If you've heard about it but haven't seen it, here is MSU coach John L. Smith slapping himself during his post-game press conference following the Spartans' inexplicable loss to Illinois last weekend.

strange indeed!!
looking back on John L., suppose there could be a hint of some mental instability - that's not said in a joking manner either.
just a weird dude, is all.
Judging from the way he coaches, he should have slapped himself before the game.
I love the team is more concerned about protecting their fied from a flag plant than oh I don't know ..... maybe winning the game.
SPARTY ON!!
That fruitloop is definitely losing his grip. Though I have to disagree with your title. "John L. Smith Can't Even Kick His Own Ass" seems to fit much better considering the candidate.
The first rule of fight club is "you don't talk about fight club".
Did he blame the other players for getting slapped?
Definitely a lithium moment. Does anyone know if the slap was the end of the press conference? Because if there's more of this out there somewhere, I want to see it.
When Bobby Knight does this sort of thing, you know he's just being mean to the reporters in the room.
But this was different. He was all humble and awshucks one moment and then it was like a breaker tripped in his head. Watch his eyes!
Classic John L.
Wow...
Michigan State: Where coaches go to die. I can only imagine the deal Saban had to work out with the devil to go from East Lansing to LSU and not the funny farm.
Possessed by the spirit of Woody Hayes!
Just tossing this out into rumor-land: I know a guy whose son goes to Michigan State, and according to him (insert Ferris-Bueller-at-31-Flavors-last-night disclaimer), the decision has already been made to fire John L., Michigan will be his last game, and MSU will promote an assitant to interim status for the rest of the year.
Take it for what you paid for it...
oh good..charlie weis didn't have enough motivation for next year...
I bet Larry Coker is sending John L. Smith a thank you card this week. Larry had the hottest seat in the country two weeks ago. John L. has deflected the media attention away from him and probably saved his job.
perhaps we could get John L. some of that Prozac water from C-bus???
If anything, you have to laugh at his "slap" in the face of Charlie Weis, which was obviously the intended reference. Lack of coaching aside, JLS is worth a few laughs every year. Maybe we can enjoy them in another team's press conference next fall.
John L. really is Fraser Babineaux!
I don't know, man. It' looks like John L. could go postal at any minute.
I feel bad for him, the MSU players and the Spartan fans.
I expect the UM-MSU game to be a great one. Far worse Michigan State Spartan football teams have beaten Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Couple that with Saturdays Minneaocre performance by Michigan... Any given Saturday, anything can happen.
Hope Carr and the boys remember that.
Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself?
Is there a real possibility of a Charlie Bauman type of meltdown in the next few weeks? If Leon Hall pulls in an interception, will John L. unleash the same fury on him that he did on his own mug?
This is a whole new level of bizarre-o sado-masochism. Go Sparty!
markus...
"Far worse Michigan State Spartan football teams have beaten Michigan in Ann Arbor."
I realize it's just thrown around that this is true, but it really isn't. MSU only has 3 wins in Ann Arbor in the last 40 years.
1990 - MSU finished 8-3-1 in a 4 way tie for first in the Big Ten
1984 - MSU finished 6-6, but so did the worst Michigan team since Bo took over
1978 - MSU finished 8-3
That's it since the 1960s and Duffy Daugherty. Far worse MSU teams than this have not won in Ann Arbor, but they have gotten their doors blown off.
