What did you just call me?!

Call them USC. Call them the Trojans. Hell, call them Tailback U.

Just don't call them Southern Cal.

According to Bruins Nation, (via The Sporting News and Wiki) USC is so opposed to that moniker, the school's sports information department specifically requests in every media guide that the school not be referred to as "Southern Cal" in order to avoid association with the University of California, Berkeley (known as "Cal").

Wow. Touchy, touchy.

Well, I have one thing to say to any Trojan fans reading this...

"Southern Cal! Southern Cal! Southern Cal! Southern Cal!"

Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nuh!

After that showing in Tennessee, who the hell would want to be associated with Berkeley?

I suspect this is a case of Trojans being extra-sensitive...

extra sensitive Trojans?
now there's an idea....

It is a funny thing when a site that favors UCLA points this out. UCLA was originally named the Southern branch of the University of California. But according to the most recent rankings conducted by US News, Stanford, Berkeley and UCLA are ranked higher than USC. Despite all their athletic accomplishments it is still the fourth best PAC-10 school in California. I sense an inferiority complex from USC.

Too funny. Of course, here in NorCal, we just call them U$C!

Have they considered THE Southern Cal?

Crabapple Buck said...

Thank God I only pull for them once a year. Care to guess when?

Being from northern California myself I enjoy calling them the University for Spoiled Children.

Anon,

You sound like the typical fan who, when listening to a game called by Brent Musberger always says, "Do you hear him?! He hates our team"...no matter who your team is. And if you were cheering for the other side, you'd still say the same thing.

We don't favor UCLA or USC. We have to dog in that hunt, so to speak.

Funny, when the the whole LSU billboard thing was going down and we ripped on those putting it up, we were called a "pro USC" site. Now we're pro UCLA.

Classic.

I did not intend to imply that this site is a pro-UCLA site I meant Bruinsnation is a pro-UCLA site. I should have been more specific and I apologize for the confusion I caused.

Anon IV,

Ahhhh. No worries.

As a USC Alum I have always hated being referred to as Southern Cal, no one who is associated with or attends the university calls it that. South Carolina is always trying to jack USC. Yes USC is ranked lower than UCLA or Cal (One whole spot re UCLA). The only numbers that matter regarding UCLA are 66 - 19.

I actually don't mind the Southern Cal reference. I hear a lot of older alums and football fans in general refer to SC that way. The weird part is, they produce merchandise with that name in order to retain trademark rights.

This is not new. USC has made this request for at least 10 years. I don't see what the issue is myself. As was stated above the University even prints shirts with Southern Cal on them.

RuinsNation is a bunch of hacks who have no accomplishments on the field to talk about so they have to make crap up about SC. Call us what you want, but come December you'll be screaming Daddy once again Ruin fans.

I do like THE University of Southern California though. It makes sense given the fact that USC is the only footbal team in So. Cal.

South Carolina was created before Southern California. So it is not "always trying to jack" the USC initials.

Southern Cal fans, which is it? Do you want USC or SC or tUSC or what? Can't have your fucking cake and eat it too.

The name University of Southern California is older than the name University of South Carolina. Southern California was founded in 1880. South Carolina was called South Carolina College until 1906. Southern California has 26 years of seniority for the name USC. South Carolina has neither a strong claim to "USC" nor to "Carolina" despite their best efforts. Furthermore, Southern California is forced to register and use the trademark "Southern Cal" so that it does not lapse, giving every bootlegger with a T-shirt press the right to make "Southern Cal" T-shirts and such.

We have the claim to "Michigan"

Nobody else does.

That's all I care about.

How about FUSC- how's that? said...

Anon 12:36 - There, you just settled it. You registered the trademark, "Southern Cal" so that's your name. So maybe now you can quit the grasp for media coverage since Leinert and Bush left and you're no longer the media darlings you thoguht you once were. Don't like the name, "Southern Cal", then change your university name, or change the name of the State. Personally, I think you give the name "Southern" a bad name anyway. As far as the name USC goes, that's just Southern Cal trying to claim everything. I don't see Michigan trying to make sure Missou or Montana never uses UofM or UM. Maybe the OSU's OK State and tOSU duke it for the rights to that acronym, but I haven't seen it.

I did see Ohio State sue (not sure how far it went) Ohio University about school names. Funny as that seems

FYI, USC has been saying this for about 15 years or so now. It's not new.

What is new is that someone has bothered to bring it up.

Welcome to college football!

Anonymous said...

Wow alot of USC hatred. I stand by my trying to jack statement. South Carolina is welcome to Southern Car, So Car, or 'th Carolina, but I think UNC might take issue with Carolina. Why don't we all agree to call them the cocks, maybe both schools were made for each other what with the odd synchronicity of nicknames.

Anonymous said...

Nobody calls either the states of North Carolina or South Carolina as "Car". Lots (ok, millions) of people refer to the state of California as "Cal". If you're going to bother trying to make a point, well just stop and decide against it. You'll rapidly run out of good opportunities to keep your mouth shut. Maybe write "AHNOLD" and ask him to change the name of the state, Northern Baja works.

Anonymous IV said...

How about the University of Southern Alta California. That way the acronym is USAC. After all Alta California is what California used to be called to distinguish it from Baja California and Baja California del Sur.

Anon 3:05 I see that its impossible to argue with such a topical mind. Arnold jokes?, you must have killed in 2004. Was OJ just a little too fresh?

Anonymous said...

mmm.... fresh OJ...

For the sad fellow who thinks that USC is "one-spot" below UCLA on some scholastic rankings, um, no. UCLA was named one of the top 25 Universities in the world by the Times of London, and listed among the "20 'New' Ivy League schools in America" by US News. So was Michigan.

USC? Not so much. Not even close. Nice try.

JustDaFactsMa'am said...

Speaking of topical minds, last I checked, Arnold was still your guv'nor. Can't be much fresher than that.

Back to football... looks like an exciting week around the country. Here's to Big Blue, Husker, War Eagle, and as much as I hate to say it, Vol victories.

Anonymous said...

danny boy -- Look at the US News and world report college rankings, UCLA comes in at #26, and USC tied #27 with UNC. In my book that's one spot on the most commonly used listing. That's the one I was referring to, Don't like it? Take it up with US News.

Anonymous said...

that isn't scholastic rankings, that is football players arrested last season.

Most SC fans don't mind the "Southern Cal" thing. We've been Southern CAl for a long time. Hell, the bookstore sells stuff that says "Southern Cal".

I have no idea what got up the AD's butt on that one.
