MZone Helpful Tip of the Day

While this has nothing to do with college football, it was sent by a friend and made me laugh. Plus, it can be very useful. Thus...

If you are sitting next to someone who irritates you on a plane, train or subway...
1. Quietly and calmly open up your laptop case.
2. Remove your laptop.
3. Turn it on.
4. Make sure the guy who won't leave you alone can see the screen.
5. Go to this post.
6. Close your eyes and tilt your head up to the sky.
7. Click on this link.
8. Enjoy.

The words in the link are backwards as the letters start on the left and continue to the right. They do not connect as arabic words do and the sentence is a fragment that was likely copied and pasted from some article.

It translates to:
The Egyptian Army trades...

Haha, that would be pretty good to use on someone

Gee, thanks mohammed. The fact that it's not actually real arabic makes it virtually laugh free.
Boooooo!

making light of suicide bombers---of whatever native language, just isn't funny. it wasn't funny before the translation...

and as your response indicates, "the raterinks", it is also racist, and disrespectful

Yost--stick to what you are good at please: football, naked co-eds, and bashing tOSU.
thx

To say the post is racist is irritating at best and insulting at worst. Such hair-trigger politcal correctness and name calling under the guise of being "enlightened" instead shows just the opposite as it is intended to silence any point of view on controversial subjects the name-caller disagrees with.

On top of that, you're giving the post way too much significance. To paraphrase Freud -- sometimes a joke is just a joke.

Thus, TitleIX - stick to what you are good at please: commenting on football, naked co-eds and bashing tOSU. thx.

I'm not really all that concerned with the feelings of Muslim extremists so the disrespectful or racist angle means nothing to me. I just thought it wasn't that funny compared to some of the absolute classic shit that gets posted here. I also thought it was funny that someone figured it was necessary to point out that the Arabic was incorrect.
On a different note, I have a question for Benny and/or Yost. Maybe this was covered already but I haven't been here much since you stopped letting us just post. Obviously the comments have been decimated on this site because one has to sign up on a google account now to post. Was changing the format something you were forced to do? I thought you were all up in arms about internet freedom and the like? I'm not an activist or anti-establishment or anything I just enjoyed this site a hell of a lot more back when every bit you put up would get a minimum of 30 comments and the really good ones would get into a hundred plus. What's the story?

TR,

We were being hit so heavily w/ spam comments for awhile (most of which you, the reader didn't see as we'd try to take them down as soon as they went up), it was becoming a) not fun for us and b) taking up too much time for something that is just a hobby. Thus, we closed posts to anonymous commenters.

It's frustrating for us, too, as we didn't want to do that. But it was more frustrating having all the abusive anon comments.

It's also frustrating b/c Blogger makes you sign up for an account where as EDSBS, which doesn't use Blogger, asks for an email address before you comment so, if somebody's being an ass, they can simply block your email/IP address.

But, I hear you, TR. As such, we might have to revist the comments set-up on the site in the near future.

I thought the spam and anon bullshit might have been the cause. You guys must have done a hell of a job getting rid of it because I don't recall seeing it at all. Hopefully more people will realize that the sign up is free and it's not that big of a hassle.

This is disturbing.

If Muhamed Atta(sp) were alive, he would definitely be suing your ass and if Johnny Cochran were alive, he'd definitely be taking the case.

Of course Atta is dead, because he was a radical Muslim who flew a plane into a building killing thousands of innocent people...and the orders to do so were probably written in the same scribbles that were on the scren in joke...errr....why is this
offensive again? I'm confused...

I thought the joke was great! Lighten up guys. (of course I'm Catholic and white male, meaning it's okay to make fun of me)

T.R.-

I know people would access the site, acknowledge the humor, and probably read the comments afterward.I thought people would go to the site and subsequently wonder what the Arabic text said.

Also, (and this is not a remark towards you, but to all the posters), if my prior post suggested that I felt it was not funny, then I apologize because I found it to be hilarious.

Excellent observations by Woody's puching bag. Of course, like david I too am a white male although protestant instead of catholic. Am I allowed in a public building? There's an off chance I might just think about God. I'd hate to offend some fist biter.

try it, but dont cry if you get your head kicked in.

not really funny. Airplane explosion humor is not my thing

the raterinks said...

My apologies, peanuts5402. I wasn't sure where you were going with that first one. I guess it is kind of interesting to know that the scribble actually means something. I just assumed it was garbled crap someone made to look like arabic.

Peanuts,

No offense at all even if you didn't find this - or any other post on this site - funny. That's subjective. That's opinion. And I respect anybody's opinion, whether I agree or not.

What I don't respect is when some (not you) start saying a post is "racist" as a knee-jerk reaction to a simple joke they might not like.

Hear Hear Yost; BTW, read editorials in the Michigan Daily lately???

TitleIX said...

w/r/t "silencing any point of view on controversial subjects"...

consider this...
would the 'joke' have been 'as funny' if it didn't contain the faux arabic?????

and why did andrew feel the need to call out OOC on his 'bad asian-american accent' w/r/t beer bong girl below?

and finally, why all the discussion previously regarding the COLOR of Florida's QB...
recall the post, to paraphrase, 'hey tOSU, when the white QB is in the game it's a run'

I just held up the mirror.
You all had your reaction to it.

LOL @ Title IX...

You sound like someone who, if you went camping, and were being charged by a bear and a marmot, would give the marmot equal attention for fear of sterotyping the bear...

But you sure are "enlightened"...

Yost said...

"consider this...

Oh, T9, please tell me you're not serious? But since you asked...

No, it wouldn't have been as funny, or even funny at all, if it instead contained faux German or Polish or Japanese or whatever. Why? B/c the suicide bombings you read about in the paper yesterday, and last week, and last year and the last couple of years are being committed by extremists in a region of the world who speak arabic. So whether or not the joke is funny is a matter of opinion. But to say it is racist is absurd.

As for OOC's comment on the Beer Bong post, that's something you'll have to ask OOC. I didn't defend (or to be fair, criticize) his comment in my response to Andrew. My beef w/ Andrew was his other remark saying the post assumed the people/girl in the video were exchange students b/c they were asian. But as stated right there in the post, the exchange student assumption was made b/c of the heavily accented english. Period. But from your blanket response agreeing w/ Andrew's comment, I'm guessing you somehow think the post itself is racist as well.

Finally, your thing about Florida's Tim Tebow is laughable. "Why all the discussion regarding the COLOR of the Florida QB?" The "discussion" was a one paragraph rip to make fun of OSU's lack of adjustment in BCS game pointing out that, when Tebow was in the game, it was always a running play. Tebow happened to be white while the starter, Leak, happened to be black. Thus, the joke was basically, "Hey, OSU, we'll make it simple for you - when the white QB comes in the game for his one play a quarter, it's going to be a running play, so adjust!"

Are you really so hyper-sensitive in a politically correct way that the mere mention of skin color or ethnicity leads you to automatically believe there is racial intent behind it?

Oh, and I'd also like to sincerely apologize to Tim Tebow for mentioning that he's white.

T9, thanks for pointing out Andrew's critique of my post on the beer-bonging girl that apepared to be of Asian decent. I hadn't noticed his post, frankly because I was out of town. I did go back and reply.

I'm with Yost on this one. That link would not have been near as funny without the arabic-looking text for the reasons Yost gave. The public's preconception of a suicide bomber on a plane is associated with Islamic extremists, and much of that pre-conception is due to the race/ethnicity/religion of those that carry out such attrocities.

I generally respect everyone's opinion on here, and that hasn't changed. I can certainly agree to disagree.
