Light Thursday...

Light blogging today as real life has intruded. But we still found a couple nuggets...

SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL WHITE BUCKEYE FANS TO STOP RAPPING

EDSBS found this video of an Ohio State "rapper." It could be the worst thing ever...which also means it's one of the funniest things ever.

Ohio State is the "Beast of the East?" Nice geography, RunDIC.

And I notice he couldn't resist a couple "Fuck Floridas" in there. Talent and class.

PLAYOFF TALK

Brian at MGoBlog has a great playoff idea.

PLEASE BE TRUE, PLEASE BE TRUE!

Sean at MSC says there's a credible rumor going around that Jake Long will return for his senior season. Cross your fingers and toes, U-M fans.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE ALAMO BOWL?

The folks at Burnt Orange Nation are asking Longhorn fans this as UT prepares to make the bowl trip Michigan did last year. An outsider's opinion? In hindsight, I think it's best that Michigan lost that game last year. Yes, you heard me right. If we win, go 8-4, maybe, just maybe it doesn't seem as bad and Herrmann stays on. Not good.

So, as Texas fans ponder how they feel, first answer this question -- Got any coaches you want to get rid of?

BANNER BIG 10 SEASON COULD HAVE BEEN EVEN BETTER

So says this excellent ESPN article.

Kinda makes you pine for the "I live in franklin...county!" guy.

One more lateral from the TE back to Breaston and that game would have been immortal.

My guess is that UT is embarrassed, humiliated, and hopefully self-loathing after dropping the final two games of an absolutely underwhelming shitfest of a season. Other than that, I'm sure they're THRILLED to get to play in the Alamo Bowl.

EDSBS guys are pissed a OSU right now as Tressel flew into Florida last night to personally get a commitment from one of their states best linebackers Brian Rolle. Urban Cryer's a little upset tonight as Rolle's was to visit the Gators next week. His speed and explosive tackling remind me of Mike Doss.

Bruce Hooley is to the Big 10 what Gary Danielson is to the SEC. Wisconsin getting such huge props for a one-loss season. Great, you lost one game, but that game wasn't close (or roughly as close as the UofM - Vandy game- no wait, I'm wrong, you outpassed Vandy and kicked 2 extra FGs- you rule, but your QB got horse-sickled by Mich's D and your running game put up what? 36 FEET?!?). Wisc didn't beat a ranked team all year, they had to be unsportsmanlike to secure the win against PSU (not by playing football, but by exploiting a bug in the rules). They didn't even play Ohio State, but you go on tooting their horn Mr. Hooley while you're sipping the kool-aid the hippies in Mad Town are giving you.

What the hell is wrong with some of these OSU fans!? Granted, you can find f'd up fans from any school, but OSU seems to be represented way too much when it comes to making a complete and utter ass out of yourself.

Yost, thanks for the link to MGo Blog's playoff idea. How sweet would it be to get the PAC10 or SEC in Ann Arbor or Columbus in December?

And talk about conflicted, I'm a Buckeye going to the Rose Bowl, with a group of Trojans, to root for the Wolverines.

The Big 10 leads with 9 players overall on the 1st team.

1st Team from Big Blue?
Jake Long, OT; Lamarr Woodley, DE; Leon Hall, CB
2nd Team from Big Blue?
Mike Hart, RB; Alan Branch, DT; David Harris, LB

I'm definitely sayin'
GO BLUE

Re. Alamo Bowl: I've also wondered whether Michigan would have made the coordinator changes and had the focus to rebound if we had won the Alamo Bowl. I suspect we wouldn't have, though it would have been cool to see Breaston take an Ecker lateral and make history.

Re. Big 10 season: There hasn't been such a gaping disparity between M/tOSU and the rest of the conference since the "Big 2, Little 8" era in the 70's. I usually have a lot of respect for Wisconsin, but come on, has there ever been a lamer 1-loss team from a major conference?. Their out of conference schedule was unacceptably weak. Sure ND gets undeserved attention, but they played Georgia Tech, UCLA, and USC while the Badgers took on Bowling Green, Buffalo, and freakin' Western Illinois! The rest of the Big 10 was a disaster--not one truly scary team in the bunch, and a few (Iowa, Sparty) that were huge disappointments. The rest of Hooley's article was pretty good, but to suggest that the Badgers somehow got screwed out a BCS game is ridiculous.

Re. Jake Long: I saw a draft projection yesterday (hey, I'm a Lions fan--that's all I have) that inlcuded Woodley, Long, Hall, and Branch all in the top ten. Long and Branch seem to be particularly great prospects, and as much as Long would help what should be a fantastic offense in '07, I think he should go to the NFL. We saw with Tripp Welbourne that "can't miss" guys can miss because of injuries and it would be a shame if Long became one of those guys.

Re: Jake Long

I agree. While I applaud his dedication to the program and his teammates (as well as his personal goals), I'm really really worried about him given his injury history. Now I have to root for (at least) five things every game:
1. A Michigan win
2. Chad Henne not getting injured
3. Michael Hart not getting injured
4. Jake Long not getting injured
5. Lloyd Carr not getting a heart attack when/if one of his senior stars gets injured

After anon 7:07's endorsement of the playoff idea at MGO, I checked it out. Nothing new written, but still worthwhile to point out playoffs are better. He says strength of schedule should be heavily weighed in. Great, but then says 'especially out of conference opponents'. My beef with that is (for this uyear, for example) that if SoCal can claim a win over Arky as a great OOC win, why can't Florida & LSU claim the same win with equal weight? Just because a team is not out of conference, doesn't mean it's a cake walk, no more than SoCal's game against Cal should be wegihted less than Tenn's game against Cal. True, if no team ever played out of conf, then no one would have a great idea how the conference favor each other. So it's understandable the rest of the nation's beef with the SEC making claims that at least based on OCC schedule, they can't back up. But a team that beats a great OOC team, shouldn't garnish any more favor than an in conference team beating that same (now in conf) team. Someone on here said it before I did that there needs to be 1-2 open slots each year for a game TBD based on the previous season's results. The B10's 1-3 should play two of SEC 1-3, BE 1-3, B12 1-3, and ACC 1-3, and vice versa in two of there OOC games. Teams 4-6 in each conf likewise. As far as extra games for student athletes, drop the 12th game of the regular season, drop the conf championship since no one but BCS puts faith in them anyways, and the players won't play any more games than the 14 some of them do they do now anyway.

Yeah, grammar, spell-checking, proof-reading, and homonyms are kicking my ass lately.

Maybe he's from east Columbus and we should just get off his back. I mean it looks like he tried really hard on those lyrics and that "I'm too thug to smile look" So why don't we just all lay off the guy. I don't see anyone else making attempts to be a gangsta rapper on this site so untli then leave the ass-clowns alone.

"Ohio State is the "Beast of the East?" Nice geography, RunDIC."

Yes...because we all know that UM is the champion of the "west". (tell that to USC)

If you look at the nation as a whole, Ohio is in the east.

Well, since no one's answered the question yet:

Yes, many Texas fans are dying to get rid of OC Greg Davis, despite his winning an assistant COY award or some such.

I understand your point about injuries, but the Tripp Welborne example doesn't really fit. Tripp injured a knee at a time when knee injuries ended careers. Medicine has come so far since then that we have guys with worse injuries not even missing a full calendar year.

I'd sure like to see Big Jake back next year, but I couldn't fault him for going pro for the reason you mentioned.

It'd be great to have the top teams play each other early in the season, but if there were a playoff it wouldn't be necessary...afterall any losses would be argued as "early season" loses.

I'd disagree with MgoBlog on the 6 team format. Go 8 teams, it's the same amount of weeks played, and it gives two more teams a shot (two less teams complaining they were left out). The argument is the bye gives an incentive to win during the regular season. Let the incentive be home field advantage and the seed pairings.

I'm also not a fan of letting a team pick who they want to play. It would just add a lot more politics to the fray.

Anon 8:38a Welcome to History 101 and put away your crayons you won't need them as this is not an OSU grad level course. The Victors was written in 1898 after UM beat the Chicago Maroons. The B10 conference was widely known as the Western Conference since most of the football at that time was played east of the Appalachian mountains. Get it? Champions of the West...

Ohio is in the Eastern time zone...but "beast" doesn't really rhyme or flow with "Great Lakes Region"...then again "over" and "Glover" really don't either...

Anonymous said...

History lesson: When "The Victors" was written, Michigan was in the "Intercollegiate conference of Faculty Representatives" which was commonly called the "Western Conference" which was comprised of University of Chicago, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Purdue University and the University of Wisconsin, Indiana University and the State University of Iowa. In 1912, tOSU was admitted. Chicago withdrew in 1946 and Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) was added three years later in 1949.
So, when Michigan beat the University of Chicago for the league championship, they truly were the "champions of the west".

Quiet Storm said...

If you Bucknuts actually knew anything about College Football history, you would know that "The Victors" was written around the turn of the century and the line "Champions of the West" was a reference to how Yale and Harvard and Princeton, etc. were the major football powers in the east and Michigan was the only major power west of those Ivy League teams.

I sure miss the days when we could make fun of tOSU for losing to us
instead of this nonsense.
Oh well, maybe after sweatervest retires in another 20 years we can get a win over them.

Anyone wanna bet how many of the aforementioned and history challenged buckstaches probably think script ohio was a tOSU invention?
