I thought I had mistakenly clicked on the link to the NATIONAL ENQUIRER when I read the stat. I would have been less surprsed if the first paragraph said "Bigfoot spotted in A2" (and was not referring to any residents of Stockwell). But...

Rumor (and the Detroit News) has it that Michigan claims the Big 10's second-best pass defense. Can that possibly be right? Who's keeping tabs of the stats this season, Katherine Harris and the Florida Election Commission?

That's right, it's was Katherine Harris and the Florida Election Commission keeping the stats, but it doesn't matter, because the Florida Supreme Court declared everyone was playing baseball all along.

These stats are based on total yards. It's a very inefficent way of measuring how strong a defense (or an offense) is. The most important things aren't necessarily yards. It's 3rd down conversion rate, turnovers and red zone efficiency. Other than turnovers, we haven't been that strong in these categories on offense or defense. Hence the 5-3 record.
Troy Aikman, who's the only NFL analyst I don't mute, has come up with the Aikman Efficiency Ratings. The formula is explained at the bottom of this link, http://www.nfl.com/news/story/8043614. I haven't done the math - I'm not very good with numbers - but I'm sure we'd be near the bottom on both offense and defense.
