Folks, we're truly amazed. After the Auburn mascot post we put up last month was discovered by 'Bama and Auburn fans, they have been waging a viscious cyberspace version of the Iron Bowl/Civil War in a corner of M Zone cyberspace here.
At last count, we have something like 150 comments on this post alone which is more impressive when you stop to consider that this isn't even a 'Bama or Auburn site!

This is completely off the topic of college football, but the photo sure is appropriate considering the volume of the comments and the region of the country they’re coming from.
I don’t know if this is a coincidence or not, but that particular photo shows “Federal soldiers, killed on July 1, near the McPherson woods.” Due to the area of the battlefield and the date of the action there, these soldiers are frequently assumed to have belonged to the Union “Iron Brigade” and some past Civil War authors have gone so far as identifying these soldier’s regiment, the 24th Regiment, Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
The M Zone -- Not just football and semi-naked cheerleaders.
I have been amazed at the (generally good natured) intensity of the exchanges between Alabama and Auburn fans on this blog over the past few days. I'd love to attend one of their games some day.
The tone of the rivalry does seem similar to that of M-Sparty, though Auburn (like Sparty the "little brother" with agricultual roots) has actually been a consistent power, while Sparty has never sustained anything more than being among the solidly mediocre of the second-rate teams in college football.
Yost, the photo you chose was a good one, particularly after reading Baggy's background info. about it. From witnessing the passion of southern football fans on this blog, I can't believe the North won the Civil War. Don't get me wrong...I'm glad we did. Though I have to admit "Dixie" is a way better song than anything us Yankees have ever come up with. Hear that tune once and it will be in your head for days.

I've always thought "Garry Owen" was an excellent tune. Although not adopted as the official tune of the 7th US Cavalry until 1867, it was popular among Civil War regiments with large numbers of Irish soldiers. And, it's about drinking!
