Wolverines?

uh... yeah. once again, the wolverines are to sloooooow on defense, and lack the balls to stretch the defense out with the occasional long ball.

* Based on AppState being at least decent, what would it take for you to be impressed/disappointed with Michigan today?

impressed: win by 30
disappointed: anything else

* For those without DirectTV, how are you going to follow the game?

go to a bar; drink myself into a coma

* Which other games will hold your interest, and who's primed to be an upset victim in Week 1?

none - michigan has scared any potential upset victim into playing well today.

whetstonebuck said...

Okay, on the up side, with the National Championship out of reach don't you think the team will circle the wagons for Henne, Hart & Long in order to get the elusive 2 out of 3: tOSU & a Bowl?

Bad day for everyone in the Big 10

Jim said...

brian,

You obviously have no context. I'd hardly call this just "one loss". For those of us who've been frustrated with lloyd, this is yet another poke in the eye.

Of course, none of this means much in the grand scheme of things, but this frustration you see and these discussions you condescend about take place within the context of college football only. Within that realm, it *is* a big deal.

Thanks for the attempt at a life lesson, though, and go put out your couch.

Lew said...

For those who believe we must support the team as good fans, this is not correct. We have a disease and we need a cure. Our leadership has forfeited any right to consideration- they deserve no 2nd chance and if you asked them I am sure they would admit this.

Carr and his entire senior staff must go for this, and they might as well go right now. The only purpose of the rest of the season is to cure the disease through whatever means we can.

Would Bill Cowher like to have an honorary doctorate in Physics? We just need 1 favor...

2. Chad Henne is a Joke!

My heart is broken. Why the fuck??? Why can't you hit a fucking FG??? IS IT THAT FUCKING HARD?????? WHY GOD?

Ok. I will continue to watch Michigan games, root against the SEC, and everything. The team has to wash itself clean of this horrible loss that will be on the record books FORERVER. They can't let this get to them. They have to be motivated.

Disney better not even think of making a movie about this. We got Boised

Rett said...

I'm glad I didn't go out and get Direct tv to get the Big ten network. The radio was fine for this game.

MGoBlue93 said...

If Michigan hits the field goal, I don't think it matters... 1. Dont forget, ASU left 10 points out on the field. 2. If Michigan pulls out a 1 point win, it keeps the record perfect but that is about it.

ASU had more speed at just about every position and totally took it Michigan today.

Everyone on Michigan's schedule should be looking at the tape of the last three games and putting in some kind of multiple receiver set.

The play calling reminded me of the Rose Bowl.

Carr has always been a good recruiter. What he does with the talent when it gets to A2 is another story... Mallet has got to be thinking, "I left Texas for this"???

Erik said...

Well I just watched the WWL's highlights and that was actually worse than I thought. God in heaven.

Brian said...

Jim,

I do have the context and understand the emotions. It's a horrible loss and as titleix noted in a later post you guys are on the wrong side of history on this one. But I think the context that's been used by some of the posts on this board and others is a bit skewed, in fact it's way off the reservation. When you start talking about firing people after the first game of the season, or financially punishing the school, it gets a bit ridiculous. If UM goes on to win the Big Ten, beat the crap out of OSU, and win a big bowl game, I think you'll all be relatively pleased. I think you should give your 11-3 (over the last two seasons)national championship coach and institution another week.

JonS said...

Never in my 29 years of being a fan of the Maize and Blue have I EVER removed my gear due to embarrassment over my team...

Oh god, this hurts badly. And everyone used to complain about the John Navarre led offense. Where was this so called offensive weapons? I knew the defense was possible shaky, but hell they could not stop a matchbox car. A very bad day for UM football. They must win the Big 10 and a bowl for respectability. And they don't belong in the AP top 25 either.

Lloyd will pay for this...sowheee sowheee!!! oh how it hurts.

Lew said...

Brian,

What do you suppose the odds are of winning the rest of the games on our schedule this year? Do you like our odds against the Big 10 competition? Unfortunately as today shows, our odds of any measure of success are low. Lower than any of us could have dreamt just 24 hours ago.

Doesn't there need to be accountability for performance, some element of a meritocracy in competitive sports? Carr and his staff handle this responsibility with regard to which players make the team and which get playing time (as do all coaches and their staffs). What if Carr and his staff demonstrate totally unacceptable performance?

Darryl said...

The season is still young, and I love my team to death, but this could get ugly.

I am very worried this season could go down hill in a hurry. Oregon looked good in their game. ND did not and PSU looked good.

Could this possible be a losing September for football (1 and 3)?

farris said...

I'm too lazy to read all of these so if someone has mentioned, I'll save you all the trouble and say that its typical tOSU to be illiterate, but I have given this the Simmons treatment:

All losses of this magnitude should be treated as a death in the family.

Lew said...

I just figured out a half decent solution to this- stop the Appalachian State buses before they leave town and invite them to stay- permanently. They obviously have a great coach and staff and some players as well.

The attitude and ability that enabled these guys to go on the road against the #5 team in the country, whip our asses, make history, and take our money is what we need to climb back to the elite levels we once inhabited.

Matt said...

Holy shit! Let's hire their coach!! That's actually brilliant. It worked for OSU to hire a coach from a I-AA powerhouse.

I know it sounds cheesy, but we will overcome. We'll recover. The players have to get together and say something like, "We know we sucked today, but we have to figure out our issues before we end up 1-11."

Brian said...

All for accountability Lew. Guess we just differ on the measuring period. I think what some people are forgetting, or maybe have too much big program snobbery to handle, is that this I-AA team was a damn good team. It's not USC, but it could probably match up against any average I-A team. I didn't see the whole game, but I saw a lot of plays where ASU players were running away from UM players. Outrunning them. This was a good team with good athletes that played a great game. I think they'll bounce back and have a good year and there's a decent chance at the end that all the anger today will be replaced by crying about the big game they'd be in if they hadn't blown the first one. That fear is warranted today. I think you should wait until a couple more weeks before you write off the team's chances against the rest of the schedule.

D.J. said...

All I've ever heard from Wolverine fans is "John Cooper could never win the big game" and "I'm so glad that Florida embarrased tOSU in the Fiesta Bowl." That's all warranted because it's apart of the rivalry. But to try and deflect any of the attention away from a horrific loss and turn this into an "OSU has no class" thing is ridiculous and pathetic.

It's a shame that so many Michigan fans are clueless enough to worry about OSU when they obviously have a huge mess on their own hands. Moronic fans are not exclusive to OSU, and I think this really drives it home for me.

So-called "fans" on both sides lend a bad name to other astute college football diehards, like those who publish on this blog. Any writers who take the time to actually do research on their opponent's university and inform the masses about them show that they have class and respect for the game. I guess that doesn't go for readers who choose to use this forum to trash the Buckeyes.

Jim said...

Brian,

Again, it's not "one loss." This has been ongoing. Big games have equaled big trouble for years.

You're arguing against the outliers. I don't pay any more attention to "...I hope your wife divorces you.." than I do the SEC and tosu trolls. As another pointed out, it wouldn't be fair to the players to fire their coach (or coaches) after one game. But it also wouldn't be fair to the fans, alumni and students to ignore lloyd's failings when the spotlight shines brightest.

Have you *read* the comments on this blog? Several of the worst look like they've been yanked. Hardly surprising to see someone lash out at tacky chumps dropping in to poke at the open wound. I do appreciate the call for civility from whetstonebuck and some others, though.

Jim,

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. This wasn't a big game, at least it wasn't before kick off. It will definitely be ironic if losing this one renders moot victories later in the year in the traditional big games.

Michigan has definitely been on a bad tear the last three games. With the points they've given up, UVA or a like team could have done just as "well." I could be wrong but I still don't think UM will pull the plug on Carr right now. If the losses pile up they'll do it before the season's end, but if he makes it that far Carr's retirement will save them the trouble.

Hi. just curious, what qualifies as being a dick for the sake of being a dick? and what is genuine football commentary? like pointing out that you guys are the first ones ever to be ranked and lose to a non-Div. I-A football team?

will observing the fact that you lost to a non-Div. I-A team get this comment deleted? cause I dont think that's being a dick, I think that is pointing out a fact, such as John Adams was the 2nd president, or water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen.

Is it just me, or have there been almost as many anti-OSU comments by Michigan fans as anti-UM comments by OSU fans,if not more? I think the expressions of condolences are more accurate. This is not a good thing for anyone in the Big Ten.

Slightly amusing, but the badness is far bigger. There but for the grace of God...

You remember that scene from "The 40 Year Old Virgin" where the guy explains that he and his friends went to a donkey show in Mexico, and they were all excited and really enjoyed the show at first, but then they said after a while it was just disturbing "that donkey was really giving it to her, we just felt sorry for her"... that's how I felt watching your game and collective fan implosion that's currently in process. I'm a Buckeye, I really dislike your team, I enjoyed it at first, but man, I'm just starting to feel sorry for her.

Ulysses said...

I think Michigan will wind up winning their next two games against Oregon and ND on emotion alone. However, our team's weaknesses exposed today make the Big 10 schedule seem more daunting.

I am continuously amazed by the number of Buckeye fans who post on this (and other) sites whenever Michigan loses. The same thing probably happens to OSU blogs, I'm guessing. My friends who pull for Ohio State seem to have more class, so I think overall there is some selection bias here and we shouldn't think all OSU fans are dirtbags.

Erik said...

I'm not really clear on how "emotion" defends against spreading the field. It sure didn't work when the players were excited to beat tOSU, it sure didn't work when the players were worked up about getting beaten by tOSU, and it sure didn't work when the players were excited to play for a national championship season.

A few things:

1) UM will go out and beat Oregon next week (to give us hope), then proceed to tank against a weak ND. The Big Ten part of the schedule will go 4-4, with consecutive losses to UW and OSU. This will be followed by the inevitable bowl meltdown.

2) I imagine the bands of all UM's remaining opponents are getting the music to "Hot Hot Hot" ready even as we speak...if the MMB had any sense of humor (and they don't), they would learn it also.

3) All UM alumni have lost all rights to ridicule Lauren Caitlin Upton (Miss South Carolina). We are her bitches now....

4) I would like to personally thank the BTN for not making the game available for viewing in my area. I will live several years longer as a result.

Well, today I learned that no matter how bad the game is, you shouldn't come home and start shooting 6 oz. glasses of tequila. Poor, poor decision and once the drunken haze wears off (and the puking is done) the world still sucks :(

The AFLAC trivia question was "Where is App. State located?" in the Tenn/Cal game. That team from nowhere just beat #5. Thanks for letting these losers join the ransk of BSU.

400K well spent. Unbelievable.

I'm fascinated that you all are surprised that Michigan paid App. State for this game.

Every school does it and I'm sure App. State's not the only team on your schedule that is making money.

Do you really think Temple signs on to play Big Ten teams because it's a learning experience? Every lower level team that plays a "big boy" gets money. This is standard practice, from Top 25 in D1 on down to NAIA.

I cannot wait until next year. If every score from here on out were 63-0 wins for Michigan including a rose bowl trouncing of USC would you REALLY feel good about this season? I wont. I still feel sick in my guts. This is no bueno.

Seriously, today is one of the worst day in sports ever. But Michigan got cocky. I don't know if we really suck that hard or if it was just a one-night stand with suckiness. Michigan may have gotten a mouthful, but it might be able to spit it all out in time to beat OSU. Stop predicting 4-4 Big 10 finish. We can win you bastards.

As you might be able to tell, I got really drunk tonight because I fucking needed it.

They got $400,000 rather than the traditional 60/40 split of the gate. If I recasll correctly that's something Canham started and now how everyone does it.

They pay for their air-fare, hotels, etc. out of that and probnably walk away with around $250-$300,000.

Horribly painful as that was, i think everyone is over-reacting, and the whining and back-biting is counter-productive.

* Michigan players and coaches absolutely WILL NOT overlook anyone from here on out, and take nothing for granted, perhaps/hopefully ever again.

* I don't think any Michigan fan should even be willing to concede that anything- including the NCS game is yet out of the question yet- if the Wolverines rally and come back and play solid and go perfect the rest of the way, and other teams stumble. There are three months toi go, and a lot can and will happen. If they were going to lose one, the first is the to lose, as they have longer to make it up. Now, if they ever play like THAT again, the point will be moot.

* OK, so maybe we were premature to proclaim Ron English a 'genius' and the savior/heir apparent.

* But one way or another, we WILL get better play from our Safeties (isn't that RE's group?), and corners.

* No matter how pissed off we are or no matter how much any of us may dislike Carr, he is not going anywhere until at least the end of the season, and he will step down when he wants to. George Bush has a greater likelihood of being impeached. But such talk can have a serious effect on (Michigan) troop mand recruting morale.

* For that matter, I haven't seen cut-ups yet, but apart from going for two too early, i don't really think this one can be laid at Lloyd's feet, in spite of what he was obliged to get up and say to the press about it being his responsibility. That's waht all head coaches say, regardless of the real cause. This loss wasn't about coaches not calling the right plays or not making the right pep talks...Henne was misfiring most of the afternoon and did not show much leadership; the DBs played horribly; most of the stupid penalties were purely player's mistakes. There really is only so much a coach can do...the players have to execute at some point, and they didn't. Not sure what happened on the blocked field goal, but it was player's physical and mental mistakes in all three phases that contributed to the loss. One fewer anywhere, and we would have gotten out of there with a 'W'.

Just when you're replacing Carr, please don't take Coach Rod.

Hello U of M Fans,

I was pleased to read seveal comments here that caught on to the fact APP STATE played Michigan - a great team even for 4 quarters, and then got lucky blocking yet another FG. You should know ASU special teams are famous for blocking FG - its not by chance we won.
Wonder if those Buckeyes are brave enough to accept a game???

Matt said...

d, thanks. This is something I totally agree with. Michigan has the ability to win every game of the season from here on out. If that happens, everyone will be scratching his head. It will take attention away from this fiasco if Michigan finishes the season in stride with a win over OSU.

I've posted a lot, and it's because I'm absolutely crushed and this is a way of dealing with my grief.

But a sincere thank you goes out not only to all of those classy fans of other programs who have come to comfort we fans who are so Blue, but especially from our rivals who have come to stand in solidarity with us (I'm talking to you, Penn State and OSU fans). You are the real Big 10 fans. You don't rejoice like some of your wannabe fellow fans out there when your most hated rival has experienced the worst out-of-conference upset in history, but you express sympathy for our pain and shame, even when some of us have family members or spouses who don't understand.

This is the ultimate test of a true fan: to stick with your team through the worst of times. Chins up, it was a bad loss. Michigan can recover.

Go Blue, and Go Big 10.

Oh fuck.

-First off, players are responsible for poor performances, but just as much coaches are responsible for the training and motivation of those same players. Confucious said something to the effect that an untrained army is a waste of an army. That was the case. Michigan coaches let this game slide out of the mind of the players and let them focus ahead to the future contests. That was compounded by the fact that all the question marks (defense/secondary) was abysmal and poorly coached. English is out with his exposed D when Carr leaves and so is DeBord who couldn't make it at CMU. What a waste. Oh and by the way, thanks Bill Martin for ending one UM record for the longest streak going without playing a 1-AA team (since the thirties) and putting us in the books with another one for the greatest humiliation ever suffered by one team.

-Michigan recruits as good as anyone year in and out and has the ability to win the title. Why dosn't it happen? tOSU gets good corner play consistently as well as from the rest of their players. They maximize their players' potential. The only thing that can be said is that the coaching style at UM hinders all american prep stars from reaching greatness. Charles Woodson was different as have a couple players here and there been. That is because they had a natural feel for the game and didn't let bad coaching ruin their play. They had that killer instinct.

-Speaking of killer instinct, Carr is as about as intimidating and go-for-the-throat as a Bridget Moynahan is with John Edward Thomas Moynahan. I remember when a story was ran last year about how Carr was motivating the players with that movie Cinderella Man! Players in their teens and early 20s are not motivated by Renee Zell and stories of hard times in the Great Depression. Those stories teach nothing of killer instinct. And think that K.I. doesn't translate into titles? Just watch highlights of the UM PSU game in '97 and watch as a UM safety lays it all out to hit a PSU TE... then you will remember what killer instinct and giving it your all is all about. And you will know that it was the players on that team that had IT and won IT on their own. Refuse to lose!

-If you want to motivate players try a different Russell Crowe movie that young guys (like myself) get motivated off of and makes you want to go out and murder terrorist b!tches! In the opening of Gladiator when Maximus is talking to his cavalry he says, "Gentlemen, what we do in life echoes an eternity." That is the point... do you want to be remember for being second best because you weren't willing to sacrfice yourself in the name of victory and honor? If you do then you don't belong at UM. That is a reason I give that snake-in-the-grass Tressel credit. He hides behind his sweatervest but he's like Clarrett has said. He's evil and knows how to get dirty with his crew. He identifies with his players and knows how to bring out the dog in them and get them ready for the ring like Michael Vick does in the offseason. That's why he owns Carr's Lisa Frank Warriors.
Motivation isn't anything without preparation and preparation isn't anything without motivation. Get kids pumped to play by showing glorious past teams like '97 and great games honoring UM's true legacy. Show clips of Gladiator, the Waterboy and Braveheart! Know how to identify with and take care of the players so as to put them into position to win it all. Carr thinks that that can be done with a few smiles and some sweet conversations reserved for Yacht Club members.

-This brings me to the bright side. With how bad that was, tommorrow can't be worse. And next year we will surely have a new coach. So here is my dream scenario. First we all know that Michigan only hires within the family so lets look at the candidates. Ron English... are you kidding? He's out. Fredo Harbaugh... after those comments and a destined rebuilding year where we won't see his potential he's out for at least a decade. Les Miles... DUH!

-A Bo player and assistant he is family and UM fans would embrace him and his not so damned conservative approach. He identifies with his players and you will never see a Miles team unprepared... see 45-0. Their D is always in the top 3 of all the land and they have a great secondary year after year (something that plagues UM like lepracy or Madonna). They are always focused and ready for the kill. He's a motivator and a go-for-the-throat kinda coach... see the fake field goal to set up a LSU TD against ND last year in the Sugar Bowl when they were already up about 20. Which brings me to another point... Wies and ND was owned by Miles who probably loves to stick it to ND as evidenced by that trickeration from "THE HAT". And with a nickname like that... who wouldn't want an innovator like him for a coach. Furthermore, Miles looses one or two a year in the SEC, but those are usually away games and against others who are the class of the conference. He doesn't lose to the Kentuckys or Ole Miss' like Carr does to Mich State or Northwestern. Also, Miles-Tressel, those would be some classic battles. And if all that isn't enough, he's in with all the high school coaches in Louisiana and the deep south, and as such will open new doors to the deepest and most talented pool of prep stars in the nation.

-So how do we get him? Well LSU hasn't fully loved him since Saban won a title and Miles hasn't repeated the feat, though LSU has been the consistent class of the SEC since he took over. So let's say he wins the SEC West, or even the SEC title, but doesn't bring home a National title or even a shot with a loss or two. Maybe even one (aint gonna happen.. though neither was APP. State) to Saban and the tide. So at the end of the season A2 calls for their beloved son to return home and with LSU still a little cold to the never good enough Les Miles, he feels wanted, maybe sees a few more dollar signs and we got a real coach. I can only forsee the return of the 90's, maybe even better, with Miles at the helm in A2.

If a visitor to OSU's campus was in the area of the 'Shoe after OSU vs YSU Saturday, they would have thought the game was still in progress...though it had been over for about an hour. There were a few thousand that were still there to watch the post game band performances and the end of ASU vs UofM. Though I smiled all the way back to my car, I have to say I was both shocked and disappointed.

Believe it or not, I am an OSU fan that all of the Big Ten teams (yes, even UofM) when they compete against anyone except us.

I just gotta ask....does anyone know the reason for not just one, but two attempts at a 2-point conversion - especially when there was not real need to go for it the first time, making the second attempt a "must make" conversion. With that, as well as the two blocked FG attempts, is there really that much lack of faith in the UofM kickers??? I just know that the kicking game has been inconsistent, at best for UofM the last few years.

Any insight?

See you all 11/17/07...

I grew up in the shadow of the Big House persona. Rick Leach was my favorite. But this App State team is for real. I have watched them play for the last 3 years and they could beat alot of Div 1A teams. Yes they are that good. I just think that Michigan is any where near the half that could beat them.
