Florida Oreo

We've all heard of the Grand Slam in golf and the Triple Crown in horse racing. Well, I submit that the University of Florida has added another sporting achievement to the lexicon of collegiate athletics: The Oreo.

Two solid NCAA basketball titles on the outside surrounding a delicious, creamy BCS football title in the center.

I thought an "oreo" was a threesome with two .... ah nevermind...

How can something surround something else by being in the middle?

So football is the "white" sport in between two "chocolate" basketball titles. I don't know guys, some overly sensitive people could take this the wrong way.

Not impressed. If I am not mistaken, there is still only one University in this great nation that has won the Grand Slam of National Titles: The four major professional sports played in the United States....Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey.

And I think we all know which University I'm referring to.

The University of Florida is obviously the best collegiate program in the country. We're better than Michigan by far. In fact, Michigan is not even on our radar. How many NIT titles do you guys have now?

I still cannot believe that Michigan thought they should have played Ohio State in the BCS Championship game. How did you guys like that Rose Bowl?

Anon 8:12,

there's nothing obvious about it. You had a good run over the last 367 days in two (major) sports but that doesn't make you the "best collegiate program in the country".
You don't have the tradition that Ohio States, Michigans, Texas, and Oklahomas of the world have. What's obvious is that your fans (you for example) don't know what to do with their newly found success. Enjoy it while it lasts, instead of shoving it into people's faces.

I certainly agree with Anon 8:26, but for what it's worth, Benny more or less brought on another day of the UofF sore winner's idiotic posts with the Oreo bit. (no offense to RobG - I agreed with your post yesterday).

Oh and Dezzi13 - you made me snicker.

Florida's Championships in the last Fifteen Years:

Basketball: 2
Football: 2

How many titles has Michigan had in the last fifteen years? Give up? None. In 1997 Nebraska won the National Title in football. Michigan could barely beat a crappy Washington State team.

You guys do have more NIT titles than us though so you should feel pretty good about that.

Sore Winners? What are you talking about? We only have three demands.

1. We want Florida to be recognized as the supreme ruler of college athletics. Just admit that we have the best collegiate athletic programs.

2. Admit that Michigan is consistently overrated in all athletics.

3. Admit that Michigan did not deserve a second chance at Ohio State in the BCS Championship game.

I think those are pretty easy to put into writing. All we want is a little respect; instead all we get is dissed upon.

gator dynasty:

you don't have the "supreme collegiate athletics program". What you have is 3 championships in two (high profile) sports. I'm not going to argue that Michigan is better than you in football or basketball (i happen to be a Buckeye fan), but i will say that dominating two sports for 365 days is a far cry from a dynasty (and your teams didn't dominate either one of the 2 sports). When you're "on the map" for as long as UM or OSU, then we can talk.

Your teams deserve all the respect in the world. Your fans, along with some of your classless playes (J. Noah) deserve some "cold fizzy water on their heads".

Somewhere a single violin plays for gator dynasty and his woefully under-appreciated athletic program.

I had no idea Florida fans were this delusional.

The only thing I can compare this shortsightedness to is an interview I read with Avril Lavigne (why I was reading this is another issue entirely) in which the interviewer asked if her musical influences derived from the likes of David Bowie or the Sex Pistols. She responded, "Who is David Bowie?"

That's it in a nutshell. Florida fans: The Avril Lavignes of sports fandom.

If everyone is going to talk about "supreme collegiate athletics program[s]" and the number of championships that schools have, shouldn't someone mention UCLA.

Congratulations Florida, you now have 2 consecutive national titles in basketball, only 5 more to go before you tie UCLA. Did I also mention that UCLA has 99 national championships? Just thought some things should be mentioned when talking about the "supreme collegiate athletics program."

Everyone knows Florida plays in the MIGHTY SEC....ALL BOW DOWN TO THE MIGHTY SEC!!!!

No reason to try and reason to any team who plays in the MIGHTY SEC!!!

I don't recall the post bashing UF in any way, so why should UF fans feel the need to defend themselves?

I don't get it either, Steve G.

Mmmm...Oreo. With fresh Buckeye milk for dunking?

As for the Florida folks...

I've seen this behavior from Florida fans my entire life - even back when they didn't have anything to brag about.

Funny post. Nice pic.

And no, I don't think we are the best in everything.

But don't get bent out of shape about what "Anonymous" said. For all we know, it's a bunch of OSU or FSU fans posting stupid stuff, pretending to be from UF, to make Gator fans sound arrogant. I work with an FSU guy who's just beside himself right now and a guy from Ohio who's gotten really quiet.

To me college sports in alot of ways has the hardest time not accepting new members into its so called elite lists. While I have alot of respect for the Notre Dame, Alabama, and UCLA basketball teams from the past that has nothing to do with the current Notre Dame, alabama, and UCLA teams. As a LSU fan i have heard "you don't have any tradition" even though since 1950 we have won just as many national championships as michigan and penn state.

ohio_guy said...

Florida fans making a big deal and claiming to be a better overall sports school than Michigan or Ohio State is like a Tampa Bay fan saying the Bucs are a better all time team than the 49ers or Cowboys. Doesn't make sense.

They just don't have the history to make such a claim, despite having a more recent title.

lsuadam said...

right now though florida is a better sports school than michigan and ohio state. I don't think any florida fans though have claimed to have a bigger sports history than ohio state or michigan. Though in my lifetime Florida has won more national championships in football than michigan and ohio state

Florida Oreo. Yeah, that's tasty I suppose - if a bit unhealthy. But it's kind of a mouthful to say. Can we just call it a "Floreo" going forward?

Anonymous said...

By the way, Michigan won the MNC in 1997 and OSU won it in 2002 (I think). That is 2 football titles in 10 years between the two schools.

Most of this Flordia hootin'nanny reminds me of two things:

1) MTV.

2) Jose Canseco.

Anonymous said...

lsuadam: they don't call it a "mythical" national championship for nothing. I'll admit Penn State has "only" won two MNCs in the past 25 years. However, you can't overlook the fact that the idiot pollsters have screwed the team many times, the last being 1994. Sorry, PSU would have smoked Nebraska that year.
