BCS Show Open Thread

Ok, like a politician retiring to his hotel suite to watch election returns after getting discouraging exit polling numbers (and is the BCS process really any different?), I'm going to go watch the bad news unfold.

UPDATE: Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

Can you demand a recount?

Harris poll is out:

#1 - OSU
#2 - Florida
#3 - Michigan

The final includes how all of the individual voters voted. Sorry folks, the Fat Lady (from Columbus, no doubt) seems to have sang.

fgAll this talk of National Championship game is bullshit. This year the Championship game was played in Columbus in Nov not in the college football hotbed of Glendale Arizona in Jan? WTF. We lost and it was a hell of a game. Rematch next year in Ann Arbor. While Im waiting any LSU fans out there want to sell me their Rose Bowl Tix for cheap.............:)

Scott (GO BLUE WERE #2 this year!)

I will be watching women's basketball instead.

As much as I hate TOSU in November, I'm going to be rooting like hell for them to beat shit out of Florida in January.

Lesson #1: You gotta win all your games.
Lesson #2: The BCS is a bad system.

It hurts me to say this, but I will be rooting for Ohio State now.

If Lloyd would have known how much whining would have helped, he would have cried too, just like Meyer. Meyer needs to get a life. I wish tOSU not only beats them, but embarasses them like we beat on ND

Michigan got Jacked!

Sour grapes, I knows, but

I see some Michigan number 4's...

Too bad Harris doesn't have a list of individual ballots from the previous week. 2 Louisville's at number 3, I'm ok with that if it were that way since Nov 19.

Gene Ponti: LSU 3, Michigan 4.
Fuck him.

So, saying, "F#ck Florida" is appropriate, but "F#ck Michigan" is not. Just so we know where we stand.

We know that you will make our conference proud!

All I can say now, is,

Buckeyes will destroy the Gators and the Wolves will humiliate the Trojans. Total point differential will break 50.

It has become apparent that there is some sort of coaches bias agaisnt Michigan the '97 vote and now. What I hope happens is that in 2007 the M coaching staff pours it on every opponent, runs the score as high as possible and screw everybody. Start with USC in the Rose Bowl. Win all the games and then we cannot (I hope) be denied.

Anonymous said...

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Fuck all you Big 10 homers! Go Gators! Go SEC!

I hope USC whips that ass in the Rose Bowl!

Un-fuckin-believable!!! The Gators have gotten by on luck all season. Especially against LSU, Florida State, and South Carolina. They got their arse handed to 'em by Auburn. Michigan loses to the #1 team in the nation and they don't get the rematch because they didn't win their conference. Thanks for chokin' big Arky!

We lost to the number 1 team in the nation. Florida laost to (at the time) number 11 Auburn.

I hate FOX Sports. It really classy that they said the Carr should get over it and focus on the Rose Bowl when they were talking about a comment he made before the selection. But of course it was fine of Meyer to beg for votes for the last 2 weeks.

What a crock of shit. This whole thing is so fucking political it's insane. What's even sadder is that there is only 1 good game out of the 5 BS games. I can't believe these idiots voting changed their votes that much. Did they watch the Florida-Arkansas game? How Arkansas (who has zero quarterback and is totally one dimensional) SHOULD have won that game, if dumbass Fish hadn't run backwards 15 yards and tried an over the shoulder catch on that punt at his 4 to gift wrap the TD and game. I came away so unimpressed with both teams. Anyway, the bowls:

LSU-ND? Boring. LSU big.

Boise St/Oklahoma. Boring. OU big, and to boot, who the fuck cares.

Wake Forest-Louisville? Maybe in basketball, but again, boring. Louisville big, and again, who the fuck cares?

Michigan-USC? The only good game of the bunch...but I'm worried both teams could have a case of the fuck-its, since USC choked and Michigan wuz robbed.

tOSU-FU? (Yes, I know it's U of F, but really FU) OSU will win by at least 14. Boring.

this will be weird: the first time i will ever root for my two most hated teams in one season (ND vs. UCS and O$U vs. the GAYTERS).

"so learn to take care of way crapier teams than you before u start whining about going to the National championship"

"Crapier?" OK sport. As soon I as figure out what the fuck that means, I will personally see to it that Michigan schedules and beats "crapier" teams. I know that Western Carolina was 2-9 in their rigorous I-AA schedule. Does that make them a "crapier" team? By the way, is that some sort of hick pidgen English?

Anonymous said...

Not trying to be sour grapes, but some of these Harris Polls are ridiculous.

How exactly do some of these people rank Notre Dame ahead of USC?

Michigan #4 behind LSU in a poll, Louisville in another?

Cal #9?

Money talks. I'm sure we're not the only team that is getting jobbed by voter fraud and dirty politics.(Notre Dame shouldnt be playing in a January bowl, let alone a BCS hell. Hell, lets have a true championship game...with a one game playoff. Notre Dame vs. Florida/OSU winner. There is America's champion. What a joke.)

PS...I'm still shocked that we can "finish" our season at #2, and drop not once, but twice in the polls.

Jim Harbaugh v.2 said...

tOSU is the clear #1. UM had their chance and lost. who's to say UF can't win it? everyone said tOSU had no shot against miami in the '03 fiesta, they were like 18 point dogs. and then look what happened. so how do you know UF can't beat tOSU? you don't, but what we do know is UM couldn't. no rematch, it has to be UF.

College Bob said...

Do not under estimate the UF defense. The DBs are suspect, but the D's speed is awesome. Also, do not under estimate your opponent in the Rose Bowl. If UM gets its ass kicked Jan. 1, all your bitchin will have been for naught!

As for all of those that question the SEC, we are the strongest conference year in and year out. For those of you that question that comment, why not push for the conferences to have interconference play by every member team each year? The conferences could rotate play every two years.

Good luck to UM with USC, and good luck to UF. Can you UMers really live with OSU winning another NC?

We can only hope that the Bucks beat the shit out of Florida and we beat USC. What was it the cry baby coach from Florida said a few weeks ago....something about all the coaches rallying together to change the BCS system....something tells me he isn't whining tonight, I really can't wait until he sits crying on the sidelines after getting spanked by the Bucks.

i'm just going to be thankful that the wolverines aren't going to be playing notre dame in the rose bowl...now that would have been a sour way to end the season.

college bob...

We haven’t underestimated UF... it’s just that you really have no idea what UF is getting themselves into... while the rest of the country watches a lot of college ball from all over... SEC fans only watch the SEC.

And I can honestly tell you that tOSU's front 7 is going to prison rape Chris Leak. UF is going to see a front seven like they have never seen before.

And then tOSU's O-line is going to rip the heads off of UF's front 7 seven and cram the ball down their throat. Speed or no speed, Troy Smith and Ted Ginn are going to run roughshod all over that pathetic secondary.

And you know... the SEC is the greatest blah blah blah talk is getting old. Neither U of M or tOSU scheduled a I-AA team. The Big 10 may have NW, IU, MSU, etc., but the SEC has Kentucky, Ole Miss, their, MSU, etc.

And nobody who is objective can say that Penn State or Wisconsin is any better or worse than Georgia or Alabama.

There's two teams in the SEC which scare the shit of me: LSU and Auburn.

Congrats to Arkansas on a fine season. According to history they played above their heads this year (they're kinda like our Iowa).

But when you play like shit against FSU (okay it's a rivalry game), need a blocked FG to win against SC, and turn in a performance like UF did in their championship game, SEC and more specifically, UF, backers should open up a can of shut the fuck up.

Is the SEC an absolutely great conference with awesome teams and a lot of tradition... absolutely... Do SEC fans exaggerate about its might... hell yes!

As if an annual tour of the sun belt conference and the moon shining 1-AA programs populating their destitute shit hole proves greatness. Come on. Any team who's sole priority when scheduling opponents is to avoid crossing the Mason-Dixon line at all costs is shit in my book. This will be their first game outside of the south since that glorious Osborne inspired pasting Nebraska laid on them in the '95 Fiesta. I hope Meyer's pinko shuffle passes lead to the death of a wide receiver at the hands of some juice monkey with gay acorns populating the starboard side of his helmet. I'm so pissed you can't even imagine. When will the south get over their Antietam and Gettysburg induced paranoia and play a team up north

A year ago today, if you knew we'd be where we are now, would you be OK with it? I would.

On a side note, screw a playoff. College football has the most exciting regular season of any sport by far. Let's keep it that way.

3. Florida has a better record
4. Florida won its conference
5. Florida did not lose its last game of the season

Michigan played "Mr. Nice Guy" again and got screwed.

Remember 1997? Nebraska was campaining for the NC relentlessly, the players, the coaches, the AD, the President, etc. Michigan quietly allowed a split NC.

Now it is 2006, and by taking the high road, we lost a chance for the NC. We should have fought fire with fire and fought like hell for the #2 vote.

Call Meyer a whiner, but he is a whiner that is playing for the NC. Us nice guys will watch the Rose Bowl...yeah...

Anonymous said...

Meyer's quote about not getting watch the Buckeyes in the south just proves how self obsessed the conference is. Wasn't nearly every OSU game in prime time. To the posters who say there should be some more inter-conference scheduling, there is, it's just that the SEC never gets involved.

The SEC has 9 teams in bowl games. How many Big 10 teams are playing in bowls? Answer 7.

Matthew Starr said...

SEC has nine bowl teams because SEC teams love doing the tour of the Citadel, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, and other I-AA teams. That fattens up the non-conf record.

Anonymous said...

Another Texas fan who was rooting for Michigan. Beat USC, and go Florida, because a split title would be good for everybody.

Anonymous said...

hey dipshit matthew starr you can only count a 1-aa win towards going to a bowl once every 4 years. but nice try, i guess all those MAC teams the big 10 schedules are way better.

Anonymous said...

Well, I figured that it might be nice to bring a new argument to the table rather than just post another obscenity laced tirade.

So here it goes: in the past 4 bowl seasons the Big 10 is 8-3 versus SEC opponents in head-to-head bowl games.

You can argue about schedules, rankings and league titles all you want but the only stat that matters is who has walked away with the victory, and right now Florida and SEC fans just don't have the bowl results to merit a legit argument that the SEC is a superior conference.

Maybe your teams can rack up some nice results in the regular season, but why would I believe that Florida has a chance against tOSU when SEC teams just can't back up your talk when it comes to Big 10 - SEC bowl games?

one of the reasons for the big 10 record in bowls against the sec...bc the sec is the only stupid ass conference that doesnt send its teams to a certain bowl based on there finish in conference.

1) Holy crap, was the FOX BCS Selection Show awful. Perhaps the worst episode of television since "Small Wonder" went off the air.

2) Florida's ascendence makes all the other BCS games worse. tOSU/M, USC/LSU, ND/Fla. are all better or more intriguing matchups than the current ones.

3) Michigan did not miss out on the championship game because Lloyd did not advocate more forcefully. If he had been getting quoted during these weeks we have been off, he would have (justifiably) been portrayed as a huge whiner and Michigan's chances would have suffered.

Our best argument was the eyeball test and without eyeballs on us since the 18th (and with Florida playing unimpressive but winning games) we dropped. As Herbstreit (who expressed the pro-UM case very well tonight) explained, if the Michigan-tOSU game was played yesterday with the same result as the game on the 18th, Michigan would be going to the championship game.

3) A strong case can be made for Florida's selection. But those who claim that they are more deserving than Michigan because the Gators won their conference deserve a collective and powerful kick in the nuts by an in-his-prime Ray Guy wearing steel-toed boots.

Can't spell Lloyd without 2 "L's" said...

For all you ignorant pig-humpers who use the argument "Michigan already had their chance, and they lost", I'd like to present 2 items.

1) I wouldn't really call a road game our real chance. Not that Florida stands a snowballs chance in hell of beating the Bucks anyway, but in Columbus it would be a merciless beating.

2) Let's play what-if....What-if Auburn didn't shit the bed against Arkansas? They would gotten the automatic SEC bid into the BCS right, since Florida lost to them? No point in playing Florida-Auburn in the SEC championship again, cuz Florida had their chance and lost.

Look what happens when the SEC plays real opposition non conference. USC 50-14. I wish the SEC would just keep their giant circle jerk private and leave the rest of us alone.

why can't you southern lackeys defend your supposed greatness. It never seems to manifest itself on the field. We all watch your games, you never watch ours. You don't know what your talking about. Come back when you have a point. LSU couldn't even beat a weak Florida team, or a horrible Auburn team with no offense who Wisconsin owned the year before in it's bowl game. The SEC is not that good. Feel Free to prove us wrong though, if you can.

This just in:

Osama bin Laden has been discovered hiding in the US. Sources say that FBI agents found bin Laden in Gainesville, FL under the guise of UF football coach Urban Meyer. In addition to masterminding numerous terrorist attacks worldwide including the 9/11 hijackings, the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, and bombings of two US embassies in Africa, Urban bin Laden-Meyer is believed to have recently played a significant role in fucking over the #2-ranked Michigan Wolverines by pushing for the Gators to jump up two spots in front of Michigan.

Hey just for a second put the shoe on the other foot: what if UM had beaten tOSU in November? how many of you guys would want to have to play them again? how many of you would be on here saying "no way, that's not fair they didn't even win the conference. we already beat them, why do we have to beat them again?" seriously, be honest with yourselves and I think you'd find many of you would say that if UM had beaten tOSU already. look the bottom line is in college football there's no playoff, and so the regular season has to serve as a sort of mini-playoff. if you had your shot to just win one game and then you'd be in the title game, you've gotta do it. if you lose, then that's it, someone else will come along. i agree it's not entirely fair but it is what it is.

run your teams through anyone but C-USA, Sunbelt, and 1-AA and see how they do or how many injuries you have. Michigan and OSU are so much more physical week in and week out. But you wouldn't know since you have tunnel vision as this thread has simply proven. We come with evidence of your faults, you bring your what if you were in our league garbage. Come on, 8-3 in bowl games the last 4 years. Enough said. The big 10 isn't anything special, yet some how they OWN the supposedly great SEC. Weak.

Anonymous said...

Think about this, the OSU fans on here seem to be pretty unanimous in saying we got hosed. It's only the SEC closet dwellers who think Florida is any good. Was it unfair for FSU to play you again in '96? What about every garbage rematch in your championship game. The SEC's hypocrisy about rematches screwed the second best team in the country.

Anonymous said...

UF and LSU both would easily get through a big 10 schedule undefeated except for possibly versus...ohio st. and we'll all find out on january 8th who would win that.

Anonymous said...

From an FSU fan, you guys got hosed big time, and I'm saying this in spite of how much I hate the idea of a rematch. I hope OSU teabags UFag.

Anonymous said...

As a USC fan you guys got jacked. The SEC sucks. The rest of college football needs to get together and fight their media hype. CBS and the SEC is like NBC and Notre Dame. Every time they play outside of the South they get embarrassed. Maybe that's why they never do. Look forward to a traditional Rose Bowl though.

Michigan won a big out of conference game, yes against an over rated ND. But they beat them by more on the road then you were capable of against a weak Vandy (who Michigan owned, out gained by 200 yards), weak Alabama at home, and perennial door mat Kentucky at home. Florida fan's just keep bringing up the myth of the SEC. Florida is in the MNC game due to a 10 point win over a team USC (proven to be weak by the Beavers and UCLA) beat by 36. More then you could manage against lowly Southern Miss. I can't wait to laugh at OSU destroying you, it will be ugly, and it pains me to say it. All the SEC fans do is talk about there athleticism. When has the superior athleticism of the SEC shown up over the past years. The supposedly slow and fat big 10 owns you 8-3 over the last 4 years. You harp on about how over rated Notre Dame is, look in the mirror.

Florida has struggled to break 20 points versus very bad teams like vandy, fsu, south carolina etc and they will do well to hold Ohio State under 40..this game has the potential to be a nebraska/florida type beatdown unless tOSU helps them out

Great game against Vandy...your mid-season 6-point win was more impressive than our week 1, 20-point blowout. Great game against 6-6 Florida State....Great game against I-AA, 2-9 Western Carolina in week 12 (not sure whether that win or Urban's whining won the coaches over). Great game against the other SC (that loss put SC at 5-5). I could go on. Point is, you can't bash our close calls when you had more near embarrassments. And somehow you consider yourself superior to Michigan? Talking won't get us anywhere. Now we wait for Jan. 8 to find out which conference is the best the the land. Lloyd Carr remains quiet again, and again he loses. Hats off to him for not getting caught up in the hype. Florida and their whiny-ass coach is turning into the Notre Dame of the South. Everyone is sick of hearing you talk about how great you are. We will go to California, play in what will be the most-anticipated of all BCS games, and show everyone we know who deserved a shot at OSU the only way we know how...ON THE FIELD. Rematch or not, it would've been the two best teams in the country...the whole point of the BCS.

Id love to see michigay try to play UT, UGA, ARK, LSU and a FSU team who is always up for a big rivalry. UM- 34 point favorite over ball state and barely wins. give it up. start boasting about your chess team or something.

Instead of taking shots at each other, you all should be attacking the BCS system more. As a neutral observer I'm definately in favor of a playoff so this type of garbage doesn't happen. Lay off each others schools. Both UM and UF are deserving teams.

If Ohio State doesn't turn it over this game is going to get ugly.
Chris Leak is a lock to have a few turnovers. If florida loses the turnover battle this game is gonna be way ugly. Oh well, if tOSU is going to win the title vs an sec team then i would prefer they crush them.
I can't beleive how cocky the gators are, i don't think they know what they are in for.

Anonymous said...

I don't see so much bitching here. It's mostly loads of evidence of the SEC being over rated. It's the gator fans who can't bring anything to the table. We watched you limp through your schedule, did you watch us? I doubt it. The SEC has some of the most inept offenses in football this season. The vaunted Florida defense gave up 28 points to a team without a passing game. Jan 8 will be ugly. The SEC's greatness is mythical, much like Notre Dames. They can't prove it on the field, period. Florida fan's have no room to stand with their hypocrisy. The college football world gave you a second chance after blowing a monster first half lead to FSU in '96. Can you blame us for feeling we deserve one as well?

What impressive games has any sec team had out of conference this year? USC 50 Ark 14? what sec team beat any strong out of conf team? the sec is going to be exposed and florida is going to be exhibit A.

It's like if CFL fans came on here and started talking shit about how we couldn't deal with only having 3 downs or the 110 yard field. YOU HAVE NO ELITE WINS VS ANY NON SOUTHERN SCHOOLS. BEATING UP ON 1-AA CHAMPS DOESN"T COUNT.

8-3 big 10 in bowl games vs SEC. There is your evidence. BRING IT SEC, your weak, beating up on your own teams with inflated rankings doesn't prove greatness. Your conferences lack horrid record against anyone but the sun belt, c-usa, 1-AA is proof enough. Name one major win from an SEC team out of Conference other then LSU-Oklahoma (just lucky not to have played USC that year) and you get some respect. At this point this forum is testament to the spinelessness of the SEC. But I guess it's all you have down there, so maybe we shouldn't pop your bubbles. GO BUCKS

Florida has 1 national title ever, just 1. tOSU has 7, mich 11....Florida never even won their own conference until spurrier arrived. Florida's (and I guess the whole SEC minus LSU) couldn't contain Auburn's one dimensional offense with their supposed superior athletes on defense. OSU will have no problem moving the ball and Urban's high school offense (that's all Florida can claim, great high school players) won't trouble the bucks. It will be a sad day, 2 NC in 5 years for the Bucks.

Look, Michigan is a fine squad. But you guys had the opportunity to be undefeated in the palm of your hand. Last game of the season, at OSU and don't try to tell me that you didn't know it would be your only chance. A rematch would TOTALLY invalidate the most hyped and important game in the history of the big rivalry. It would be like it never happened.

Yes, a comparison of the the one loss each team has favors UM. However, in my mind, UM played one good team this year and lost to them (Notre Dame is not a good team). Florida, on the other hand, beat LSU, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Can't spell Lloyd without 2 "L's" said...

Well, I don't really think Tennessee or Arkansas are all that sweet either. Arkansas's Dick (or any other Hog QB, for that matter) wouldn't start anywhere in the Big 10. McFadden is good, yes, but the Hog D made a crappy Florida offense look good.

Anonymous said...

Come on guys. Do you really think Michigan should be in Glendale? That game was already played. I know people talk about the BCS being set up to get the best 2 teams into the championship game. But the game is actually just about deciding who's number 1. Michigan had its shot at OSU. They may clearly be number 2, but that doesn't mean they should get another shot at OSU. I want to see what UF can do.

By the way, I am a huge Michigan fan and an alum. I just love college football as a sport and think it's better this way.

Also, I can't believe that in the span of 2 weeks, Texas went from BCS to Alamo!!

mattathias said...

Urban Meyer is a scumbag. Don't even try to fucking call me a sore loser, any of you Gator fans out there. I was born in Gainesville and was sympathetic to UF until now...and now I'm rooting for my team's archrival!

But I'm not just rooting for OSU to demolish Florida so that all the voters will see how dead wrong they were. I'm rooting for OSU and Wisconsin for deeper reasons. They represent the Midwest and the Big Ten. Here, we don't stoop to the level of those thugs in the Southeast. This is not self-righteousness; this is a fact.

Face it, all you SEC lovers: you will never match us in class, academics, or goddamn playing level of football. The way that Arkansas and Florida played on Saturday night was a disgrace to college football. You don't play as smart or as physical.

The SEC has been at it for years. Touting itself as the country's toughest conference and then throwing pussy fits whenever someone else has the nerve to pose a threat to its supremacy. Phil Fulmer and TN's pig of a governer did it in 1997 and Urban Creyer is following their lead, adapting to the SEC quite well. You're not the toughest conference. The SEC passes itself off as tough because it is composed of 12 evenly mediocre teams. (Remember when Arkansas lost to USC by 36 points...at home??? And USC lost to UCLA!) The SEC is a disgrace to college football and a blight on American sports in general.

1) Love it or hate it, Lloyd Carr is a very ethical coach. He doesn't harass his opponents with drug sniffing dogs, he doesn't recruit or tolerate thugs, and he doesn't pimp himself to pollsters. True, his morals have probably cost him games over the years, but at least he can look himself in the mirror and know he has done the right thing. A part of me wishes Carr had degraded himself by going toe-to-toe with Myers in pandering for votes, because I think Michigan can beat Tosu on a neutral field. But that's life.

2) You can break the "#2 in the BCS" controversy down to one measure: imagine that Michigan is playing Florida on a neutral field somewhere in Texas or California. Also imagine that Islamic terrorists have kidnapped your mother, and the only way to save her is to pick the winner. If you pick the wrong team, your mother's head will be bouncing down the street like a soccer ball..

Who do you pick: Michigan or Florida? Think about it, for Gods' sake, don't you love your mother? Be honest…

Ungar hit the nail on the head. The BCS system is set up to put #1 against #2. Without a playoff, the voters need to be honest with themselves when they vote.

Are you going to put your mothers life in the hands of Florida or Michigan? Sorry Florida, you lose that one.

To make the system better, we know we need a playoff system. The playoff system starts by winning your league, or getting an at-large bid.

What it would look like this year:

Sugar Bowl: Ohio State vs Wake Forest

Orange Bowl: Florida vs Boise State

Sugar Bowl: Michigan vs Louisville

Rose Bowl: USC vs Oklahoma

Sorry ND you suck, and LSU is behind Michigan for the only remaining at-large bid.

Semi-Final Bowl: Doube header at Soldier Field (Lets see how tough you sun belt pussy's really are)

BCS Championship: Honolulu HI

Now that is a system, and it only adds one extra week.
