SB XL 2/5/06

For those of you who only enjoy the college game and don't pay much attention to the NFL - Yost, I'm looking at you - there's a big game this Sunday. It's called the Super Bowl, and despite what pop culture will tell you, it's true purpose is to determine the champion of the professional football world.

This year's game pits the Steelers of Pittsburgh against the Seattle Seahawks. As a service to our M Zone readers, well, actually just the Michigan fans among our readers, we will advise you on who to root for - assuming you have no allegiance to or money on either team.

Cheer for Pittsburgh. Is it because of the beaten to death story of Jerome Bettis returning to Detroit? Yeah, right, he's a Domer. Nope it's because the Steelers have two former Wolverines on their roster (LB Larry Foote and TE Jerame Tuman) and the Seahawks only have one (OL Steve Hutchinson). This system has also picked the winner three of the previous four Super Bowls, though that was just because we were aligned with Tom Brady. I figure it'll be an easy choice next year, too, when John Navarre leads Arizona to the big game.

I want to point out that Tuman and Foote are both first-rate assholes, and Hutch is a very nice guy.

Go Hawks.

I’m not a big fan of the NFL, either. If college football is my heroin addiction, the NFL playoffs and Super Bowl are the methadone I use to gradually bring me down after the college bowl season ends.

Other factors to consider:

The Steelers don’t have cheerleaders, the Seahawks do.

Western Pennsylvania is like a less swampy, more hilly version of Michigan with its rusting, abandoned factories and good deer hunting.

Seattle is largely responsible for Americans finally getting access to decent coffee.

A Starbucks on every corner, the overpricing, and the absurd sizes are completely overdoing the whole coffee thing.

Steve Hutchinson is what every Michigan offensive lineman should ache to become, cloned him now. Please!

You all do know Jerome Bettis is from Detroit, don’t you? This story just isn’t getting the coverage it deserves.

Also Grant Bowman is on the Pittsburgh practice squad for the game while Jeremy LeSeuer and Alain Kashama are on the practice squad for the Seahawks.

I forgot to mention, the Steelers also have the Terrible Towel, which could be seen as an oblique reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and “the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.”

Any man who can man who can go on the road for the all the playoff games and make it to Detroit and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.
