A few years ago, a break like that and they would have put the horse down right on the track....
Actually, they wouldn't have to put him down at the track, his damage was so severe that most horses wouldn't have survived this at all for more than a short period of time. There are major circulation issues that arise with a break like this.
And I just want to comment on horse racing in general. I'm no animal rights activist but I think the entire horse racing industry can be equated to cruel and unusual punishment to horses. This happens to horses all the time, we only hear about the famous ones. I just don't agree with the entire industry, from the gambling to making these horses run around a track to the amusement of thousands of drunken, belly-dunlopping, 50 year has been's. Down with the Derby!

Casey S that is what horses are for. They run and if some people gamble on them then fine. It's only an animal by the way. As far as cruel and unusual punishment what would you suggest we do with horses? We have cars now so their use has changed to racing for entertainment.
