March Badness

I should have known it would be a mostly unsatisfying evening when I found out the Wolverine hoops team would be taking on a beer that only Wangs would drink.

The game got off to a bad start for several reasons. First, the broadcast was relegated to ESPN2 so that the mother ship could broadcast a women's tournament game. Boy, has our program sunk to new depths. Second, Michigan was wearing those awful white uniforms with the siver material at the shoulder. Third, Amaker's group soon found themselves down 21-14. But the most uninspired 10-0 run put the Wolverines up for good, thanks to 20 straight missed shots by ODU. Finally, the crowd was actually for Old Dominion. Wait, isn't this game being played in Ann Arbor East, otherwise known as New York? Were all the U of M alums in too big of a hurry to head back to Jericho, Roslyn, and Merrick to support the Wolverines in their seemingly annual trip to the NIT Final Four?

Michigan played solid for the last 30 minutes of the game and ran away with a 66-43 victory. Of course that's frustrating in and of itself, for it shows how this team could have been much better and should have been a first or second round loser in the NCAA tournament, which would have been much more satisfying.

So the Wolverines try to win their second NIT in three years on Thursday night against South Carolina who beat Louisville. Finally, Michigan fans can get revenge for George Rogers and the Fire Ant defense beating Bo and the Boys back in 1980.

I was at the NIT last night. UM fans are quite a boring group. South Carolina had less fans, two lonely cheerleaders, and they were much louder. There are so many UM alums in NY and I think they did take the train to Long Island even braving the fire on the tracks last night. UM fans need to get off their asses and into the arena on Thursday.

"UM fans are quite a boring group."

Jeff - never has a truer statement been made on this blog.

Of course, it is the frickin' NIT! Which, um, we won two years ago and it was supposed to be a springboard to something. We have a team loaded with upper classman. And a coach who once played lacross, or danced at a lacross party, at Duke or something which means he's an expert on all things basketball accoring to Billy "Boat" Martin.
It has been 5 years since the savior Tommy "I ain't Coach K" Amaker has been at the helm and what do we frickin' have to show for it - a 9 game post-season winning streak in the NIT. Who cares!!!!

Of course, I watched every minute of the game, and cheered (even though I was alone) at the tv louder than those M "fans" at the game.

For the record Yost, Old Dominion is more of a ladies beer. I'm a Bud man. But I'm sure you'd like it.

Wangs, it was me, Benny, who created this post. And I didn't think it mattered which gender favored a certain beer. As long as it was on super special at Kroger's, you'd drink it.

Bennie - you busted me. The real reason I don't drink Old Dominion is because it costs too much. And it doesn't come in 40 ouncers.

And the only reason I drink Bud now is because I can't find Old Milwaukee, Goebel, Strohs, or Colt 45 double deuces around here.

I was agreeing with the original post about how no Long Islanders showed up. I'm from Jersey and none of my people showed up either. I'd say there were about 1,000 or so people wearing UM gear. As for beer, I like Molson Ice.......It'll Get You Drunk.

"Molson Ice.......It'll Get You Drunk."

I remember that was their ad campaign slogan back when the beer was introduced.

For big games, I would splurge on Molson Blue. I assumed it was named by some Michigan grad/drop-out so that had to be good karma.

My favorite beer slogan was Lando Calrission, or whatever his name is, cracking open a bottle of Colt 45 as a hot chick walked into his condo/bedroom and he'd say: "Colt 45, it works every time."

Sadly, I discovered that it was another example of false advertising.

First, gotta go with the Miller Lite.

Second, Wangs are you referring to Labatt's Blue? Better be careful or those beady eyed Canadians will come after you.

Third, a wins a win. While I'm still disappointed we didn't make the NCAA's, I'll still take watching them play late in March, NIT or otherwise.

I am curious to see if Beverly commits before buying stock in Ann Arbor torch & pitchfork co.

UM Chicago - you are right. Labatt's "Go" Blue. I was drunk when I wrote the earlier comment.

I'm sure the Canadiens wouldn't get upset. It's not like I called Gretzky's wife a crook, or something. They have got to be the friendliest people on the planet.

And brother, I'll watch too. And cheer loudly even though I'll be out of ear shot of all other humans. And be pissed if we lose to the Game Cocks.

Wangs -

Excellent. I consider this matter settled.

As for the yelling to no one in particular, I'll be doing the same thing. I did a write up on it after the ND game. I've heard the following from my wife during the last four games:

"You're in the NIT, jackass. Stop yelling."
"You're going to give yourself a heart attack."
"What the hell is the matter with you?"
"Ooo! Friends is on. Can I change the channel?"

Oh well. Go Blue.

One positive from last night: a young woman with a striking resemblence to Meadow Soprano passed by my section at MSG. I think it was her as did most of the people near me. If it was her, she's definitely much hotter in person.

Was it just me, or did it seem like Courtney Sims finally start eating his wheaties? It is about time he started making himself useful. He seems so wimpy half the time that I think my 13 old daughter could take him.
