First Onepeat, Now FiascoBowl: Dumb & Dumber

Stupidity is sweeping the Internet.

First there were the Onepeat idiots raising over $10,000 to put a billboard up near the USC campus in an attempt to "prove" the Trojans didn't win half of the 2003 National Title. Now some Miami morons, "inspired" by the Onepeat crew, are raising money for their own billboard claiming Ohio State wasn't really the 2002 National Champion. Instead, at their FiascoBowl.org site, they insist the Miami Hurricanes - the team Ohio State beat in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl in the BCS Championship game - are the true National Champions that year.

Huh?

Yep, these "fans" claim that, if not for the questionable pass interference call against Miami on 4th down during the first overtime, the game would have been over and Miami would have - and should have - won. Thus, to "right this wrong," they intend to erect a billboard in Columbus to coincide with Buckeye spring practice.

Folks, I know we take a humorous bent to college football on this site but we wish we were kidding here. Because this new "trend" of college football fans trying to rewrite history by pissing away thousands of dollars on billboards when they don't like the outcome on the field is asinine.

And where does it all end?

Obviously, Colorado's 1990 title, with its 5th down and all, is billboard-worthy. Georgia Tech fans should already be renting space in Boulder. Florida State should claim a couple titles from the '90s. Their teams were always the best, only their kickers were second rate so get a billboard, baby! Or perhaps, Nebraska fans should use the same twisted, revisionist logic like these fans of historical fiction in order to reclaim the 1983 National Title back from Miami when #1 ranked Nebraska only had to kick an extra point to tie the game up with :48 seconds left in order to win the title. Most folks agree the Huskers were the better team. So why not put up a billboard in south Florida to "prove" it?

Hell, why even play the games? Instead, let's just crown the national champion based on the school and its fans that can put up the most billboards.

Enough already.

Look, if you're a regular reader of the M Zone, you know we're not the biggest supporters of Tosu. If you doubt it, check the "Tosu Favorites" column along the left side of this site. Need more proof? Ok. "Hey, Bucks, nice basketball game Sunday."

But the fact is, as much as it pains me to say it, we support the Bucks 100% on this one. Ohio State is the undisputed 2002 National Champion. Period. End of discussion. And all the billboards in the world won't change that.

To top it off, the pictures on the fiascobowl web site seem to do more to "prove" interference than they do to "prove" the wrong call was made! (Tell the Miami DB to turn his head and play the ball, then you can cry - not that it'll do any good). As I remember, it was a very close call on film. The stills do more to vindicate the ref than the film ever did.

Anonymous said...

my god, you guys have some time on your hands.

Anonymous said...

There is little similarity in the arguments, even if both have the same ends.

LSU has a legitimate gripe.

Miami are just crying like children.

Anonymous said...

LSU won the championship that all major schools agreed would decide the champion.

Don't sign the BCS contract if you're not going to abide by its stipulations, even when the outcomes aren't what you want.

Matt Leinert on the BCS:

2003: Wears T-shirt on TV throughout bowl and offseason that says, "F*CK the BCS."

2004: On interview says, "Yeah, I feel a little bad for Auburn, but you know we agreed to the system. Sometimes you just don't win in the system."

2005: "We're still the better team."

Anonymous said...

tOSU isn't the national champion according to your logic. Dunkell, Matthews, and Sagarin gave their paper titles, like the AP title now, to USC.

http://www.ncaa.org/champadmin/ia_football_past_champs.html

Notice that on the page the BCS is in bold and distinguished from the Coaches Title.

Anonymous said...

If anything, you should compare the Miami fans to USC fans who claim a championship in 2003 since their team didn't even play in the championship game.

Benny Friedman said...

Even though this is a ridiculous idea, I hope they get the money and go through with it. Could you imagine the violence this would wreak in Columbus? I doubt the Miami guys would even be able to find billboard workers to put up the thing. And I'm sure the police in Columbus would look the other way as the board was defamed, defiled, and ultimately brought down.

Yost said...

LOL, Look how upset the LSU fans who support Onepeat are here? Ha! Doesn't putting up a billboard make Miami right, too?

Anonymous said...

Right?

LSU fans don't think they're "right" because of the billboard.

They think they're right because they were the best team from 2003 that proved it on the field and won the national championship game under the rules that all the major schools, including USC, agreed to.

Yost said...

Correction, Anon. They won exactly HALF of a national championship that year. Next.

Anonymous said...

1998 Tennessee
1999 FSU
2000 Oklahoma
2001 Miami
2002 Ohio State
2003 LSU
2004 USC
2005 Texas

Saying that LSU only won half of the national championship is like saying Al Gore won the 2000 Presidential election because he won the popular vote.

We have a system in place. You don't want to abide by its rules, don't sign the contract.

Yost said...

Anon,

Just b/c you're posting as "Anon" and not putting up the link we delete each time you leave it doesn't mean we don't know you're the same LSUoverUSC idiot.

THEonlyrelevantprogram said...

wow, yost, being a little harsh huh? Coming from a guy still living in his parents basement, considering all the time you have on this blog.

Benny Friedman said...

THE, Yost moved out of his parents basement years ago. He's now living in their garage. So I think you owe him an apology.

Yost said...

Doh! Boy, you got me. Burned.

"Just a minute, mom. Be right up."

Gotta go.

The system people talk about only produces a BCS champion, not a consenssus or one and only NCAA champion. Until there is a playoff, there will be two champs from time to time. USC does abide by the BCS agreement. They recognize LSU as the 2003 BCS champ. Shoot, the BCS even calls 03 a "split decision". Check it out for yourself. Don't you think they would have liked to claim success?

theonlyrelvevantprogram said...

Great, they both split it. New Poll: Which you you rather have, AP or BCS championship?

Anonymous said...

the AP championship of course.

Kirk Herbstreit said...

Speaking for all of ESPN, I'd have to agree. The AP championship is the only relevant one. Furthermore, USC is the best college football team......hell, they are the best team in the history of sports. Pro, College, high school......Men's, Women's.....even internationally, they are the best team that has ever been assembled. Matt Leinhart was right. They are clearly the better team than Texas even though they lost in the Rose Bowl. We should just induct them all into the hall of fame now. Yes, even the towel boys.

Herbstreit out.

wds4usc said...

Hmmm. Maybe my comments on the March 15 "Onepete Mountain" story were right after all. I just can't believe the ignorance and the wretchedly dishonest attempts to re-write history. I guess if they just close their eyes it'll all end up the way they wish it to be, the facts be damned.....

Casey S said...

I have to admit that not all LSU fans are idiots. I was just at a wing restarant here in so. cal, sitting at a bar watching LSU play in the tourney and an LSU fan came and sat right next to me (accent and all)...

We had a good talk, and obviously I was wearing my USC hat. I didn't want to bring up the idiotic billboard, so he did. He apologized for you Onepeat morons and we went on to congragulate eachother on 2003.

then we kicked back, watched LSU win the bball game and drank a few brews together.

Maybe moving out of the bog and into Southern California cleared this guys cloudy head or something, but he was actually a great guy.

Onepeat, fiascobowl, I fart in your general direction.

Anonymous said...

LSU fans are so embarrassing.

Dezzi13 said...

"The NCAA does not conduct a national championship in Division I-A football and is not involved in the selection process."

From www.ncaa.org .... In my eyes, no one wins a NC in football!

wds4usc said...

Isn't that fool at "lsuoverusc" just the most pleasant guy you'd ever meet? You should see the lies, distortions and half truths polluting that site. It's not really worth it except for the humor (and pathos) of it all! When someone on there questions whether or not the PRESIDENT of the Coaches' Association (who admits to the split title) is really a "valid" spokesperson for that group you know you're in a realm of abject denial.

Anonymous said...

WHich would I want, AP or BCS? You seemed to have conveniently left out "Both the AP and BCS (in the same year)" In order I would choose 1- AP and BCS (same year), 2- BCS only, and then 3- AP only.. Seems LSU was unable to secure both in the same year. Don't let your purpple and gold glases fool you--you would wish the same.

Bouj said...

EXACTLY, Dezzi13. That's why all the talking heads call it the "mythical National Championship".

Kirk Herbstreit said...

Haha. I love getting all these USC fans in an uproar. Unfortunately for the dumb southerners, I don't pull for the SEC. I've never had a problem with LSU, but they are in the SEC so.........I can't root for them. Nice to see you bandwagon SoCal fans getting in an uproar though thinking I'm an LSU fan. HA! Not WDS4usc though. I know he isn't bandwagon. All the rest though, go join SnoopDog and cheer on the 2nd most bandwagon fan laden school. (2nd behind Notre Dame.) Pathetic.

MiketheTiger said...

I really wasn't going to respond because all this is nonsense but to Anonymous 11:19, the person who asked if you would rather have the(AP or BSC championship) wasn't an LSU fan like you suggested ("Don't let your purple and gold glasses fool you.") We don't call ourselves "the" anything. It's nice to know that whenever any other fanbase critiques USC, you automatically think of us. I'm touched. I'll just kill ya with kindness then. Good luck next year pal.

MiketheTiger said...

And wds4usc, I'm expecting you to keep me posted on how our boy Booty is doing.

Anonymous said...

Please MikeTheTiger--wrong again. Your post proved yourself wrong. Next you will say you are not an LSU fan. Check any LSU message board and then an SC board. See how many threads on LSU boards are SC related, then check see how many on SC boards are LSU related. You will see that it is the LSU fans who cannot seem to get USC out of their heads. They even realize that it was becoming obsessional. Until LSU BB started winning, there were at least 5 threads per day about USC on tigerdroppings.com--even regular posters there made note of it.

Anonymous said...

Actually it's the USC fans who are obsessed with this issue. I visit WeAreSC.com and almost everyday there is a new thread that is anti-LSU and there are many anti-LSU posters there that speak negatively of LSU several times a day. I also found it mildly amusing when the most popular thread on that board in the past six months was a thread about suing LSU fans for putting up that dumb billboard.

LSU won the BCS, Coaches Poll, and most of the other championships in 2003. USC won the AP. It's a split, but more like a 10 to 1 split. LSU's also right about the contract stuff.

wds4usc said...

Mike, I'll watch Booty closely. I really think he's gonna be a star, especially with his band of receivers. With Sanchez really giving him a battle I think he'll be ready and battle-tested out of spring practice. I also agree that there are a lot of bandwagoners when a program wins: you always want fans but I admit I have a problem with "subway" alums who come and go for the wrong reasons or who support only part of the athletic program ("love the football team but I like another school's basketball team"). I appreciate your comments. And for the last anonymous, the contract issue has been covered as nauseum--the contract NEVER excluded any other selector; it only authorized the Coaches' poll to act and vote as they did but placed no restrictions on the AP or recognition of it.

wds4usc said...

For Yost and all of the Michigan guys (and gals) I agree with your take on tOSU. What's fair is fair and they beat Miami. But on the subject of NC's I do have an historical question: I've done some research on past champs and I know USC and Michigan proudly (and properly) count the Dickenson champions. I thusly note that Notre Dame is the only school to NOT count one--1938. Is this out of humility or a disagreement with the selection (they were fifth in the AP). Also, I have spoken with some ND fans and they question not winning in 1919 and 1953. I understand 1953 might have been due to some type of ND backlash. It is interesting in that they did not win UPI or AP but won everything else and in a sense was a true consensus champ but thay don't recognize that year either. While they are our rivals, I believe in honoring the athletes for their efforts and I just wanted another take on this so what better place than the M Zone?! Thanks!!!

Yost,
as much as i enjoyed laughing at the fiascobowl.com post, can i suggest you not bring the onepeat thing again? i know it's your site, but the lsu/usc lunatic fringe must just cruise the net looking for any place to argue this nonsense and always seem to end up here. i think it's beginning to hurt property values.

maybe we could come up w/ a code word for "onepeat"?? maybe "taepeno" instead? from the level of the conversation, i'm guessing most of these idiots struggle to spell forward- backwards would tire out there lips.

as for the original post, the really ironic thing is that had the shoes been on the other foot- miami had won because of a questionable call- tosu fans would have invented the "onepeat" concept and had a website up before dawn the next day.

btw- they ever pull it off- i'll drive by campus and get a pic for you.

eddie, eddie said...

I have more posts on onepeat.com then anybody else, until I was recently banned - my user name is "M Go Blow" - I have already let you guys know I am an Ohio St fan - new around here. I was banned because I kept bringing up the people on tigerdroppings.net who were embarassed about the billboard and weren't happy that the rest of the country refers to LSU fans as morons.

Regarding the controversy, onepeat.bog has the perfect discription of this - the BCS is perscriptive, not descriptive.

Regarding the 2002 game, obviouslly I am biased, but here is my take. First of all, that was a very controversial call - I can understand why Miami fans were upset. But, there are a lot of controversial calls and no calls in games. For instance, in that very same game, before Miami kicked the field goal to send it to overtime, Ohio State had a third down. The Ohio State reciver not only caught the ball for a first down, but was interfered with too. The call was not made, and they called the reciver out. If Ohio State had gotten a first down there, the game would of been over.

As someone new to the college football internet blogesphere, I am beginning to learn that most hard core college fans are idiots.

E2,

Some people do get so passionate, reason goes right out the window...along with wallet contents to pay for useless billboards.

Anonymous said...

Yost, your sense of humor sucks. These boards are nothing more than hilarious college rivalry. Get off your momma's teat and get yourself a beer.

Yost said...

Anon,

Yeah, spending $12K on a billboard that is already down that nobody even cared about when it was up is just really clever college hijinks. Ba-hardy-har-har-har.

And then doing it again for another, even older, game is even funnier. Ouch. Hold on, my side hurts from laughing.

Hey, dipshit, read the Onepeat page sometime. Those morons are serious as heart attacks about this crap. THAT is why it's so not funny.

Anonymous said...

Yost, this is Steve. I'm here to tell you we're definitely NOT "serious as heart attacks". We were very serious in reaching our goal and erecting the board...but the entire thing was done in good fun. We obviously believe that LSU was the only champion in 2003; however, we clearly had no chance of changing the "record books" with our campaign. We just presented some simple facts about who won the last 3 National Championship games.

The rest of your site is friggin great...but your shots at onepeat (while very funny) are misguided. That being said, you're entitled to your opinion...and we appreciate the traffic you direct our way.

eddie, eddie said...

Steve,

Real slowly...the reason sites like this have such great material in regards to the onepeat issue is that you might believe that LSU won the only national championship in 2003, you might believe John Kerry is the POTUS & you might believe that your 450 supporters mean the whole nation is behind you, but those of us in the real world like to deal with things like facts n stuff. So congratulations on letting the rest of the world that LSU fans are a bunch of morons - even though the majority of LSU fans don't think like you. And enjoy your association with Miami trying to claim the 2002 national championship and Brokeback Mountain tying to claim the Oscar!

Anonymous said...

Clarification to Anonymous (1:38 PM). LSU won the "BCS" championship game. Clearly the record books show there are two champions that year. Again, don't you think the BCS would have liked to claim success? If they could have, the BCS would not have called 03 a "split decision". Also, being "split" has nothing to do with the AP being part of the BCS (as it was in 03). It has to do with the AP being recognized a a major org that awards a title.

Actually, the BCS does not award a title. As I am sure most of you know, the coaches/USA Today does that (see the "crystal" trophy). That is exactly why the BCS had an agreement for the coaches to vote for the winner of the "BCS championship" game as the (coaches) national champ".

wds4usc said...

The point is Steve, you are sounding like a neo-con propagandist attempting to re-write history. If you believe LSU DESERVED the entire title, that's a nice argument for a barroom but that's different than denying the facts of the situation at hand. I believe that Georgia Tech should have been awarded both halves of the title instead of sharing with Colorado in 1990 and I'm sure that some Washington fans are upset with BYU for 1984. However, that is an argument of relative merit and not of the final tally. So argue all you want as to who is deverving but you are right--the record (and reality) stands.

Anonymous said...

The fact is, wds, each of your examples occurred pre-BCS. Since 1998 there has been one championship game per year. In 2003 LSU played in - and won - said championship game. It's as simple as that.

wds4usc said...

Here we go again. LSU won the BCS game. The AP awarded their title AFTER all the bowl games. It's as simple as that!!! The AP still counts and there is absolutely NOTHING showing otherwise including any complaints from the
BCS or coaches. LSU won the BCS game and USC won the AP. Period. End of story. Please don't re-write history or distort the facts.

wds4usc said...

Yost, anyone....PLEASE!!! I'm getting exhausted! They can't/won't let it go. If the gods of the BCA and Coaches' Association and every D-1 AD all spoke out they STILL wouldn't accept it!!! Maybe we'll just agree that LSU won every AP, UPI, Dickenson, and BCS title from the beginning of time. OK? How's that?

Yost said...

LOL, WDS.

Anonymous said...

wds, please enlighten us as to how Steve's statement is in any way "distorted":

Since 1998 there has been one championship game per year. In 2003 LSU played in - and won - said championship game.

wds4usc said...

There is NO NCAA championship game. There is a BCS championship game which LSU won. The AP then voted and selected their champion AFTER the bowls. Thus TWO champions-Coaches (BCS) and Writers (AP). The AP was never de-certified and has its own rules for selection of a champion REGARDLESS of any bowl game or result. It is a separate entity and is recognized by the universities and coaches and anyone else involved with college football. It is NOT bound by the BCS championship game winner as are the coaches. It was never excluded as a championship selector nor was there any movement to do so at ANY time. Simple, eh???

wds4usc said...

You know I promised to be nice to the majority of LSU fans but they need to police their own a bit and stop this nonsense. Like I said, I'll even buy the beer....

Anonymous said...

Every Tiger fan I know is 100% behind the onepeat campaign. Hell, every person I know is 100% behind the campaign.

Nonsense is the University of Spoiled Children trying to claim the AP is equal to the BCS title after their team didn't earn a spot in the NC game. Nonsense is USC's official sports website stating that the Trojans were hoping to make it to the Sugar Bowl game to "play for the national championship"... and then a week later spinning the story because things didn't work out for them.

GEAUX TIGERS!

FUSC.

Yost said...

LOL!

You must not know a lot of people, Anon.

Anonymous said...

This thread needs to be ended. Yes, I'm a tiger fan and I know many Tiger fans. Out of all those, I know 2 who agree with the campaign although neither gave money and the rest of us are apathetic to it or embarrassed by it. Nuff said. Thanks MZone.

Seacrest out.

Anonymous said...

anon 6:32, not a Tiger fan though I think the onepeat idea was brilliant...

I've got to call you out re your post. You clearly are not a Tiger fan. A Tiger fan would not use the word "apathetic". LOL

wds4usc said...

You see how when the LSU "fans" get flustered they resort to attacking everything in sight? By the way, "Steve" has been called out on numerous occasions to contact the BCS, NCAA and the various athletic directors for their take. He's never responded. Gee, I wonder why...???If he wants to prove his case, he should go to the source but I think he knows better.

Shouldn't Miami fans be chasing around (literally) have naked Cuban chicas on South Beach rather than drumming up some garbage from several years ago?

They just can't handle losing very well. I was at the Alabama-Florida basketball in Gainesville last year (where Alabama got crushed) and was sitting next to some Miami fan who informed me Alabama got "lucky" in '92! Get over it already.

wds4usc said...

If LSU played Miami(Fla) would each deny the other's existence after the game?

Anonymous said...

wds, will USC make a January bowl game this year? LOL. You are a tool.

wds4usc said...

A tool? How original. Whether USC makes a Jan. bowl or not is not how we measure ourselves as humans. It's a great thing to support your school but when you become a jerk about it you've lost all perspective. Get a life.

Anon 7:41, I am indeed a Tiger Fan. My father played his freshman year at LSU in the late 60's before tearing his ACL, ending his career. I'm originally from Shreveport and most recently moved to Monroe for job purposes. Believe it or not, we inbred redneck uneducated folk can use "big" words like apathetic. We really don't understand what it means though. I hope you noted my heavy sarcasm here.

To my LSU friends: An update on John David Booty--It has been reported that he has been suffering from back spasms. It is unknown how long he'll be out but apparently he had an epidural. They will re-evaluate but, gulp, surgery has been mentioned. Obviously, this is a big setback for John David and we are hoping for the best.

Just makes the true fans of these schools look ridiculous. The creepy guy that started the onepeat billboard thing is clearly an obsessed rube with little to do in life but whine about something he'll never change. And while LSU has a legitimate claim to the BCS title that year, without an NCAA sanction on college football, USC has just as much a claim to their share of the split. tOSU on the other hand? NC without an argument.
