If You Can Stomach It

Here is a link to view that final almost-miracle play again.

Ecker, why? Why, why, why?!

Ecker's brain has no heart.

Or, his heart has no brain. Yes, that's it.

Tyler was Academic All-Big Ten. His smarts must have left him by the end of the game.

My God, you're right, DB. He had the same brain freeze against tOSU on the last play when he decided to get two more yards instead of going out of bounds for one shot at a miracle play there, too.

As perplexed and frustrated as I am at this play, I don't want to get too down on the kid. Remember that he also caught the game-clinching pass in the 2003 OSU game, and the game-winner in 2004 Minnesota.

My guess on this play was that after running 50 yards, Ecker was so exhausted (remember, this was at the very end of the game, too) that he just blanked out when he got hit.

Here's the thing, though.

When Ecker first gets the ball and cuts to the outside, you can pause it at the moment that he looks directly at Steve Breaston, who at that moment is behind him and waving his arms frantically. It's very clear. So you can't tell me that Ecker blanked, or got caught up in the moment, or really anything.

When he starts down the sideline, I know he might have gotten excited, and again, may have lost his mind a bit. But is there anyone out there who thinks for a second that during that entire 60 yard run Steve Breaston wasn't screaming at the top of his lungs...

"TYLER! GIVE ME THE FUCKING BALL! IT'S ME! STEVE! STEVE BREASTON! ROSE BOWL ALL-PURPOSE YARDS RECORD HOLDER! I'M RIGHT BEHIND YOU! TYLER!"

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Loef, that is the funniest thing you've ever written here. I almost spit up my drink reading it this morning.
