Two-Minute Drill

* Gerd at the O-Zone has put up his list of the 100 things he's looking forward to in the upcoming college football season. Good stuff.

(HT: LM)

* Scout.com has their preview of the 2007 Wolverines posted.

* Looking for a cool college football gift? Check out RIVALSFlag.com.

Coincidentally, one of the final "Michigan" things Bo signed prior to his passing last year was one of their items, shown below...

The caption under the picture above on the RIVALFlags.com site reads, "One of the most prized possessions in my collection. Signed by Bo 11/16/2006, mailed from Michigan Football Offices on 11/17/2006 the day Bo passed away."

* Finally, Huskerpedia.com picked up an old column by BaggyPantsDevil praising Nebraska fans. Reading the thread, what I found interesting was this post by a Big Red fan who apparently works for Fox Sports Radio - XM 142...

"while it sounds like he's bagging ohio state to bag them... i was at the michigan-ohio state game in columbus last year (2nd time for me, was at OSu-San Diego State but that wasn't this obviously) and have never NEVER seen a fan base that rude... ok, short of Boulder... but Boulder is pretty much only the stoner students.. it was the entire OSU fan base! I'll bet I saw at least 100 t-shirts that said F*** Michigan... If I ever see a Nebraska fan with a shirt like that you can bet I will get as many people around me to back me up to get that fan to get that shirt off immediatelty... (not just because it's offensive.. but more because it demeans us as a group) and these Buckeye people not only wore them but were chanting "Blow Big Blue and "F" you too"sheesh!!!!!!!! even my producer said wow....

not saying all buckeyes fans are like that... they aren't BUT I saw more angry crazy, out of control fans in Columbus than anywhere I have ever been...

and for the record.. I have seen, called PBP or covered college fb games at 74 stadiums across the country... so I've seen pretty much all of it.

And OSU was the worst. A shame really, I like the people at the AD's office in Columbus and I have a few strong friends in that town... I like the city.. but the fans there have to work on their demeanor... the whole show is beneath them."

its just not the fans in columbus, ohio that are rude, its the whole state of ohio. I live in the state of ohio and the #1 reason why I hate it so bad here is because of the buckeye fans. They can't except a fact that I like a better team. A team that is known to have the most wins in college football history. In all honesty do the fans here expect us to like them or convert being a buckeye fan acting like they do? Seriously, its bad here in ohio. I had 3 guys deliver furniture that i bought. One of the guys took one step into my house and seen all my michigan stuff and refused to help in the delivery. He left the other 2 do it all. The other 2 is the ones that told me he didnt like that I was a Michigan fan. Coincidentally there was a knick in my coffee table that I had to return because of damage. What babies. I hate buckeye fans, except the one im married too. But I will have to admit,
My brothers, and i have convinced quiet a few to becoming a michigan fan in our town. Good luck to all you ohio Michigan fans out there and be strong. Go Blue

in order: "It's", "it's", "accept", "it's", "saw", "with", "let", "nick", "I'm", "to", "quite" and "become". You're barely literate, brad coe.

Also: 100 out of 100,000 is .01%. Hardly worth hanging your hat on when tarring an entire fanbase. This is a not dead, but dying, horse you're beating. Some OSU fans, myself included, are seriously encouraging others to be better fans - as is the university, and things seem to be getting better, marshmallow assaults notwithstanding.

On an unrelated topic: why isn't this blog funny anymore?

If you weren't so parsimonious with Brad, Senior Caballo, I wouldn't feel so compelled to point this out: 100/100,000 = 0.1%.

Cue ohio_guy with a witty retort and crying about how we're obsessed with tOSU in 3 - 2 - 1...

el caballo and cvillebuck are idiots. 100/100,000 = 0.1%.

remedial math lesson here for all you buckeyes and wolverine wannabes:

100/10,000 = 1%

100/100,000 = .1%

That 100 things list is pretty good, except he lost my vote of approval when he said he is looking forward to Brent Slushberger doing anything but retire.

He did mention South Carolina, so it ain't all bad. He did forget that the UofF-SC game 2 years ago in Columbia will also be a focal point of both squads since SC won that one.

Out of Conference said...

Uh, John - that's not quite right, but that's ok, no one else above you was either.

100/10,000 = 0.01
0.01 * 100% = 1%

100/100,000 = 0.001
0.001 * 100% = 0.1%

You know, I kind of like the fact that the guy wouldn't help with the delivery. The knick, well, that's another story. I live in Florida, and run into more OSU fans than I can remember, and with the exception of one, and he's from Florida, all of them are loud, bragadocious, and general asshats. I really hate to paint a broad stroke and say ALL tOSU are like that, but my experience has led me to believe that 95% are like that.

stevemorrison said...

The argument over percentages would only matter if the author had actually come in contact with 100,000 fans at the stadium. I think we can safely assume he did not.

OSU fans are who they are, and it's probably not going to change soon. I recall a post back in November about how, with all the usual Buckeye-ness going on after The Big Game with the heckling and burning and such, the higher-ups were actually PROUD of how the fans reacted. I shudder to think what it would take to dissapoint such people.

I'm sorry all I heard was blah blah blah blah! Ok huskerpedia, and michigan fans alike can we just move on? "Oh they were mean on game day, Boo hoo hoo!" The point is beyond moot and yes there are bad fans, come to Philadelphia and check an eagles vs. cowboys game. They have their own courts inside the baseball, basketball, and football stadiums and people have died for wearing a cowboys jersey.

MY POINT IS THIS: just move on and if you don't like that kind of atmosphere, go buy a big screen tv and watch the game in HD.

Yost said...

Ah, our first "it happens everywhere else" comment.

MY POINT IS THIS: if you don't like an unbiased observer such as a Nebraska fan who had no stake in the game pointing out ON A NEBRASKA BOARD that he thought OSU fans were out of control, maybe the point isn't moot.

So Richard Cranium, according to your logic, any sporting event is a perfect excuse to behave like an animal -- without regard for fellow man or law? Rooting for the home team trumps everything else?

But then again we start kids out young these days, I'd like to invite any dissenters to one of my soccer games and watch the parents come unglued over corner kick call in a U12 girls soccer game... and watch the police come because they have to protect the refs and the coaches (happens a lot more than you think). With parental examples like that it's no wonder kids grow up to be Florida fan or Buckstache.

I like that Rival Flags is supporting the Big Ten's efforts to call Penn State and MSU a rivalry. Not go go all off-topic on everyone. Wouldn't Spartan fans want to Beat Michigan more than PSU? And wouldn't the same go for PSU (or at least Beat OSU)?

Just found that interesting. Back to the Columbus bashing. "Columbus raped Native Americans!" Woo!

MGoBlue93 said...

Just saw this while surfing... check out tOSU spelling.

srudoff said...

"it was the entire OSU fan base!"

"not saying all buckeyes fans are like that... they aren't "

and so goes credibility out the window

reed... I wonder if that's a WWE story-line move on the Big Ten's part?!?! The Big Ten wants at least one dramatic storyline every weekend... especially with the network coming online.

In my experience, Sparty has always resented U of M a bit because:

1. A lot of kids who didn't get into U of M end up going to MSU.

2. Sparty has always considered U of M its biggest rival. And generally it seems to me that in most cases the intrastate games usually are (Texas/Oklahoma comes to mind as an exception and maybe the Buffs and NU but only because CSU seems to own the Buffs and CU is embarrassed by it). However, to a Meeechigan Man (or Woman), tOSU is the biggest game. That little bit of rejection has always cut deep; whether Sparty likes to admit it or not.

The really funny thing is now that I'm older and no longer living in Michigan, I've met tons of Sparty alum on this side of the country. And they're great folks (and we're mostly all Michigan expats afterall). It was even pretty cool watching Sparty take home the men's hockey title!

tOSU spelling?

so if the guy with the E on his chest is leaning back as he clearly is in that picture, it's misspelled?

pretty sure those are trailblazer fans anyway

El Caballo de Sangre said...

For what it's worth, I was, in fact, exactly correct about the percentage in question. Also, for what it's worth, the best fans I've ever run into here in Columbus were MSU fans. I ended up in their section when T.J. Duckett was playing for Sparty, and they were all decent people it seemed. It helped that they were also resigned to their fate and didn't seem to mind losing all that much...make of that what you will.

MGOBlue,
My point was no matter where you go it is going to have some sort of bad element, even Ann Arbor. So by my logic you should not try to twist my words around into something I didn't say. I know there are bad people in this world and they get out of control at huge games because they let the outcomes affect their lives more than it should. All I can do as a fan is lead by example, and tell people I see acting stupid to grow up.

But you as a fan of an opposing team or a "non-biased" team can stop passing judgement and get the fuck over it. I am non-biased about Colorado but I wouldn't pass judgement if I went to a game and saw some serious behavior issues, I would not pass judgement or lump the entire fanbase into a category based on one game. It is the whole "holyier than thou" atitude that I get disgusted with rather than the actual acts of childishness, alcoholism, name calling, and couch burning. I am disgusted because as a legal adult I am responsible for myself and the people that are with me, and no one else. The rest will get what they get, as it will always come back on them in the end, i.e arrested, knocked out, or victimized themselves.

MGoBlue93 said...

Lighten up Francis... I asked a question... not twisting words in your mouth. If you talk about boorish behavior and then justify it by telling folks to move on if they don't like it, then my question was entirely reasonable based upon your own words. You get the fuck over it!
