Irish Kicking Legend Harry Oliver Passes

A few of you emailed about the passing of former Notre Dame kicker Harry Oliver last week. Just wanted to offer our condolences on to the ND faithful.

For those not familiar with him, Oliver forever etched his name in Irish lore when his 51 yard FG as time expired beat Michigan in 1980. For Michigan fans, that miracle kick dealt the Wolverines one of its most heartbreaking defeats ever.

Here is a clip we put together last year featuring the late Meeechigan announcer Bob Ufer's call of the play...

Even though my heart bleeds maize it's endings like those that make college football - and rivalries like M/ND - great. Sadly, Oliver's personal ending came far too soon - he was only 47 years old.

P.S. I hope one of the first questions Harry asked when he got to that great big football stadium in the sky was if "Somebody" quieted the strong wind that had been blowing the day of that M/ND clash in '80 - right up until Oliver attempted his kick.

so was it 30-29, 30-27, or 29-27?

...my God, is it that hard to add 3 to 26 and remember that the other team had 27?

He's a "Michigan Man." Simple addition not required for a degree in Communications.
