Psychology of the Buckeye Fan

JT over at The Buckeye Expat put up a great post about the seeming need by Buckeye fans to invade Michigan sites to stir things up. Not just for good-natured ribbing, but for some sort of validation.

Why does a fan of the #1 team need such approval (or would rather stalk a Michigan site than leave comments an OSU site)? JT takes his shot at an answer.

Never tried to stir things up here, but I read this site because it's just plain better than any OSU related site out there.

I am an OSU fan who enjoys visiting sites like this one, mgoblog, EDSBS, etc...

Fact is, on the o-zone where I normally reside, we have talked about every possible intricate detail of OSU that can ever be discussed. Eventually, it's just a big circle jerk with little new insight.

I don't really understand the attitude of fans that have the "why are you here? go bck to your own board!" mentality...I enjoy getting other perspectives about CFB in general, as well as differing opinions other than homer-oriented ones...

I agree, those who go to UM sites merely to argue every perceived slight against OSU are just way too insecure, it always goes back to my "Internet litmus test"- if the poster does not have an ability for self-deprecating humor, they are usually not worth my time...This site, mgoblog, and EDSBS are perfect examples of not taking oneself too seriously, and thus I return again and again...

Franky, I applaud Yost, Benny...etc for allowing anon posters. I don't know if the bloghost would allow you to require folks to use usernames, but if they do, I applaud you guys for allowing anon users.

I think it takes an Ohio expat to come even close to understanding those folks.

As I said yesterday, only half-jokingly, Ohio has endured a thirty-year cycle of reverse Darwinism that leads inexorably to Mike Cooper.

Its pretty simple: If you make provocative posts towards Buckeye fans (see your "Tosu Favorites"), then have a comment section, then Buckeye fans are going to comment. Some less elegantly than others. And people are going to return to see what else you decide to stir up, and the cycle continues.

Are you saying we're not welcome here? Is this the blog posting equivalent of throwing a powdered donut at us?

Folks like Jobu don't mind getting powdered donuts thrown at them. Frankly, they wish more people did (think, "Mmmm donuts"). The only thing is they would eat them and think the people were throwing them out of kindness and not because they couldn't quickly get their hands on something else to throw. By the way - who the hell tailgates with powdered donuts?!?

To put it in perspective:

"Mike Hart is a whining little pussy and how come Pittman doesn't get more respect. He's the better running back. Look at his yards per carry faggots! UM sucks and you are all losers."

vs

"Great game. I was a little surprised by Mike Hart's comments afterwards, but since the question was 'why were you able to run so easily against them?', he was probably venting his emotions. I wonder how Pittman would have responded to the same question? Good luck in your bowl and we'll see you in 365 days."

I only casually read this blog, but following the OSU game, there were 3 of those first comments for every 1 of the second. The Pyschology of the Buckeye Fan isn't about them reading other blogs; that's cool. It's about how they comment, often going insane over the slightest suggestions that the Buckeyes, or any of their players, aren't the greatest team or player ever.

Folks like me, eh? I would love to know just what that entails.

Also, for all the stuff Jim wants to throw out concerning Buckeye civility, his school did give us this little piece of football history.

"It's about how they comment, often going insane over the slightest suggestions that the Buckeyes, or any of their players, aren't the greatest team or player ever."

You're right about that. And I don't get it. Especially since its not like we're without criticism towards certain Buckeye players when talking amongst ourselves.

I normally would defend OSU fans until I saw this footage AFTER we won - disgusting

An equally excellent question is why a Michigan blog, run by two graduates of the finest educational institution west of Case Western and east of U. Chicago, would devote half its space to baiting OSU fans. A follow-up question for further research might be "what do they expect?"

DevilGrad said...

Some would argue that Benny and Yost are just master baiters, but, as Carl Monday has demonstrated to us all, Buckeye fans are even better at that.

Self-sufficiency is an underrated virtue.

devilgrad,

For every Carl Monday reference, OSU fans just have to mention Larry Harrison. A current (at the time) Michigan player wacking off on someone's front porch ALWAYS trumps a person wearing a Buckeye shirt wacking off in the library.

always

Anon 11:33,

Interesting how relaying to folks the classless treatment we received in C-bus is "baiting."

Hear no evil, see no evil is the way to go, huh?

You're right, that's not "baiting," that's called "being a pompous tool." Like jobu said earlier, the majority of your "tOSU favorites" are excellent examples of what I'd call "baiting."

Oh Yeah said...

Wow...you sure devote a lot of time thinking about us! Thanks!

I got a question!!!!!!!!Why do people from UM act so elitist and condescending????? Why do they continue to bitch and moan when people offer different views and practice different beliefs about a subject?????

Andy said...

It only took 17 comments for someone to pull the "elitist" card. Pretty good...
