The Eyes of Texas (and MZone Readers) are Upon Her

SI On Campus recently posted a Q&A with Texas cheerleader Mia Adams. As expected, the interview is less revealing than a Dateline investigation. However, there were a couple of things that were interesting.

First, she claims the cheerleaders' biggest rival at Texas is Texas Tech. There must be a cosmopolitan capitol vs. dusty outpost thing going on among the cheerleaders because, even though the Red Raiders have been better in football lately, I'd think Longhorns fans consider Oklahoma and Texas A&M much bigger rivals.

Second, she says the best way to pick up a cheerleader is to "Be one of those enthusiastic fans and just go crazy." Based on personal experience of being one of those enthusiastic, crazy fans, I have to say nothing could be further from the truth. Sure, a cheerleader might smile at you during the game and encourage you to keep cheering, but once the game is over they won't talk to you or return your calls, and they'll pretend not to notice you as you're camped outside their apartment or when you "bump into them" after every one of their classes. They'll sometimes even go so far as to get a court order to keep you 250 feet away from them. Not that it's ever happened to me. I will say that her standard rejection line of "Go Texas" would be nicest thing I'd ever heard while getting shot down.

Finally, Ms. Adams admits that after performing a cheer for a fan, she received a free ice cream. Wouldn't that be in violation of NCAA rules? Could this be the first cheerleader entry in the Fulmer Cup?

What should be remembered is that A&M's cheerleaders are guys dressed up like hospital orderlies (or house painters, I can never tell which) and OU's cheerleaders are, well, from Oklahoma. It's no surprise that the Tech cheerleaders are the biggest rivals when given those other options...

As a Texas grad, I must say that I am pretty embarrassed. Even the middle school cheerleaders in Texas could correctly identify university rivals. There is an exception, however. Tech's biggest rival would have to be Texas, but the opposite is not true. So I am going to assume that she grew up somewhere close to Lubbock and was inundated with all sorts of media claiming that Texas was Tech's big rival. She was just never told that Tech was Texas' big rival. Poor Red Raiders.

Sorry ...
that Tech wasn't Texas' big rival.

Cheerleading is not under the NCAA, therefore, there should be no points given to Texas for the Fulmer Cup...

Don't ask why I know this

actually OU's cheerleaders are recruited from Texas....they get paid....like the rest of their players

Fulmer Cup points? It depends on the manner in which she ate said ice cream cone.

If it looked like what's playing in our imagination, then she earns no points--but gains our eternal admiration.

Read the comment more carefully and you will notice that Tech is Texas' biggest rival from a CHEERLEADING standpoint. a&m doesn't send their Yell Leaders to nationals and there isn't enough grease in the state of Oklahoma for them to be competitive.

Tech and Texas duke it out every year.

True, but if you read the previous sentence she indicates that their cheerleading rivalries following the rivalries of their football team. Oh well, daddies money can buy you an education, but it still can't buy you a brain. Oh well, I bet she can still lick the hell out of an ice cream cone. I'm just not sure where people get those stereotypes about cheerleaders.

As a Texas grad, I'd have to say that the UT / Tech matchup has been a hell of a lot more competitive over the past decade or more than the UT / A&M matchup. The Aggies have fallen further into suckdom, while Tech's put together a pretty nice program. Tech also has some of the finest looking co-eds in the Big 12, so that's always a perk when playing them. Aggies...well...let's just say they grow'em big.

I must have missed something. She was not trying to determine which school was the biggest rival of the Univ. of Texas, but rather simply stating which cheerleading squad the Texas Cheerleaders had their own rivalry with.

Her words: "But yes, we have rivalries -- they follow the football team loyalties. Texas Tech is our biggest rival, though it doesn't really show on the field because it's not like we (the cheerleaders) are competing head to head with each other."

Seems pretty simple to me. I dont understand all the confusion.

As for their rivalries following the football teams loyalties; well, I guess it does. They can't really choose Texas A&M, as the Aggies don't have any cheerleaders. That leaves them with OU and Texas Tech (at least for conference teams that they play every year, and have been playing for a long time). They have simply opted for the Tech girls.

Oh, and as for the "Scoreboard, bitches" comment. I don't get it either. I have figured out that it means they defeated your time in a game (or maybe even own a series), but it could quite possibly be the most ignorant sounding thing in the world.

I am not one to Police Grammar on the Internet, but it is pretty brutal.

Speaking of Texas Tech, their fans love the phrase "We got scoreboard!" Talk about ignorant! That makes this poor Texas Cheerleader look like a Rhodes Scholar.

Oh well, now you know what it is like to deal with Longhorns and Raiders on a daily basis. The Raiders are striving for the "worst fans" trophy, while Texas students are making a great run at the "I am so arrogant, and have no reason to be" award.

Later...
